I was going through the Mashle wiki and looking stuff up, then I got curious about how the characters answered that one question about themselves in the fanbook. You know, this one:
Whats your favorite type of opposite sex?
I went through some of them, particularly looking for queer answers. Here are a few I found.
Margarette: Someone stronger
Margarette is already confirmed to be non-binary, so this answer falls under the queer category, too, because they can mean both the male and female opposite sex.
Next we have Carpaccio: I don't know or imagine.
Big contender for being asexual with how this is phrased but gay is also in the mix a little.
Next up is Lance: I don't have time to think about that.
Yeah, we better hope Lance is gay, because there won't be any woman on earth who is ever going to compete with Anna.
Mash's answer: I'm not sure because I grew up in the woods.
Surprised his answer wasn't cream puffs, but it makes sense why Mash doesn't have a type with how he lived. What I can imagine Mash's future answer to be is sth like "someone who trains with me and likes cream puffs" but it is interesting that wasn't already his answer. Some asexuality can be at play here, too.
The gayest answer of them all is Orter: Not interested.
Asexuality isn't out of the question, but the phrasing Komoto used is extremely direct. These type of questions/answers are for the readers to understand, and if Komoto wanted to convey asexuality specifically, he'd have used another qualifier like "I'm not interested in anyone." The dead flashback friend is also a trope I've seen with subtle queer coding e.g. in Fire Force.
Tomorrow I'm going to look at some other characters. Dot's was pathetically sad if I remember correctly.
