“thank god you’re here,” selene starts, the second she sees george. it’s been forever since they’d last seen each other. two years ago, they ran into each other in.. paris? ibiza? she wasn’t sure, but she’d run into him and they’d stuck together for a bit, playing wingman for the other in plenty of loud nightclubs and boujee bars, “i’ve been having another crisis that only getting blackout drunk can solve - please tell me you’ll come along? i need someone who understands me.”

“thank you,” he said, accepting the box, a little wary. it was probably just a formality but it was strange to receive a gift from any of the cyprus royals. most of all selene. “i’ll let layla know you stopped by,” he set the box on the counter. “yes, she’s very healthy and growing well. thank you.” he repeated it because he didn’t know what else to say. “um, how has your family been?”

she nods along, trying to act as if this was a normal situation at all. she’d done this on nikos request, as if that made any sense. maybe he was trying to lull them into a false sense of security, selene didn’t ask too many questions of her older brother. she pauses, looking down, “we’ve been alright.” they hadn’t, it had been two years since andreas’ death just the week before, the family was in shambles. but aslan didn’t need to know that. her mood switches the second the pleasantries seem to finally over, “we don’t have to do all of this, you know. i’ll just leave, you got the gift, you can’t claim we disrespected your heir to curry favor in the part of cyprus you stole, we can all move along.” so much for being amicable. this would’ve been easier with layla, at least selene knew she wasn’t awful, deep down.

“you know i don’t exactly like many people around here anyways, but she’s just something else.” she’s growing more and more bitter by the second and she’s definitely hoping something will prevent the disastrous not-date from happening. “she called me her bitch, right in front of me. if i had a little less self-restraint, she’d be dead now.” kenny is visibly irritated, the memory of it still haunting her. “i only remember the boy who acts like a teenager even though he’s definitely not one. i will never understand what that irish prince sees in him. is the classy one related to him?”

selene nods along, her own dislike of asali had grown from everything kenny had said about her. when you’re dating, you’re supposed to hate the same people, right? even if they weren’t... completely dating, selene thought she’d brought kenny onto the side of hating the turks. “i wouldn’t have had any, i would’ve just gone straight for her hair. they never expect you to start with a fistful of hair,” she’d only been in a fight once or twice in paris, back when she was running club to club every night. she’d won those fights by not abiding by a single rule, though. “the classy one? sutton? i don’t know if i’d call dating your mother’s running mate classy, but... wait, do you mean the smart one?”

selene almost chokes on her drink. there’s plenty of marilyn’s milling about the party. selene honestly thought it was a little tacky, even if she was currently dressed as a beloved 90′s character,  “please. please do it. most of them look awful, anyways - the party city wigs are killing me.”

“ There is always so much to do. Thankfully my grandmother and aunt are a big help. ” The three women made a great team. Louise was grateful for their guidance and dedication. “ No please. I would never ask anything from you. ” Cyprus and Selene’s family had enough on their plate. She would not add another burden to that country. “ You are already a great help by being my friend and giving me support. ” Which sounded cheesy but it was the truth. Selene was a light in a sea of darkness.  

“that’s great, really,” selene couldn’t help the bit of envy that crawled up her spine. she felt horrible about it, even if demi insisted she shouldn’t. people had died - one of the dukes had died, but they were free. selene would give a lot more than a few lives if it meant reunifying nicosia, as much as she hated to admit it. she smiled, as dumb as louise’s words sounded, they were nice, “well, the least i can do is take you out to lunch? i found a place that serves really good greek food, it’s not too far away.”

“congratulations, on your little one,” selene states, holding out the wrapped box. you know it’s bad when she was hoping she’d run into layla instead. but nikos had insisted they bring over a baby gift, as some sort of sign of good will. she wasn’t quite sure what a pair of shoes for a child that would never remember this would do, but she did as she was told, when it came to her brother, “i hope they’re healthy, your majesty.”

