Marathon

Just had one of those “Well, Yes.. of course” moments. I must have been in Grade one, or Grade Two at the time.. The “Walkathon” was an annual event in which you would bother Family Friends, Relatives, Neighbours, and random strangers, to sponsor you per lap of the school grounds that you would walk. This was all for some charity or other. It’s only now, over 40 years later, that I realise that the term ‘Walkathon’ was derived from the word ‘Marathon’. Yes. I know. Obviously. But the six year old me knew the word ‘Walkathon’ years before he knew the word ‘Marathon’. In fact, he even knew the word ‘Telethon’ before ‘Marathon’. (What is a ‘Telethon’? I don’t know if it’s still a ‘thing’, but in the 70’s, it was a very long piece of TV broadcasting, in which they would encourage the viewers to phone in and pledge money for charity, possibly a Children’s Hospital or something).

The Bagel

I don’t get/understand ‘The Bagel’. Essentially they’re a donut made of something that resembles doughy bread, right? A doughy donut. People make sandwiches with them, and the contents just fall through the hole.. Ridiculous!

Siouxsie Sioux

I've always quite liked early Siouxsie & The Banshees, and "Spellbound" in particular. HOWEVER... They rhymed "Bezerk" with "Shirk". Yes. Seriously. This is almost as bad as Rick Springfield rhyming the word "cute" with "moot" (which is possibly the worst rhyme in pop music history)
