ofandromedas:
Andromeda slides into the backseat of Daisy’s car, the stiffer material of her protective clothing crinkling as she settled. It occurs to her that she’s never seen Daisy properly working before; even with the shock, she could still acknowledge how bizarre it was to go from one extreme to the other. Her gaze drifts from the back of her friend’s head to the window, street lights glimmering hazily through the glass in the dark early morning hour. “I trust you,” she repeats. “If anyone can figure out what’s happened, it’s you.”
Daisy’s final assurance sinks in, and she realizes she could be a suspect. What were the odds that her cousin’s dead body would have shown up at her workplace, of all places? Combined with her distance from her family, and it was certainly enough for the police to consider her shady. “I didn’t. I swear,” she responds, her eyes catching Daisy’s briefly in the rearview mirror. “I mean, I can’t help but - well - we didn’t meet the terms of their ransom, did we? Lucius and I. That part is my fault. But I wouldn’t have ever hurt him. He was just a kid, Daisy. All I wanted was for him to come home.” Her voice catches a little at the end and she clears her throat. “I’ll tell you - anyone - whatever you need to sort out what happened.”
Daisy knew they'd have eyes on them. Everything would be monitored when they got to the station. If the mole was real and not some hoax made up to drive her up the wall with frustration, they'd be watching too. In the car, at least they had a little while to talk. Andromeda's declaration of trust meant more to Daisy than she'd care to admit. "I'm a cynical bitch," Daisy replied. "People lie, and they have secrets, but I trust you too." She sighed, not because trusting Andromeda was difficult, but simply because talking about her feelings at all was challenging to her.
"I know you didn't do this. You don't have to convince me." The very fact Andromeda felt the need to plea, 'I swear', it broke her heart. "Stop it. It's not your fault. They might have done this even if you'd paid the ransom. His death is on the hands of the person who hurt him. Nobody else. Especially not you." She just wanted to reach into the back seat and squeeze her hand, to hold her and reassure her, to have a damn beer with her and help her. But they were almost at the station, and there would be eyes on them. "Just try and stay calm, okay? You're a witness, not a suspect."
