âI swear to God, huh?â There is a teasing lilt to his words as he finally gets tired of observing the irritated woman slam her palms against the innocent door of his apartment. It has been amusing, to say the last, to watch as she seems to unleash her fury; heâs not in a hurry, so he couldâve continued until she exhausted herself, but this time Liam decides to be the one who ends this game. For what reason, heâs not certain â perhaps it is the surprise of seeing none other than Odette Harrington anywhere what belongs to him.
âI didnât know time had turned you into a believer. Is that what you do nowadays? Joined the forces of the Almighty Lord.â The corners of his lips tug upward, but no sound escapes â itâs like theyâre in a public place, attempting to communicate something scandalous with the constant threat of someone eavesdropping looming over their heads. His eyes take in every detail of the woman ( what has changed, what has remained the same ), and each new discovery confirms there is no way what he just said could ever be true. She might look like an angel, but poison is always best concealed underneath pretty things, yes? Besides, if there was anyone who personified the phrase ânot all that glitters is goldâ, it was him.
Liam uncrosses his arms and lets them fall back to his sides as he stands straight. Once again, he allows the silence to fall over them, indifferent to whether Odette enjoys it or not, when he makes his next move. Calmly, he saunters over to her and gently pushes her aside, so he can open the door. Itâs done with a simple movement of his hand and then, after an audible click, Liam pushes it open and steps inside his humble abode. Another quick movement and heâs turned around, one arm gesturing toward the other rooms of the place. âPlease, come in, Harrington. You can tell me over a glass of champagne to what do I owe this pleasure of seeing you abuse my apartment door.â
Odette visibly jumped when she heard Liamâs voice. So much for her having the upper hand for bringing this to his front door. Still, she took a second to compose herself. Though she was ready to confront him, a part of her was still nervous of seeing him in person. It was a lot easier to flip a page in a magazine than it was to face up to him in person. Maybe she should have thought her plan through a little more before jumping on the plane. Or had a plan at all. But she was tired, and frustrated, and ready to put a stop to the messages.
âIâd join forces with anyone and anything if it meant I got what I wanted.â She stated, her voice firm as she turned around to finally come face to face with Liam. Her anger subsided for the slightest of moments as she saw just how much had changed since she had last seen him. He was no longer the young fool who she had been head over heels for. Liam was now older, his features looked harsher, or maybe that was just the way he looked at her. Of course she still had love for him, she always would. He was her first love, perhaps her only, but now there were only miles and miles of distance between them.
âAnd while I appreciate the offer, Iâm not here for pleasantries. This isnât some social call.â Odette stood at the threshold of his apartment, in two minds as to what to do. Her heart begged for one last decent conversation with Liam while her head screamed for her to deliver her message and get out. However, she knew what she needed to say was probably best delivered behind closed doors. Not that anyone would have heard them in the empty corridor.
Stepping inside his home, Odette closed the door behind her with a soft click. She had to say what she wanted before she lost her nerve, and so with her chin held high, she looked at Liam with a hard gaze. âWhat I want, and what I came here for, is for you to stop with the messages. They arenât funny, they never were, and quite frankly, Iâd have thought youâd have been more imaginative, and kind, if you wanted to talk to me again.â
