( aldis hodge, cis male, he/him, 30) ** ♔ announcing AJANI TESFAVE,  the CROWN PRINCE OF ETHIOPIA ! in a recent portrait they seem to resemble ALDIS HODGE. it is a miracle that HE survived the last five years and for that reason, they are FOR the kingdoms working together. reflecting on them now, they remind me of RAYS OF LIGHT BREAKING THROUGH SHADOWS, THE FEELING OF BEING WATCHED IN AN EMPTY ROOM, THORNED BUSHES DRYING IN THE SUN, STANDING AT CROSSROADS .

It was a miserable day outside, rain and wind pelting the sides of the palace without relent. Even Elizabeth, who normally had a high tolerance for bad weather, was forced to concede that there would be no enjoying the outdoors today, not unless she wished to catch her death out in the elements. 

That left her really one option for the day, if she wasn’t planning on going bored out of her mind. She typically hated being cooped up indoors, feeling a certain restlessness underneath her skin, a calling for the open sky and fresh air, but she’d long ago found her one solace when forced to be indoors for long periods of time. A library. Something about being surrounded by so many ideas and stories was freeing, as if she could make her escape if only she picked up the right tome.

She’d heard the library at the French palace was beautiful, but she hadn’t had the chance to visit it yet. As soon as she stepped foot in the doorway, she regretted that fact. It was easily the largest library she had ever seen, bigger even than the one in the palace back home (and curse her if her English pride didn’t smart at that, just a little bit), and she laughed in delight as she took in the massive shelves and books piled everywhere. As soon as the sound escaped her throat however, she realized she was not along, and turned to face the person who she’d intruded upon, unable to resist quipping, “And here I was led to believe the French had little time for more than the latest fashions and strong drink! They’ve proven to be much more erudite than I expected. That is, of course, assuming that these books have actual words in them.”

Sefu wasn’t necessarily a fan of the outdoors – that wasn’t to say he hated being outside, or anything as extreme as that, just that his tasks commonly kept him indoors, so finding something to keep himself busy while the weather took a turn for the worse had been an easy thing.

While he was familiar with at least the ruling families of each country, preparing himself for this summit before they even left Ethiopia, he hadn’t been quite as diligent at memorizing all the names of the princes and princesses. He hadn’t expected everyone to come, to be entirely honest – even with his own, he had advised against leaving their country without their royal family entirely, even if that had fallen on deaf ears, as with so many things since the troubles began – and he had been planning to catch up with whatever gaps were left once he could put faces to the names.

“I’m afraid you’ve been deceived, my lady – the French are far more adroit than they are given credit for,” he lifted his eyes from the tome of European royal lineages he’d been skimming, and gave the young woman a brief bow of acknowledgement. “Just don’t check the shelf on your right – from what I can tell, that one is strictly there for the aesthetic,” the corner of his mouth lifted in a dismissive smile. “Though those books still have words in them, just not particularly…useful ones,” at least the spines were works of art, even if the insides were complete gibberish. Like with most things, there was at least a kernel of truth in the French’s reputation.

the snap of a fan got his attention, hazel eyes focusing on the woman besides him. viktor tended to get a raise out of others. it was his special, yet annoying talent. at the young woman’s words, he approached her a he dried off his face. “ah, my sincerest apologies for that. truly.” there wasn’t a sincere bone in viktor’s body. at least, not visible to the public. his lips pursed at her quotation, before falling into a small smirk. “my, my, what a clever quotation. you are a scholar it seems. as am i.” he shrugged his shoulders. “i haven’t the faintest idea, madam.”

She lifted her chin as he approached her, expression shuttered in skepticism, but she nodded – somewhat glibly – at his apology, accepting it as sincerely as he gave it. Her own mouth curved in a smile and she shook her head with a soft chuckle. “Oh, I wouldn’t claim that for myself,” Beatriz shrugged lightly with a fawn of her lashes and a quick, sharp smile. “Yes, I can see how you wouldn’t,” she continued with a grin, glancing after the, by now entirely vanished, lady. “Never you mind, I’m sure if it was truly important, they’d have found a better way to make it clear to everyone, wouldn’t they?” she grabbed her handkerchief and held it out to him. “You missed a spot. On your neck,” she tilted hers to the side, to indicate where the stain was.

he simply laughed as the woman in front of him tossed her wine in his face before storming off. droplets of red wine fell across his jaw and neck, staining the pristine white under shirt he wore. the woman was probably warranted in her reaction to viktor (he was more than used to this by now), but he found in funny every time. smirking, he wiped his face and shook out his hair. “none of that caught you, right? i assure you i was the only intended victim.”

Beatriz harrumphed at his inane comment as she snapped her fan open and began waving it fiercely into her face, glancing between her departing lady and the laughing Viktor as she dragged on to the moment of silence giving her cheeks some time to cool. “Well – you’ve certainly made her angry enough, which spares me having to deal with her crying her eyes out in my chambers later, so at least there’s that.” despite the blandness of her tone, her gaze burned as she switched it to his face. “You know, I’ve heard the oddest thing the other day – never shit where you eat –“ she lowered her tone, making sure it wouldn’t carry, then chuckled at her own audacity, anyway. “ – I’m quoting, of course – “ she hurried to add with an angelic grin and a bashful flutter of lashes. “What do you think it could possibly mean?”
