This is such an understated moment, and yet it encapsulates one of the biggest reasons I love Dean so much. This small act of kindness as Dean notices her interest in the tabletop jukebox, and goes right ahead and starts it up to play a song for her. He’s such a sweetheart, and it’s the little things, like this, that show us how instinctual that really is. (13.17)

I was going to get caught up, and then a friend on Facebook spoiled me about the One Thing that would make it difficult for me to go back and actually get caught up, so as of right now I’m like a month and a half behind. Think the last episode I saw was the 300th.

This is one of my favourite behind the scenes picture of this season, because it’s the episode where the hellhounds finally get hold of Dean and I think one can see, how Jensen prepares himself for this scene . Idk, I really like this picture.

Mary smiled, shaking Michael’s hand. “It’s nice to meet you.”
“What were you doing in here, Mom?” Dean asked, looking around. Mary rolled her eyes.
“Lifting hundred-pound boxes repeatedly,” she replied, smirking. “I was visiting the cats. Dubby was acting weird when I fed him last night, I wanted to see how he was doing. I’m heading out to see Jude next. How was she when you fed her?”
Dean smiled. “She’s doing well. She wasn’t favoring the leg at all, so she must be feeling better. She can probably go back out in a couple days.”
Mary nodded. “Make sure you show Michael the list of escape artists. He’ll need to know which animals to watch out for.”
Dean smiled. “Mom worked really hard to make sure we were always happy and knew that we had her for anything we needed.” It was clear from his voice how much he loved his mom.
He shook his head. “I went to college in Kansas City on a full scholarship, I just wasn’t a nerd about it,” he replied. “Then I worked in the city for a while and had an apartment there. Last year, Mom had a really bad accident, and it was hours before anyone found her. After that, I decided to quit my job and move back here, so that she wasn’t alone and trying to do everything she did when she was thirty.”
Michael nodded slowly as he mulled that over. He couldn’t imagine doing that for his own dad, but… “That’s what family is for isn’t it? To look after each other when needed?” he was just particular about who he called family.
“Besides a place like this? The utmost respect to you and your mother, but I don’t see how you’d have time to enjoy it if you try to handle everything around here on your own.” In his own experience too much stress could ruin even the best of things. Hard work was one thing, and not something he’d ever shy away from, but there was a difference between that and stress.
Dean shrugged. “Mom struggles with letting anyone else have any control over this place. Even me. It took a while for me to convince her to let me do the basic things like keeping the animal lists and running the website. I get it though. She’s been running the farm on her own since her parents died when she was eighteen. It’s hard to give up control of a place you’ve been running for forty years, especially when it’s taken so much.”
He led Michael outside and towards the dog house, which was bigger than the cat house and had a large slat fence stretching out behind it. “As for me, I’m just happy to be able to help my Mom out. Sure, sometimes I miss my life back in Kansas City, but I’d rather be here helping her than there worrying about her being alone.”

Dean chuckled. “Yeah, there’s a lot of names and faces to get used to. But, with the exception of our personal animals, each kind of animal follows a pattern. Once you learn the patterns, it’s much easier. For example, all of the cats are named after makes or models of cars. We have VW, or Dubby, Chevy, Ford, Mercedes, Porche, Focus, Buggy, Volvo, Mini Coop, Pontiac, and Ferrari is the one who just had the kittens. They haven’t been named yet.”
While he named the cats, he showed each one to Michael, walking down the row of cages until he came to the end and turned to Michael. “Mom let me choose the pattern for the cats when I was five. I was obsessed with cars at the time. The dogs are all named after scientists and inventors. That was Sammy’s idea. The cows are named after literary characters, and the sheep are named after characters from shows or movies. The horses are mostly named after famous horses from history or movies or books, but sometimes they get named for other things too.”
He waved towards the horses. “My horse’s full name is Chevrolet Impala, after my dad’s car. Mom’s horse’s full name is Sing Hey Jude, after the Beatles song. Sammy’s got a horse named Palo Alto, because he was born right after Sammy set his sights on Stanford in the tenth grade.”
“Okay, how did you get ‘Baby’ out of Chevrolet Impala?” He asked curiously as he stopped to pet Volvo who’d come up to see who the new person was and to ask for attention.
“Also sounds like you have a geeky younger brother?” he hesitated a bit on ‘younger’ but he somehow doubted Dean would have called an older brother ‘Sammy’ it didn’t quite seem like his style. “It also sounds like a theme one of mine would have come up with when we were kids.” he added as to not offend Dean when suggesting his sibling might be geeky.
“Mom always told us that Dad called the car his baby,” Dean explained, shrugging. “She used to joke that he spent more time with that car than he did with his real babies. Mom and Sammy call her Imp though, mostly.”
He chuckled, nodding. “Sammy’s the biggest geek ever. Got a full ride to Stanford. Used to spend hours with his nose in a book while Mom and I worked on the farm. Mom always gave us the choice. We could help her out or work on homework or study. She never wanted us to feel like we had to work on the farm with her. She told me once that she had a savings account for both of us for college, and that the money’s still there in case either of us ends up needing it.”

“As long as none of them are a one ton clydesdale who likes to charge people I’m sure it’ll be fine.” He’d ended up with a broken foot after that encounter but you didn’t spend time around horses without ending up with a few broken toes or a flattened foot sooner or later, it was just sort of part of the lifestyle.
“But yes, knowing who to watch out for would be better than learning it the hard way, especially if any of the escape artists also spook easily. Which was the nightmare combination really, curious but easily frightened.
Mary smiled. “Luckily, none of our skittish animals really want to escape. As skittish as they are, they know they’re safer here than they are anywhere else.”
“Our worst is Macbeth, one of our cows,” Dean told him. “She doesn’t just get out of her own pasture. She can get into the others. I found her on the far side of the mare’s pasture once. Another time, she showed up in our house when Sammy was still at home and left the back door open. There’s nowhere she can’t get. I’ll show her to you.”
He turned to Mary, leaning in to kiss her forehead. “I’ll see you later, Mom,” he murmured. Mary smiled, patting his arm.
“Come find me with Jude when you’re ready for dinner, okay?” She looked up at him, then turned and walked out, heading towards the barn. Dean turned to Michael.
“Want to meet all the cats? Or do you want to move on to the dogs?” he asked.
I love how they picked Jensen Ackles, the Goodest Boy, to play the archetypal “bad boy” Dean Winchester
And because of that, Dean turned out to be a soft bean himself. :’)
