assimilation
This picture shows people from many cultures blending in to become an american.
In elementary school I had to go through assimilation in order to not be deemed an outcast and therefore unworthy of companionship.
discrimination
This picture shows that this place only hires whites and any other race or skin color is banned.
I was discriminated against at smart and final just because I was an Asian when I was buying crackers.
aura
The pictures show that that person has a glowing aura.
Whenever I meet someone new, I give off a scared aura that is like a turtle in its shell.
Reflection of the Week
Last week I had a rollercoaster of events to go through. Being the oldest and also being fluent in my mother’s native language comes with high expectations. For the past few days and much of last week was the same old mundane roles that I have to do. Sometimes I wish I had the resources to be able to hire someone to help take care of my chores.
Every Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday I would always be forced to play chauffeur for my siblings. Afterwards, I have to give a hand to my neighbor and help her with any documents or anything that she does not understand due to her own son not knowing the language. For instance, I translated for her what the pharmacy technician was saying in a way that she would be able to comprehend and fully understand. In addition, I had an abundance of tests to study for with so little time to do it. I know for sure I did well on my sociology test, but not so certain about my history of rock and roll test.
Even though I have been on this ride, I know that I have to stay positive because not everything is about me. Plus when life gives you lemons, you make lemonade. At least I know that the upcoming week will better. I will be able to get my strength back, with more time to relax and a decrease in my weekly responsibilities. Spring break is a great time to rest and recoup, and thankfully my siblings have break at the same time, allowing me to have more free time.
As a lesson learned though no matter what there is always that one strand of positivity somewhere. If I am a downer, it will affect the people around me.

War Stories?
During the time that I was born there was no war going on that has impacted me in any personal way. As most people know, I am Vietnamese American, meaning I was born here but my parents were born in Vietnam.
Growing up, my great aunt would always tell me stories about how my mother and she were refuges, running away to America for a better life. During the war of North Vietnam against South Vietnam, my family endured a lot of strife and hardship, and hoping for a new beginning and some semblance of safety that their home country couldn't provide them at that point in the time. Just as my mother’s preteen years came, the horror of the war hit. You could hear gunshots at every corner; one day you can get arrested for being accused of being a “rebel”. If my mother did not escape, the communists from the north would take over the south where my mother grew up and lived in her entire prepubescent existence, making life unbearable.
What is a Life Backpack anyway?
If you were to dig into my life backpack you would find a whole abundance of wonders and stink bombs. However, the main components you can grab out my backpack is my faith, compassion, and life experiences. Without my faith I do not think I would be able get to where I am today. I grew up in a Christian Methodist Church ever since I was 5 years old.
As I got older through trials, tribulations, and temptations, numerous occasions of doubt called out to me, dancing before my eyes in an attempt to sway me onto a path of unfaithfulness. Through this troubling time, I forgot how to confront my obstacles head on and instead wallowed about in my miseries. All that was in my train of thoughts was revenge. I constantly promised myself that I would find a way to be the messenger of revenge to those who did me wrong.
