Detroit MI + Ames IA Collaborates

Weeks 2-4: CCS teams up with Iowa State University. Professor Matt Raupp and former Alum and ISU Professor Alex Braidwood paired their students together to create 3 data portraits about each others fair city. I was teamed up with another CCS student and we had two partners in Ames, Iowa. It was an amazing project both quick and informative. 

We talked for a total of 5 hours via Google Hangout before tasking each other with various data sets that we wanted the other team to collect. I asked our Ames counterparts to survey 50 people which I designed and to take their portrait. 

There is a stereotype that Ames is “polite” that I wanted to explore along with the juxtaposed life. What is their day like? What are some of their expressions? Beyond being a midwestern state what is the difference. We ran a lot of parallels when discussing Michigan vs Iowa but one thing caught my attention when they said that they have 3 times more pigs that people! What!

Strangers can define you based on physical features. People who know you can define you based on both physical features and your personality features. There are overlapping thoughts from people around you and your inner thoughts, however only you can define yourself, no one knows you better than yourself. There are things only you know about yourself and those thoughts are important; even when they aren't the happiest ones. It's important to have your own thoughts because that is what makes you different. Being different allows you to have your own opinion and ideas. -- The facts around the silhouette on the data portrait are found through a collection of thoughts I've heard from strangers, friends and family say about myself. The facts inside the silhouette are some personal inner thoughts.

This data portrait is a representation of myself. The data represents how I’ve grown and it shows one of my biggest hobbies. The data I used is an arrangement of photos I had taken over the course of 3 years. In general, photographs are collected as a memory to remember something important but it is also a way of collecting data. Each photo represents a different costume and props I’ve collected since 2012. Through out the course of 3 years, I’ve collected a large album of photos from many different photo shoots, which gave me a variety to choose from. I chose to present my portrait in a timeline format to give an understanding of how I began to present day. As you look through the timeline you get a sense of how I’ve develop over time. Recently a large portion of my time has been spent on cosplay. From the timeline you can see that starting 2014 I’ve started to become more involved and active in costume and prop making. In my opinion, this is the strongest representation of myself, as I have developed a strong passion for cosplaying and through out the 3 years it has become an important piece to who I am as a person.

In the Tout bien rangé series, Armelle Caron deconstructs and re-arranges the city blocks of Paris, New York, Istanbul and Tamarac. At first view, the layout logic seems to be that of a comparison-based sort algorithm. Similarly shaped blocks are ordered according to size in ascending or descending order. On more complex shapes, this rule seems to break down, so next, one considers that the artist is trying to solve for a solution that fits all shapes pleasingly in a box, in order to force us to rethink geographies and urban plan. In combinatorial optimization, this would be the aesthete's version of the knapsack problem.

More importantly, the vectorial deconstruction of these maps reveals the city layout as text, and the city blocks as characters arranged in a font map. These font maps would not be very legible or even recognizable when not juxtaposed to the original city plan, but it is astonishing how, still taken out of context of original logic, the characteristics and morphology of the city whole are evoked by its parts. The radial layout of Paris tends to segment blocks into triangular shapes, the grid of New York City generates a lot of rectangles, Istanbul reveals its tensions between the old city logic and post-war modernization efforts as a type of cuneiform script while Tamarac's cul-de-sacs and golf courses produce an alien alphabet reminiscent of Kryptonese.
