“you’ve definitely lied to me!” selene exclaims, before giving her sister a few seconds of suspense “you told me i looked good in that louis vuitton dress, in spain, and i made the worst dressed list!” she nods along, demi never lied when it mattered, not really. she could trust her on this, “well, if he does, can he at least knock the old bastard out this time? every time his weird assistant calls, i ignore her. when’s she going to take a hint?” selene was sure the answer was never, just like selene’s constant answer to the invitation to photo-op lunches that would be used as propaganda in northern cyprus. “oh, we’ll find you an engagement, i’m sure of it. there’s plenty of pretty girls here - we just have to figure out which one you can stand to be around!”

“okay, well, you looked fine. it was the dress that was ugly. and you still looked better than half the people there, so... whatever.” she shrugged, and then squirmed a little, suddenly uncomfortable. selene had bought the lie without question, demi could see that on her face. she’d been hoping that unquestioning acceptance would make her feel better, but in truth it made her feel worse. she really never had lied to selene about anything major, and now... but it was for her own good. “probably never. she calls me, too, as if there’s anything i’m going to fucking do for her. my only comment for her would be pick better nail polish.” she nodded, then, and looked down at her hands, fiddling with her thumbs for a moment. “and which ones are interested in girls. i hate this stupid bullshit, i miss the days when andreas was the one agreeing to be sold like a slab of meat.”

“oh! esmeray!” she spotted the girl just up the block and jogged a little to catch up with her, holding up a hand in greeting. “hi! sorry, i hope you’re not too busy? i just wanted to apologize for our conversation at the gala. i’ve been thinking about what you said, and you were right.” god, the words were painful to say, but nikos’ own words were ringing in her ears: where there’s an opportunity to be had, take it. “i was hoping we could talk. civilly, like you wanted. maybe over coffee or tea? i’ll buy.”

“you can’t lie to me,” selene starts, “my assistant’s been hearing some weird stuff from nikos’ aides - is he doing something crazy again? please tell me he’s not going to get into another fistfight with that old man.” she meant the duke of turkish cyprus, or whatever bullshit they were calling it this month, but “old man” seemed to fit him better. selene couldn’t stand him, he made her skin crawl, “you were just home - and i know nikos likes you better than me!” 

“i’ve never lied to you,” she said. this was in itself a lie. she had lied, but only about trivial things: no, i don’t know where your burberry trench went; yes, i blocked her number like you told me to. she’d never lied about anything substantial. this, though, gave her pause. “he’s not going to get into a fistfight. or at least he’s not planning to.” truth. “honestly, i don’t know what he’s planning.” white lie. “all i want to do is play my part and let nikos play his. i’m just here to be protected and to find an engagement, and nikos knows what he’s doing.” truth. there, three mostly-truths. surely selene would be satisfied with that.

“ my ENTIRE timeline is still about the english and that engagement. i could yawn. like i get it. i was there. “ she tossed the phone to the side and sighed, slumping into the chair. it felt nice to talk mindlessly about frivolous things. “ did you witness any arguments or anything ? i think i spent too much time in the rooms at the palace. “

“ew,” she said, not looking up from her own phone. “why do people give a shit about that engagement? a european is marrying another european. it happens every day.” the world’s royalty couldn’t stop marrying each other. “not really.” she finally set her phone down and looked up at the other. “i got there late, and then i just stayed with selene the whole time. it was kind of a lame party even without the murder, to be honest.”

selene takes a few seconds to let that sink in. someone was… dead. not just anyone - the man they were all here to, apparently, celebrate the downfall of. all of the petty bullshit from earlier in the night seemed stupid, in hindsight. she turns to demi, her mouth hanging open just a little bit, “did i hear that right?” she asks, hoping the answer is “no” even though she knows it’s going to be the opposite. death still makes her nervous, in general - she hasn’t attended a funeral since her father’s. all of this reminded her too much of andreas’ death - she’d felt trapped, then - but in a nightmare, one that she still hadn’t managed to escape. she turns, “can you - my phone’s dead, can you - is yours still charged? we should let nikos and mom know what’s going on.” it was easy to block everything out and be practical instead of dwelling on things. “do you - let’s sit down? it’ll be - i’m sure it’s about to be a long night - we should set up camp somewhere away from other people. these heels are killing me already.” 

