Warm & Cool Tones - Final Images with Closeup Shots
The Color of White - Final Image
Glazing Project - Final Images with closeup shot.
Glad I got a picture of this one when I first finished it last week because someone moved it and liked other work on it and it got ruined :( Ended up having dark blue paint on it in different spots.
Final Project of our last project which was a collaboration. Mine was with Patrick and I have to say it was one of my favorites of the semester.
~ EXPLORING PERCEPTIONS OF COLOUR.
As a class, we learned how the warm and cool of each colour behaved. We created first a colour chart spit up into groups where we painted a grid mixing a warm and cool of each of the primary colours with each other at a 50/50 ratio which gave us the colours as seen above.
After this exercise we split up into groups of three and carroed out the following exercises to see how colours interect with one another altering our perspectives of them:
~
HUE AS VALUE.
For this assignment, we randomly selected a range of colours from the pile of Color-Aid, and arranged them in order of lightest to darkest value by using just our eyes. I worked in a group with Patrick and Danielle for this, and we were very successful as the colour range shown above was what we accomplished on our first attempt. In order to see if our values were accurate, we lined up the colours, and took a photograph of the final result and decreased the colour saturation all the way to see if they were in ascending order.
~
BOUNDARIES.
Where one colour meets another colour the two edges create a line. The line is referred to as a boundary line. The line will be soft or hard according to values, so we arranged the colours here to match the hardness of the line of our top two colour pairings. As some of the colouts were of a similar value, what you see above is our final results which took a couple of attempts to acheive since we wanted to be satisfied that we had paired the best two colours together.
~
THREE COLOURS AS FOUR.
We decided we were going to go monochromatic with this exercise, so selected to use a black, white, and medium grey. The aim of of the exercise was to place the mid-valie colour against two contrasting shades in an attempt to make it look like two different colours. As you can see by the end result, the grey against the black looks significantly lighter than the grey against the white.
~
HOW MUCH TO HOW MUCH.
The final colour experiement we did in this class was created by first concocting thw ugliest colour combination we could think of, and then creating two paintings with 1/ an equal ratio of the colours on the paper, and 2/ a highly disproportionate ratio of the two shades. The end result gave us a better insight into how the proportion of colour used in a work of art not only impacts how we see the artwork, but also how our eyes assess colour.
~ FIELD TRIP.
As a class, we took a field tip into NYC to see the work of several painters and artists, the first of which was an Amy Sherlad exhibition. I want to keep my analysis of the artworks I saw on this trip to a minimum, as all the artists’ works were very unique and different, however, one commonality amongst them all was their exploration and use of colour.
Amy Sherald for example contrasted monochromatic skintones with bright and vibrant fabrics. Although on a closer look at her paintings, we can see that the monochrome skin shades are made up of a wide array of colours such as greens, yellows, and blues, all changing depending on the overall theme of the painting.
We also stopped by several other galleries throughout the day, however, I unfortunately did not manage to get the names of all the artists, however, as you can see in the work shown below, the techniques and applications by which these artists have all used colour and paint accomlish imcrdible results, from painting, to sculpture:

Progress shots today from our painting as an object piece. Pat and I were originally indecisive on what to do, thinking about just weaving pieces of our leftover canvas paper into something. However, as we started picking up fabrics and exploring old artworks, we became more experimental. We tore off an old painting from these stretcher bars and proceeded to place our canvas paper on the top half of said bars. We originally wanted to drop paint, but decided to make some marks instead. I placed the red mark first, and then Pat did the yellow and blue, interpreting and experimenting based off of the first mark. We knew we wanted to incorporate the fabric we grabbed somehow, but we weren’t sure if we wanted it in front of, or behind, the canvas. Once we finished our marks, we realized that we kind of wanted to paint the stretcher bars as well, but using a masking technique to leave some areas still bare.
Once we had all of that, we hung it on the wall and started rearranging the fabric in different ways to see what was working but quickly realized it was missing *something*. We stepped back and remembered that we originally discussed adding canvas paper to the back and painting a yellow line across. Instead of doing this, we decided to cut pieces of canvas paper and simply lay them across the backside of the canvas, stapling them to be secure. We went back and forth on whether or not we should paint these strips but ultimately decided it looked and felt better without it. After the paint dried, we reinterpreted how we could lay the fabric over the front — leading to the final two shots on here (one full and one detail) and our final piece.
Warm & Cool Colour Painting Progress + Class Discussion
Class Discussion:
During our class discussion, we learned about what constitutes a painting, when a painting is not a painting, and how images find us. We learned that a painting is any artwork created with something you can paint with or paint on. Examples of what we can paint with or paint on can be seen in the first image posted above. For when a painting is not a painting, we said that this is when something doesn’t exist or even when an artist says so. For how images find us, we choose some of the following examples including the internet, social media, billboards, magazines, TV, photos, street art, ads, etc. By discussing some of these questions, we get to have a sense of how found images influence our day to day lives.
Warm & Cool Colour Progress:
During the last class session, we started to plan out our warm & cool colour paintings. For my painting in particular, I choose the following found image of a close up of a chicken:
For my painting, I plan on making it super colorful, creative, and unique. I will insert a picture of my painting progress below. I can’t wait to see how my painting turns out when it’s finished.
When an artist uses found image, what does it mean?
- It means that it is an image that was not originally theirs but they find a way to incorporate it into their own work.
What are some ways in which we might find an image? What are the limitations of these ways?
- We May find our images walking down the streets and seeing the wall art, graffiti or murials. And the limitations here is that they may not be as accurate as the actual inspiration to what made these artists create street art.
How are images transmitted to us? How might they affect us?
- Images are transmitted to us through social platforms. Such as tumblr itself gives us a way to see images without actually looking for them. They affect us because that’s how we introduce ourselves to arts of not just paintings but pictures or photography in general.
What are the qualities of certain images?
- The qualities of certain image types is basically what they correspond to us. If it’s a personal photograph well then it takes us back to when that first memory occurred.
Trip To NY - 11/20/19
We went to the MOMA and NY Public Library on Wednesday the 20th.Â
I started my trip by meeting up with my group. It took us an extra 15 minutes to catch up to the main class because of multiple hilarious hiccups along the way, but that’s what made the day great. Great times shared with great people.
Finally reaching the NY Public Library, I was able to find a few interesting pictures for my next painting. However, one stuck out to me the most:
This photo is actually the cover for a film called Rescued From An Eagles Nest. This was considered one of the oddest scenes in cinema for a very long time. The image has a gothic vibe. It’s very unsettling. The composition is also very interesting. You have this natural landscape in the background with these two dominating bodies in the center of the frame. They both share equal space, and both represent opposite sides of the spectrum.Â
The child is small, pure, yet the eagle is huge, pitch black, and menacing. Â
I knew the second I took a look at that photo, it was the one I had to paint.Â
After the NY Public Library, we went to the MOMA. I took a few photos of some interesting pieces that caught my eye.Â
This pole especially, was a favorite. This definitely looks like something I plan to install into my own apartment.Â
Overall, I loved the art, but also the dynamic of our group. We were all able to separate, enjoy the art on our own, and then regroup to talk about individual pieces we enjoyed. I really enjoyed the trip, and I’m actually upset that it was our last one. It’s always fun to be a creator, and go look at things other people create with other people that also create. It’s freakin’ meta.Â
I had an awesome time!

Honestly, this is my favorite project that we’ve done for the entire semester. I’m loving the technique and I’m really enjoying glazing.
