"It won't be just you. I'm going to bring in all the packless wolves here. We need each other." Davis' eyes bore down into Qhuinn's, searching and calculating. She could be trained. maybe even as a fighter.

Qhuinn nodded, drying her eyes and squaring her slight shoulders. She was ready for this, and deep down, in the place where she drew her strength, she knew she could do it. “I am willing, you know that. I want to do this, with you, if you want me. I’ll make you proud, somehow, I promise” She sealed that promise with a soft kiss to his cheek, her own turning red at the mention of claiming. Her hand went instinctively to her ass, as if to protect it for as long as she could. “I, ah, think I know how that goes? But, the real question is, can you? I don’t want to cause problems between you and Seph, she already hates me”

"Seph will have to accept it," Davis said stiffly. He feared for their relationship, but what choice did he have? He was an alpha now, and he needed to bring a pack together. It was his duty. It meant safety, security, and if his sweet mermaid couldn't get past that... well, Davis would deal with that when the time came.

"This is for her, too. I need the strength of a pack behind me. She does too, else our pups will grow up at risk."

"Fine… don’t come looking for me when you get this solved, don’t contact me, if you see me between now and when I leave walk the other way. As far as you are concerned if this is how you want to treat me, you do not have a mate and you do not have pups… they will never know you as their father" Persephone picked her bags once more and turned from him. "I hope whatever this is— it was worth losing your family for."

Davis wanted to say he loved her, but he didn't want Persephone to come back. He hated to see her so upset, be he could work on mending her feelings after he knew she was physically safe. 

The werewolf sat on the edge of their bed in silence until darkness fell outside. It was time.

Qhuinn let her tears fall freely now, her face still buried in Davis’s neck. One of her biggest fears since she was turned was that no pack would ever want her, because she was different. So to be claimed at all, and by someone that she adored as much as this man, was more than she could have ever asked for. 

"I want this, I really do. I..have no family now. I’m just scared of letting you down, Davis.."

"All you have to do is behave. I know you're new, and I know you have some learning to do. I'll work with that. You just need to be willing to try. And... to be claimed properly." Davis wasn't sure how much Qhuinn knew about claiming, but it was intimate.

“You know how I was turned, Davis.. I’m not like the rest of you. I’m..dirty..” She buried her face in his neck letting the scent that she’d missed so much wash over her. She wanted this, but she was scared. What if she let him down, disappointed him in some way? Qhuinn finally looked up at him, her big gray eyes swimming with tears. “You..you want me? You really..want me?”

"I think you'll be a good beta," Davis said, and he meant it. Qhuinn kept her nose out of trouble. She could handle responsibility. "But don't say yes until you're sure. Pack life isn't for everyone. You'll answer to me, no matter what I say, and my word is final. Your duty will be to your pack first, and your personal life second."

"No? It was just..regular sex? He told me once that he couldn’t.. He probably just didn’t want to.." She stared up at Davis, more confused than ever. "It’s for the best anyway" she muttered. "I’m no good for a pack" A tainted, filthy wolf like her? She’d just bring them down.

"You seem fine to me," Davis sniffed. "Every pack member makes the alpha stronger. As long as I don't have to spend time chasing you down and pulling you out of trouble, there's no problem." And Davis could use all the strength he could get. 

"You want a pack, Qhuinn?"

"No. . " Persephone felt her body vibrating, she wasn’t sure if it was the rage at her mate, or the hormones for the pups but she shoved at his chest and instead of the usual brick wall she felt him move, even if just a little bit, she felt strong.

"You do not get to push me away, sit your ass down and tell me the truth, or this is going to get nasty" the mermaid warned, she could feel her pups, and then she could feel their power, the hormone they got from their father pumping through her

Davis rocked backward with the shove, but his expression didn't falter. "The truth is I have important things to deal with, and I need you gone for now." It was that simple. Davis had no intention of giving Persephone details.

"Why are you doing this.  . " Persephone felt tears running down her face as he pulled her close. "We’ve never closed ourselves off to one another… we’ve never lied, you have always kept me in the loope even when it scared me shitless… why are you throwing all of that away now. . "

She hated him for doing this to her…she hated that even when he hurt her like this he still had this power over her, and she hated herself for not being able to hate him.

"Just they way things need to be for now," Davis said flatly. The new alpha hormones running through him were amazing. Before this, Persephone's tears would have melted him in an instant. Now, he could stand them. He still hated it, but he could maintain his position. 

"Go," Davis sighed, forcing his gaze away from Persephone's beautiful, tear filled eyes.

Qhuinn reached up, gently touching his face. His eyes had changed, just like hers did when she was pissed. Pressing her fingertips to his cheek, she closed her eyes, trying to concentrate, to feel whatever the hell it was that he was talking about. But she felt..nothing.. Great..what the fuck was wrong with her now..

"No..I don’t feel anything.. Just..you.. But, you are different. I guess we all are now though. Is it..because I’m an Omega? Because I’ve never been claimed?" It made sense, she guessed..