she was frozen, fear curling in her gut and creeping down her spine. her sister’s initial question barely registered; she was too busy staring at the stage where the investigator had been standing. she was feeling a number of emotions, one of which was some sort of strange relief. she spent a lot of her life terrified of opening doors. it was a strange fear to most, but something in the back of demi’s mind always wondered if there’d be a body behind one or another, waiting to be found. in this instance, the fear was justified; there was a body in the palace, just waiting for someone to find it. demi couldn’t help but feel glad at the fact that she wasn’t that someone. selene’s voice startled her out of the stupor she’d fallen into; she jumped, reached into her bag, produced her phone. she handed it to selene without a word. “the password’s the same as it’s always been,” she said. and then she nodded, swayed on her feet a little before she moved toward an empty table at the edge of the room. she sank into a chair and took a trembling breath. “can you get me something to drink, please? something strong?”

“isn’t protection the whole point of our secret club?” she was musing aloud, not really paying attention to who was around her. “i mean, didn’t that guy get shot in rome, too? you’d think they would stop having parties. all the murder doesn’t really inspire confidence in the security.”

her eyebrows practically hit her hairline. “hey dude,” she began, her voice low. her fingers were trembling around a whiskey tumbler. “i have a really neat suggestion: maybe try reading a fucking room.”

“hey! you told me to pick from the collection, it’s not my fault that we have similar taste. and that all of our outfits usually end in headlines,” selene throws back. it takes a few seconds to settle in that she’s not alone anymore - that her sister’s finally arrived and she’s not the only cypriot standing. she turns, and pulls demi into a hug - trying to avoid messing up her hair or bunching up her dress in any way - that could be a disaster. “oh my god - i was going to say the same thing!” selene exclaims, with a grin, “it’s just weird, too - like, come on, at least be classy. i mean, we aren’t, but you’d expect it from some people!” selene grins, taking a few seconds to look around the room, “okay, so tell me everything! nikos should have come with you - i miss hearing him bitch about what i’m wearing in person. god, i never thought i’d say that.” 

"they’re not going to end up in headlines this time; at least our skirts hit the ground. did you see the youngest english princess? the canadian one? her ass is out at her own party. tmz’s not going to care about us.” and it was good, because demi really didn’t want a phone call from their mother. she let her sister pull her into a hug, taking the same care not to ruin her outfit as she returned it, before stepping back and taking a sip of her drink. “we don’t have to be classy; it’s not our party.” she didn’t need to worry about looking good when no one was looking at her, anyway. “oh, it’s more of the same. mother won’t stop talking about the premiere she has coming up, and nikos never tells me anything before he does it. i’m sure he’s got something up his sleeve.” she shrugged. truth be told, she didn’t really care what her brother had in the works; she just wanted to do her part. she trusted him to do his. “what about you? how is it here? is it miserable? there has to be somebody in this program with taste. besides us, i mean.”

“jesus, you look like a hooker right now. nikos is going to blow a gasket.” as if her dress wasn’t equally as revealing, as if they hadn’t intentionally coordinated. she’d snuck up behind her sister, holding a drink for each of them. a flight delay meant that she hadn’t arrived in london until just before the party started, and hair and makeup thus required that she didn’t see her sister when she landed. a half-assed reunion would have to do for now; they could scream and giggle in their hotel room later on, but the current event required some solemnity. “have you seen the turks? the youngest one looks like one of the weird trees from james cameron’s avatar, and not in a good way. who in their right mind is wearing full runway couture to a murder celebration? tacky.” at least her dress qualified as evening wear, even if it was a little less than appropriate.

“Thank you” she replied taking one of the canapés one of the waiters was taking around the room. She popped it into his mouth and continued looking around the room chocking the second her eyes fall on the King of England. “He’s allowed to be here?” she asked panicked. “I mean- he’s just.. walking around?” The whole party already felt really wrong, despite how much she despised the man and he’s famous behaviours. her eyes drifted over to the king, standing as he was across the crowded floor, before they slid back toward the turkish princess standing beside her. "sure, why not?” she asked. she took a sip of her drink and dragged her eyes contemptuously over the girl’s outfit. and then they flickered back up to her face, and demetra allowed her lip to curl. "your brother’s here, isn’t he? clearly, they let anyone in.”
