At the print studio this morning! I printed my contribution to the yearly notecard pack at Phoenix Rising Printmaking... learned how to set-up and run (and clean) the Vandercook Typepress, as well as print some cards!

Professional Contexts 1

Koichi Yamamoto is a monotype artist whos work combines traditional and contemporary techniques.  His designs explore issues of the sublime, memory, and atmosphere. He implements these ideas through simple, abstract designs contrasting tonal dark colour schemes for each piece. The faded approach reflects the atmospheric ideas and the contrast of dark tones with bright whiteness shows ideas of light, mirror reflections, glass formation and water splashes. The muted colour tone effects combined with the shape formations in these mono prints make the overall design very desirable and emotive. They include very minimal content but the illustrative approach communicates a bold message.  

Each mono print is unique, many of which are originally made by engraving into copper, inking into the design and creating the mono print from this. Engraving is historically a traditional print making process which has become less common as more simple,easier and quicker processes for mono printing are now used. I am going to experiment with abstract, atmospheric and emotive ideas for mono printing for myself similar to Koichi’s style.
