...with David Dawson, Eliza Butterworth and Millie Brady
'My, but David Dawson was spectacular in this episode. His performance has always been a highlight of The Last Kingdom, but this week it was something else. Making a twenty-first century sceptic feel the anguished struggle of a ninth-century believer is no small achievement, and Dawson did that and more.'
'The Last Kingdom' series 2 Episode 6 still by farfarawaysite.com
Bernard Cornwell series The Last Kingdom returns to BBC 2 tonight. We chatted to its cast about what to expect...
âSeries two is also set to welcome new characters, such as Toby Regboâs Aethelred (âA godly man,â says Regbo, âbut actually, what Aethelred does isnât great. He talks the talk but doesnât walk the walkâ) as well as old characters with new actors playing them. The prominent role taken by Alfred and Aelswithâs daughter Aethelflaed this series required her to be recast with somebody slightly older.âSome of the stuff that happens to Aethelflaed I donât think they could have actually got an actual sixteen year old or anyone younger than that to play,â says new actor to the role Millie Brady. âShe has a bit of a rough rideâŠ. We can expect Aethelflaed to be much more than a subservient princess, Brady promisesâŠ. Re-inserting Aethelflaed into the story of England is an aspect of series two that Dawson is particularly excited to share. âWhat I love about this series is Aethelflaed, historically, was this amazing, fiercely intelligent, political queen of Mercia who was a major part of why England emergedâŠ.
âŠ.âItâs easier being a Mercian, says Regbo. âWeâre a more cloth-based race. It only takes one Marilyn Monroe-style wind toâŠâ Enough toilet talkâŠ.â
THE LAST KINGDOM star David Dawson has hinted that there will be much more at stake this time around as season two hits our screens.
âŠ.. As well as Alfredâs influence spreading, his daughter Aethelflaed will be playing a bigger role in this series as she is prepared to become a ruler. She is not the only newcomer to the drama, Toby Rego will be playing Alfredâs ally Aethelred.
Actress Millie, 23, admitted that she had been nervous about joining the show as a newcomer after watching The Last Kingdom: âIâd seen the first series and loved the first series.
"Tobyâs new on this series as well, we were both saying it was that weird thing of seeing everyone on TV before you know them then you come onto set and itâs like, âwow!ââ
Reflecting on why she took on the role, Millie said: âI think mainly because sheâs a real character in history, she is our only Anglo-Saxon queen of that era, so she was this amazing woman in history who was a warrior queen and a lot of what drew me to her was sheâs a protofeminist, especially in the climate that weâre in now. Itâs an amazing part to play and still so relevant.â
Toby, 25, added: âItâs really weird that you watch the show and then youâre like, âIâm in the telly now.â Itâs weird. Youâre asked questions by the character and youâre meant to be answering, youâre like, âwhatâs going on? Oh, Iâve got lines to say as well, I know what the answer isâ.â
He went on to say: âI spent quite a lot of time playing someone who was very courageous and always did the right thing and now Iâm not. I wanted to try and do something that was the opposite, so I canât give too much away.ââŠâŠ.
