Got to see a legend speak. yesterday. Harvey Massey bought Walker Chemical in 1985, a company with $4M in revenue. A few years later, he would change the name to Massey Services, and would build it into the fifth largest pest control company in the United States, earning $250M of revenue today. He did it through treating his people well, profitable pricing strategies, excellent branding, and putting the customer above all else. Treating people well: Mr. Massey invested in constant training for his people, and pays 81% of the healthcare premiums for his employees. By investing in them, and helping them with their health, he shows he cares. I also believe you have to pay better than market pay. Additionally, something I try to do is to respect my team’s time with family. The healthcare part I fall short on, which eats at me and I’m working on it. Several of his people in the room had been with him for 20 or more years, a testament to his culture. Profitable pricing strategies: he set rate cards to standardize his pricing, and raised unprofitable account prices or canceled them. One of his favorite quotes he shared: “you can never make a profit too soon”. He committed to creating a strong brand. In his words, “if you don’t get the look right, you will never get the act right”. He also said, “People by nature will believe a thousand fold more what they see as opposed to what you say”. In other words, your branding matters! The look of your company matters! The shave, uniform, haircut, and clean vehicle matters. At Dave’s, we have positioned our company values with the first three values composing a trinity of sorts where the customer, employee, and company profit all have to be highly balanced for our company to be successful.
