Overall, this class taught me a lot. Not only about art and the different techniques I learned, but also about myself. I was able to learn from other amazing artists around me and use their different views to improve my own works of art.

The one assignment I was actually afraid of was the one of the child and bird. I thought I was going to really mess it up, but I just trusted the process and did what I felt was needed to convey the same amount of obscurity that the photo had when it was first released. This piece turned out to be my favorite one! I renamed it to "Aviation".

I really enjoyed this class. Everyone was great, the food was good, and our overindulgence of the Gamisol was hilarious. 10/10.

Thank you Professor for the incredible lessons, and I wish you all, my classmates, the best on your journey becoming artists!

Reflection:

This semester was an all around challenge for me as a painter. Not only did it challenge my paintings and techniques, but also my thought process. I want to be successful in my painting career and these exercises have definitely helped. Thank you again!

Looking at my final projects I am extremely proud of myself. As much as I want what I love to be easy, I am learning to appreciate the process. These definitely took a lot work than I expected but I see why. The color of white was one of my favorite projects because I was forced to work on two new techniques. The first was to push the tone boundaries using invention which is something I never thought of doing. The second was to work with broken color which I have always wanted to do and didnt expect it to be as satisfying as it was. I also really love the outcome of my word painting. The glazing created a beautiful light effect and I know if I keep working with this technique I can only improve. I am still working on small corrections and finishing my last painting/object project but I am really happy about this semester and admire my progress.

PAINTING AS AN OBJECT:

This was a very challenging lesson I would say. In the beginning my partner and I had many conceptual ideas that followed a perfect tract (in our minds). After much deligation with the class, we were able to take a step back. I have found that there is more beauty in not knowing the exactness of something. I think I definitely let some internalized aspects of myself spill into my work. And while on one hand it allows me to really connect with my painting, it doesn’t often allow for real world relation. I am a people person and so, to some degree, it is important that other people can find solice and self exploration in my work. All in all, I really enjoyed the learning experience and working with my partner wss a breeze.

I am pleased with where my cool/warm painting is going. Initially, it was very frustrating for me. I found that the picture was extremely tedious to draw and I was unsure of what I wanted the colors to be. But, I knew I wanted my painting to be political. For starters, the skin of the Jesus figurine will be a darker brown. This is because so often, Jesus is depicted as white due to colonialism which is false because of where he was born according to the Bible. In addition, the background is a green color because it represents money in this capitalist America we live in. And so often, there is not a separation of church and state like there should be. I want the picture to depict the greed, anger, and violence of such a holy figure. While Jesus is supposed to represent a loving story, people have abused their power to make it a means of oppression. I want to continue to give the painting a terrifying atmosphere as the reality of life if terrifying. And the fact that his story is one of death for all of humanity, but was humanity worth saving (I know, dark)?

Our next project is painting as an object. My partner and I have thought up som ideas and I am very excited. Below are some notes from today’s class.

Now that we are getting more into the painting I am able to see the transition of the glazing. It really does make a denser to start with an initial color and keep applying color. It does take a lot of patience but I am loving the progress. Since the summer I have been on a mission to work better with light source and give the effect of warmth. I am happy with my painting so far but I know I have a way to go.

Our trip today was amazing. At first I did not know what to expect from visiting the New York Library because I have never been. When I arrived at the building it seemed like something out of the Christmas movie: Louise or Annie. Although it was a pretty monotone appearance, the structure just felt important. When we entered it was extremely beautiful. The ceilings were high and bronze with bright chandeliers hanging from their center. All of the statues and banisters were laced with Christmas reefs and it felt very tranquil.

When we entered the Picture Collection (room 100) there were rows of folders. The library supervisor explained that the collection head 12,000 subject heads and over half a million photos! These subjects ranged from “performance art” to “abandoned buildings”. I was so excited to get into the folders and see what has been preserved. For my “found” image project (a found image is an image of an image already documented) I wanted to do a college that is true to my culture and my goals. To be spontaneous I look through the folders labeled “water”, “religious art”, and “fairies”. I was not disappointed.

Although each folder contained a variety of pictures that seemed mostly distant in relation, I created stories. And that is what I want my collage to be. I want readers to understand more about who I am through the art. I cannot wait to go to the library again, I literally could spend all day looking through art history.

In class, we began by discussing several different questions; What constitutes an object/What are its qualities?, What constitutes a painting/What are its qualities?, and When is painting not a painting?

My partner and I said that an object is anything that is tangible and that a painting is any art work created with paint (tools) or painted on (support). And as art is what the creator claims it to be, a painting could not be a painting when the artist says so. I have also posted answers from classmates. Additionally, we talked about found objects in our everyday lives. Whether it be on billboards or advertisements we are constantly absorbing images.