Louise smiled and stopped to wait for Selena to reach her level. “ I’m so sorry for that.” Her schedule was truly a nightmare. There were never enough hours in the day. “ Thank you. We are all much better off without those monsters crawling around our lands. ” They had lost part of Hainaut and Namur and she was still upset about the peace treaty for that reason. She had not managed to free Belgium entirely and had lost part of it. Her heart broke everytime she thought about what she had had to concede. She felt like she had failed her father and her people. She forced a smile and pushed that dark thought out of her mind. “ Now we have to rebuild and grow strong again. ” They needed to move forward. 

“it’s alright! it’s a great reason to be busy, now that they’ve retreated!” selene exclaims. she hopes that one day she’ll be in the same position as louise - her country newly liberated and her schedule so full she can barely take a breath. although, that feels a bit like a pipe dream most of the time. “i’m sure the rebuilding won’t take too long - i’ve been following the humanitarian effort. do you need anything, from us? we don’t have much to give, resources-wise... but, personally? if there’s anything i can do, let us know?”

for a moment she only hears the words i missed you, and that alone is enough for her heart to quicken its beat. then she fully internalizes the words and honestly, it’s even better. “fucking asali.” kenny breathes, now even more intensely bitter of the outcome. she hadn’t truly known if selene had bid on her (she had hoped for it, even suspected in her wildest dreams), but hearing the confirmation from selene herself feels surprisingly good. it almost trumps the knowledge she’ll have to go somewhere with asali mwezi. “nice of you, trying to save me. i honestly wish you’d won, did you hear what asali called me?” she manages a genuine smile before the thought of asali’s words twists it into a grimace. “ naturally i prefer your company over hers. was your evening enjoyable even though you lost me?”

“fucking asali,” selene repeats, with a smile. she loved to talk shit, especially with kenny. she was kind of hoping the conversation would take a turn there, if only to keep them going for a little while. “i wasted my bids - i should’ve thrown my necklack up there, too - just to give me that edge against her,” she pauses, for a few seconds, “no? what did she call you? is this finally some gossip you’ve heard that i haven’t?” selene’s got an amused look on her face, and that fades into a very fond smile, “it was fine, really. i lost both of my bids - i thought i’d force yihwa to hang out with me, but the american beat me. the classy one, not the one in seventy yards of denim.”

“i missed you at the auction,” technically, selene hadn’t missed her. she’d bet way too many points on her ex girlfriend and then lost to a mwezi and then got drunk and acted stupid to cover up from it. “if i’d known asali was going to bid on you, i would’ve really broken the bank just to save you the trouble. but i guess that’s the point of the blind auction, you don’t know who you’re bidding against,” selene had been rehearsing that in her head for the past fifteen minutes - trying to make the fact that she threw a ton of money away to win kenny and still lost an almost non-issue. she was sure if kenny even knew she’d been in the running.

     - ‘ WHO KNOWS ? i haven’t partied with you in ages, possibilities of you growing boring lately are actually very high. ’ the norwegian almost asked how drunk was selene at that moment but that wouldn’t been a dumb question: it was very obvious just how much by her ex’s face, there was no need to ask anything. ‘ are you sure ? i’ve seen a couple bacardi bottles. do you want me to see if they have the apple flavoured ones so it’s easier ? ’

“i’m not boring!” selene insists. she didn’t think she’d gotten boring, at least. it had been so long since she’d truly gone out, though - maybe silje was onto something. maybe she should be drinking away whatever was bothering her, just like this! “apple flavor sounds great. well, any flavor sounds great, honestly. i lost all my bids back at the auction, so i’m wallowing about it.”

“louise!” selene exclaims, doing a little half-run to catch up with her, “i’ve been trying to get on your schedule for two weeks! your assistant’s started to ignore mine. i know athena’s annoying, but not that annoying,” she stops right in front of the princess, “i just wanted to say congratulations, on getting the french out of belgium. it’s - i’m always happy to see people overthrow their invader.” even though she’d just been bitching to demi about not being able to wear french brands for a while, she did mean her statement.

“come on, silje, it’s me. have i ever been the wrong kind of crowd at a party?” selene smiles at her, joking easily. she’s already had a few too many at the date auction - losing out on her bid for kenny and then getting shot down by weibke had really soured her mood, so she’d fixed it with champagne, “look - i’ll do shots of whatever they’ve got back there, just to prove it. but you have to do them with me.”
