it can be really hard to convince yourself that you deserve love sometimes, whether it’s because of something someone said or did, or because no matter how much others tell you, your brain won’t let you think anything other than hatefulness towards yourself…. because you can always see your flaws better than others can. you wake up to them every day, you see them in the mirror and you hear them in your voice and you feel them in your chest so at some point fixable flaws turn into permanent incurable blemishes, like every time you see them they just get more intense. 

however, being able to see these things doesn’t make you any less deserving of love. 

it’s like when you stare at a piece of art you’ve been working on for a long time, and you haven’t moved and your hand is cramping and you have a headache but you need to keep working because something is missing and suddenly everything is ruined because you can’t find that certain something to make all the flaws disappear. instead of being proud of producing such a beautiful piece of art- something genuinely one of a kind that can never be recreated in exactly the same way- you feel resentful and disgusted. 

then others come and tell you that they like it, they admire your work even when you try to tell them that it didn’t actually take that long, when the hunch in your back and the bags under your eyes says otherwise. then you can step away from it and look at it from different angles and under different lighting. it’s not easy to find the good things at first, because it’s yours and because its you, but you’ll find the angles and the lighting and the right way to look at everything you thought was a mistake that really just made it that much more beautiful of a piece. 

there’s a lot of hard work that goes into loving a piece of art, and it takes a lot of time. it’s okay if you haven’t made it there yet, or if you make it there and notice another flaw and have to start the process over again. there will always be different angles, different lighting, different hands to pat you on the back and remind you that it’s okay to dislike these things because its not finished yet. 

give yourself the same time and love you’d give a piece of artwork that you’ve worked on for so long it’d be a shame to quit. you are not a worn out, torn up canvas, and you can always keep painting.
