My silliest pet peeve is that every set of the Narnia books are put in chronological order nowadays. When I am very passionate in my belief that LWW is what is supposed to introduce us to the world of Narnia. Not Magician's Nephew. We get introduced to the world alongside the Pevensies, and then learn it's origins later on

imagine you have spent months watching your son and his cousins at each other's throats unable to have a polite conversation with each other to the point that your nephew genuinely has to remove himself from the room to prevent a physical altercation and you have to listen to your son complain about his cousins daily

and then just one day coming home for dinner and suddenly your son is holding onto your nephew's shirt sleeve like it's a life preserver your son and your niece are sitting together in an armchair reading a book your son and his cousins are piled together in bed whispering in a language you don't understand

and your brother and his wife and your other niece and nephew come to visit and you expect your oldest nephew to immediately poke fun at your son and your oldest niece to focus on her sister but then suddenly they're being pulled to sit as close as possible to your son and their siblings and now all five of them are talking in the strange language and your son is looking at his older cousins with wide eyes like he's looking at the king of england himself and you have to just look at your brother and his wife and they look as lost as you

Nearly all of the oldest Narnian songs bear a resemblance to old English hymns.

Frank & Helen sang often, and the hymns they loved were adapted to Aslan & Narnia. The lyrics may have been lost to time, and stylistically the music found its own distinctly Narnian sound, but some remnants of the melodies remained.

Edmund appreciation post with some of my favorite moments from Prince Caspian and Voyage of the Dawn Treader

Edmund is the one who figures out the whole "Narnia runs on a different time" thing

he's a rock climber!! it's never explained how and why he's into rock climbing but I appreciate that the Narrator lets us know this

it's so funny how he gets riled up when Trumpkin insinuates that they're "no good" and Peter has to calm him down

"Edmund bit his lips till the blood came, as the sword flashed down on Peter."

He's actually really mean to Eustace at the start of VDT. it's so funny because Lucy is constantly trying to be nice while Edmund is openly rude towards Eustace

even so, it's telling that the first person Eustace talks to after his un-dragoning is Edmund. it's such a quiet, understated scene, and definitely one of my favorite moments in this book. for the first time, Eustace is vulnerable about his feelings, and Edmund simply listens to him with patience and understanding

Edmund is also the first to figure out that water turns things into gold in Deathwater

"She ran down the stairs which she had come up so nervously that morning and cannoned into Edmund at the bottom." okay this might be more of a Lucy moment, but it still has Edmund in it, so!! I always imagine this as Lucy crashing straight into Edmund and giving him a big hug. knowing how worried Edmund was for Peter during the duel in Prince Caspian, he was probably going insane while waiting for her

Kind of interesting that out of the two Pevensies, Edmund is the one to repeatedly tell Caspian that he can't abdicate. Lucy is silent until she brings up Ramandu's daughter, but otherwise it's Edmund who argues with him.

Generally, while Edmund is not that outspoken in VDT, I appreciate that it makes the moments when he does speak out very impactful

I was always confused as to why Edmund says in the Prince Caspian movie, "So you're bravely refusing to fight a swordsman half your age," when Miraz was probably three or four times Peter's age. But then I remembered: Edmund saw Peter live up to his twenties in the Golden Age. If Miraz was at the very least forty-years-old, then chronologically, Edmund's statement makes sense.

Additionally, by the time of the Telmarine Age, everyone and I mean everyone, would know of the Kings and Queens of the Golden Age. They knew they would be in their twenties when they disappeared, but when they returned as preteens/teenagers, of course the Telmarines would underestimate them and forget they are actually much older. Miraz and his men were thinking they were having a war with literal children. But Edmund's sassy statement would've brought Miraz back to reality. Miraz choked up because he remembered who he was really up against. Edmund's words reminded Miraz not to underestimate him and his siblings. "We're actually much older than we look, so if you think you can get away with this, you won't," is basically what Edmund said lol

This also shows how very intelligent and word-savvy Edmund is. No wonder he's the diplomat. No wonder they chose him to deliver the challenge to Miraz.

(Or maybe Edmund just forgot him and his siblings were back in their preteen/teenage bodies, which was why he referred to Peter as only half the age of Miraz. But either way, he clocked Miraz HARD lol)

Right so anyway that scene in Narnia: The Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe where the ice breaks and Peter tells his sisters to hold onto him while he holds the sword- the sword he held up as a weapon moments before- and then he's the only one holding onto it as they go down the river and they're both holding onto him and he has one hand on the sword and one hand on Lucy, with Susan holding onto him. He is the only one who is safe- holding the sword- and the girls- not holding the sword- are holding onto him. The thing is Peter doesn't want to be holding the sword, he wants to be holding his sisters but in order to keep them afloat he has to hold the sword. When Lucy starts slipping he lets go of the sword to help her but has to turn away to grab the sword again because if he lets go of the sword for a moment they all slip away. He cannot protect his family unless he is holding onto the sword. So when they finally make it ashore, the horror when Lucy isn't with them, and that Peter let go of her- but what kind of choice was that because he is put in a situation where all he could do was hold the sword while still being the only thing his sisters had to keep them safe. To keep his family safe all he can do is hold a sword, but when they are swept away he will still think he didn't do enough-
