Fic Complete: Aphasia
An Archive of Our Own, a project of the Organization for Transformative Works
At long last, the linguistics shadowgast fic is done.
Peace is a precious thing, and a fragile thing too. When the unexpected finally strikes Essek's delicate new life, he and Caleb are left adrift and alone and very, very, vulnerable. Fic Update: Master Stroke, Chapter 16
An Archive of Our Own, a project of the Organization for Transformative Works
Wizard fights, wizard arguments, wizard yearning. No specific CWs.
The next chapter of master stroke is officially complete (now in the editing stage) and contains, if I’m allowed to stay so, some of the funniest sentences I’ve ever written. I hope it’s worth the wait.
Heyyy, I'm a big fan of your work (your vampire Au was my favourite) and honestly it has inspired me to start writing my own fics (I have a google doc with almost 100 fanfic ideas but it's basically the same thing right? ☠️) I wanted to ask if you have any general writing tips or anything special about your writing process? You're amazing, keep up the good work
Thank you!!! I'm so happy you've started writing (the best news anyone who writes can get).
The bad news is that there isn't anything special about my process, besides the fact that it's the way that I write, and it's probably not the same way anyone else does it. Everyone will write and edit differently. I've figured out what works best for me over a decade of writing fics and stuff and attending dozens of writing workshops, though, so I'm pretty confident in my ability to give general writing advice lmao.
Here be a bunch of random tips ⬇️

chapter 4 of 4
Essek drives himself back into Berlin and sits in the apartment surrounded by the few of Caleb’s treasures which were never donated to a museum. Essek does not cry. Perhaps spending a hundred years preparing for inevitable grief dries the tears in advance, or the tears are sweated out slowly like an invisible mist. He doesn’t think too hard about it. Instead the grief comes and swallows him like a whale, and he is held there in the dark damp belly for a while. Nothing moves him and he moves little.

chapter 3 of 4
Caleb chuckles and leans down to kiss his lips, moving his hand up to the soft hair on the back of Essek’s head. Cradling his skull like this, Caleb briefly experiences every other moment like it from the past three hundred years, folded and pressed together like sheaves of paper in a novel. Again and again and again, all at once, he is kissing Essek Thelyss. “We will have so much more time together,” he whispers against Essek’s lips. “I don’t want to make you sad anymore.”

chapter 2 of 4
Caleb is unable to stop himself from imagining the place his mother and father were buried, four hundred years ago. Their gravestones are almost worn smooth now, and their names were never recorded in any local registry. Does he want his own name preserved in stone someday? He’s not sure. He looks out at the blue-black sky, away from the new city blocks, the electric glows, the industry. “It might not be long now,” he says aloud, and knows Essek understands what he means.

“Essek?” Essek lifts his head, and much of the hunter’s throat comes up with him. His mouth and chin are drenched in blood and his eyes are big and shine lamp-like. The bullet hole in his stomach is still gently sizzling. When he looks at Caleb, a little recognition lights up his face, but not much. He blinks, a mite of tension leaves his shoulders, and he goes back to drinking from the dead hunter.
summary: 1892, Chicago. Only a few years after their reunion, as they're barely re-igniting their relationship, Essek and Caleb run afoul of a vampire-hunter.

sequel to spare me the brimstone and hell towards heaven's door. chapter 1 of 4
Caleb stares at the pouch. “Bullets?” “They were taken from the corpse of a paranoid man in Paris, apparently,” Essek says. “He believed he was being hunted by supernatural beasts. It came to pass that he was, but the bullets never left the barrel of his gun, and they landed in my possession last winter.” He holds the pouch out to Caleb. “Take them.” Caleb does not take the pouch. “Why would I need them?” “Because I love you more than anything, and these bullets kill monsters. I would like to see you safe from harm.”
summary: The years pass, and Essek spends another glorious century by Caleb's side. But the future is due to arrive eventually, inevitably, and he's made a promise to Caleb to help find a cure for his immortality. So, one day, Caleb will be human again, and Essek will still be Essek.
