Edward Tufte’s Envisioning Information
Week: 4-5
For this week we had to read Chapters in Edward Tufte’s Envisioning Information. So informative.. obviously but the chapters that I presented on discussed the idea of Micro/Macro visualization and the use of color. For Micro/Macro it uses both constructs to give users parsed information. The macro view gives a big picture view where you can see patterns that would often be missed if you only viewed the data at a micro level where the micro level is more intimate experience and offers many layers of hierarchical information...

Detroit MI + Ames IA Collaborates
Weeks 2-4: CCS teams up with Iowa State University. Professor Matt Raupp and former Alum and ISU Professor Alex Braidwood paired their students together to create 3 data portraits about each others fair city. I was teamed up with another CCS student and we had two partners in Ames, Iowa. It was an amazing project both quick and informative.
We talked for a total of 5 hours via Google Hangout before tasking each other with various data sets that we wanted the other team to collect. I asked our Ames counterparts to survey 50 people which I designed and to take their portrait.
There is a stereotype that Ames is “polite” that I wanted to explore along with the juxtaposed life. What is their day like? What are some of their expressions? Beyond being a midwestern state what is the difference. We ran a lot of parallels when discussing Michigan vs Iowa but one thing caught my attention when they said that they have 3 times more pigs that people! What!
So next are some images that represent the process.

Week 1: research the difference between print and web and also discuss the difference between an information designer and graphic designer. Look into work by Terry Irwin, Gerlinde Schuller, and David McCandless. Research pie charts and waterfall graphs. What make them work, what are they used for, what are limitations.
