Week 1: Film Analysis
Film: Wings of Desire
First Impressions:
I found the contemplation of different realms and of angels to be intriguing for me. I enjoyed the change of shot from black & white to color to emphasize the point of view of the angels. The acting was amazing and the subtle crescendo of momentous event with the quick change of scenes was visually intriguing and added to telling the story.
In this reality, angels watch over the lives of mortals on earth. They are unable to experience the world through our traditional senses. One angel who has observed for a long time the tendencies and behavior of humans want nothing more than to experience life as a mortal. This angel by the name of Damiel. Damiel realizes that by being human, you are bound by different constraints than of being immortal, yet the suffering and parallels of the two conditions become apparent. The film leaves the viewer thinking about the context in which we judge our reality and the concept of a more fulfilling life.
1) The Title refers to the symbol of wing as a personification of freedom, thus “Wings of Desire” is a clever usage as the plot revolves around Angels.
2) the use of stationary perspectives, zoomed in to show motion that is rather blurred. The scene of the subway train zooming by in a ambiguous blur illustrates this. The technique makes me feel a sense of true speed. Instead of further perspectives that do not make a viewer perceive speed on a human level.
3) The Film Uses color to show difference in perspective. The Angels live and view life in a black and white realm; while mortals live in color. This allows for the audience to distinguish who’s point of view they are seeing.
4) The sound in the film is light and somber. The impression of a somber world is portrayed by the use of the music.
5) The perspectives of characters are almost always entirely in scene and then cut to a face view as the scene progresses
6) Their is a visual pattern of scenes showing movement and order from different perspective. Some are shot from the top, other from the side.
7) The film does not fully explain what is the fate of Damiel and ends with “To be Continued”.
8) the climax is very apparent with the kissing of the main protagonist and his love interest. The film leaves the viewer contemplating her words.
9) The film does not go into the greater detail of her words, which I find to make the message and climax more endearing and lasting.
10) The film ends with Damiel atop physically the world on a statue, symbolizing his newfound knowledge.