"Harrison didn't claim you?" Davis tried to think. He could feel Qhuinn, but was it a link of friendship? He was new to this whole alpha thing, and trying to figure out the different types of bonds were complicated. Davis closed his eyes, trying to concentrate.

No, he couldn't feel her like he should, not like alpha's described being able to sense their members. It was a much lesser bond, that of mere friendship.

"He didn't."

"Trust you? You want me to trust you? I don’t even know you anymore, my Davis wouldn’t be doing this, he wouldn’t let me walk out that door and he wouldn’t be keeping things from me, my Davis wouldn’t have left me alone and scared for a week thinking he was dead, so I don’t know who you are, but you are not the man I love…  when you find him, send him back to me."

Persephone all but screamed at him as she whirled around, her eyes flashing dangerously as her grip tightened on her bag.

"I'm not letting you walk out for good," Davis said calmly. "I'm doing what I have to. I wasn't safe to be around before." The alpha hesitated. Persephone didn't know about his change in position. Should he tell her? Or wait?

"Trust me," Davis said again, then reached out to catch the mermaid's wrist. He turned her back towards him and pulled her body close, ignoring any resistance she may have offered. Davis wanted to hold her longer, to take in her scent, but he didn't want to risk Persephone changing her mind. Not yet.

"Do you even fucking care? You put me through hell, I had just lost my best friend, I thought I had lost you and I nearly lost the pups, do you not get that? You could have come back to a second funeral and you don’t even fucking care… ."

Persephone felt anger, hurt, sadness, loss and she was projecting it around her like an armor, he could have been dead in the woods… like Harrison, and he left her there alone to worry… the stress had been so great she had to be sedated, she nearly lost their children and he didn’t even fucking bat an eyelash… who the hell was this in front of he, because she didn’t see her mate, not anymore.

"You know I care." Davis hesitated. His love for her was the whole reason he was doing this. He couldn't tell her too much. If he did, she might try to stop him. Under normal circumstances, Davis would have focused all his attention to his expecting mate. He would nurse her, feed her, anything she needed to keep her well. 

Right now what Persephone needed was for these hunters to be gone, even if she didn't know it. Davis knew. Persephone was strong enough to deal with his absence. It would hurt her, yes, but she would be alive. Davis intended to keep it that way. 

"Trust me, Seph. I'm going to take care of you."

Persephone jurked back from his touch “No.  . you won’t, I’m staying with Tris for a week, then I’m leaving— you were the only reason I had to stay, and now I don’t have that any more, so it’s time to move on.”

The mermaid had to do what was best for the pups— Davis didn’t seem to want her as he once had, or the life they were going to have… losing Harrison broke him, and the man in front of her, she didn’t know who he was.

"Goodbye Davis…" she muttered as she picked up her bag, the one she had packed all those months ago when he had cheated on her, and with one hand on her belly she turned to leave.

Davis' heart gave one painful throb, then the emotion faded back into eerie calm. Persephone could leave, for now. When the time came he would find her again, no matter where she went. The mermaid might not have been mentally bonded to him in the way true werewolves were, but the pups within her were. Davis could feel them, his little pack members, and through that bond he would always be able to find Persephone. 

He nodded, acknowledging her farewell. Words failed him, and all the newly appointed alpha could do was watch.

Qhuinn felt the change in him but didn’t care. He was here, he was safe and so was she, and that was enough for now. Being around John had taught her that men dealt with grief in way different ways than women.. Then his words registered, confusing the shit out of her.

"Wait..pack? What..are you talking about…”

Davis looked at her blankly. "I'm the new alpha now. Can't you feel it?" The change had come across him suddenly, painfully. Davis had removed himself from Persephone while his body changed, his eyes blazing from yellow to red, his carefully measured testosterone skyrocketing. He was stronger now. Aggressive. Ready to keep his loved ones safe.

No Davis…. 

If I go, I’m not coming back… I was so scared you had been killed too, I had no contact with you for a week, I had to be put on bedrest because I nearly miscarried. You want to go off and brude, fine, but you do not it without your phone or letting me know first, I am your mate— not some toy you can leave to panic at a whim.

Davis heard her, but the words didn't alarm him like they would have a week ago. He was too numb to register like he should, and it didn't occur to him to apologize for his absence. 

If he came out of this alive, he would win Persephone back. He knew he could. If he didn't make it, then maybe it was best that she was angry. It would make things easier for her. 

"Go," he said gently. "I love you anyway." Plus, she was out of danger for the time being. The werewolf reached out, cupping Persephone's cheek and then sliding his hand down to her belly.

"I'll see you soon."

Yeah..not good enough. Qhuinn curled up in his lap instead, the time they’d spent apart combined with the loss they’d all suffered, plus her own loss, was too much. “We have to help each other..” she whispered. “We all just have to help each other..”

"I have to help us now," Davis said firmly. His arms wrapped halfheartedly around Qhuinn's shoulders. He wasn't soft and cuddly like before. He was cautious, cold, and thinking of other things. "This is my pack now. I'm gonna take care of it."