The artist I researched was Becky Suss and it was partially because her name sounds really cool. But her artwork did not disappoint! I found that her artwork was of everyday rooms, but she does not try to make it look truly realistic there is still are cartoon feel to the painting

In 1980, Suss was born in Philadelphia where she still resides. She met with a write Kate Krazcon and explained examining “space, nostalgia, class, and the transporting nature of art and decorative objects” through this simultaneous existence of documentary and art. Which was just beautiful.

For this lesson’s word art painting, I am visually satisfied and, in the same vain, stressed. At first, it was extremely difficult accomplishing a high tone color for the background. I kept forgetting that acrylic dries a shade darker and it was difficult to spread it all around the canvas. In addition, as a member of the left-hand community I have accepted that straight lines are my sworn enemy. EVEN WITH MASKING TAPE. But, I was very surprised to see the outcome of my work so far. It helps that I am using acrylic as the undertone so that I am able to go over my mistakes. Overall, I am interested to see the finished product and how I will accomplish the next steps. I have never worked with glazing because it looks very intricate and intimidating. I am excited to learn something new in a classroom setting so that I can be guided and less frantic.

The artist that my group and I worked with was specifically John Beldassari. John Beldassari had an interesting art journey (as I have reposted), but I really appreciate the most recent work. His text work contradicts that expectations of beauty that has been placed on “art” and society in general. He simply paints words and allows a moment of free association to to his audience. For example, in his “pure beauty” painting, I was challenged to understand what “pure beauty” is in art and the real world. I was faced with the questions; What constitutes pure? What constitutes beauty? Do I also have my own bias/stereotypes? This artist was very thought provoking and so my group was extremely intrigued.

Our piece, “GUNK”, took this inspiration and put a spin on it. We made the display itself very simple in order to create a thinking atmosphere. In addition, the word took a good amount of space to exaggerate the filth the is captured in the word. We also used a textured medium to make the words appear gooey, sticky, or filled with garbage. I really enjoyed this exercise and I cannot wait for my finished individual word art.

Wayne White is an American artist, art director, illustrator, puppeteer, and much, much more. Born and raised in Chattanooga. In 1986, Wayne became a designer for the hit television show Pee-wee's Playhouse, and his work was awarded with three Emmys. His most successful works have been the world paintings featuring oversized, three-dimensional text painstakingly integrated into vintage landscape reproductions. The message of the paintings is often thought-provoking and almost always humorous, with Wayne pointing a finger at vanity, ego, and his memories of the South. Wayne has been traveling the country delivering an incredibly entertaining hour long talk where he discusses his life and work, while making time for a little banjo and harmonica playing.

Bruce Nauman

His expanded notion of sculpture admits wax casts and neon signs, bodily contortions and immersive video environment"

You can notice that his art is very pop art-ish, but in an unconventional way. I always LOVED neon, so this artist is very interesting.

Josh Smith

Josh Smith is a New York artist who does very expressive and abstract paintings, as well as collage and sculpture. He became well known as a result of his series of paintings that depicted his name painted in a abstract form. He mentions that his ontent in his work is to "The message is indefinable, but the gist of it is; we are alive and here together....Here is a group of painted poems if you like...take a look and absorb what you want from them"

Jon Campbell is an Australian artist who has become a significant figure in Australian Pop Art. He makes contemporary word paintings with bright colors and intentionally makes the letters large and illegible. His letters are primarily geometric and he uses the technique of color blocking create contrast. Different spaces have unique colors to make them stand out

Mel Bochner

is an American conceptual artist. Bochner has devoted much of his career to exploring the medium of words. Not to say Bochner is a writer, exactly. Rather, he engages in something like an abstract aesthetic version of semiotics. Semiotics is the study of symbols; how they are used, what they communicate, and the various ways they might be interpreted. Bochner creates aesthetic phenomena that use symbolic elements such as words in ways unrelated to their usual context. By appropriating common symbols and presenting them as abstractions, Bochner allows viewers the opportunity to interpret these symbols and their context in new ways.

Agatha Gothe-snape is an Australian artist born in 1980. Some of her more famous works include POWERPOINTS, a lifelong series that she continually works on. With these pieces, she draws influence from concrete poetry, color field painting, and the emergence of the internet. Gothe-snape often explores emotional and historical responses to the reception of art and has exhibited in some major international biennales.

For part 1 of our painting exercise, we researched some artists who use text in their work. In regards to the perimeters of the assignment, our paintings should reflect on mood and how the text is played into the context, materials, process, effect and intent.

A great artist to look at is Glenn Ligon, who says “it’s not about me, it’s about we.”

He was born in the Bronx, and is still living and working in NY. His paintings draw of writings and speeches of many diverse figures. Essentially he reveals the ways in which slavery, the civil rights movement, and sexual politics inform our understanding of American society.

Some of his techniques include silkscreening, neon and photography. He layers text in an abstract way we’re it becomes difficult to read but exemplifies the context of layering meaning.
