the thing about “representation” in media is that, even now, it only matters if it’s white representation. white lgbt characters. white independent and strong female characters. white mentally ill characters. just look at shows like stranger things and 13 reasons why, gaining widespread popularity posthaste and a renewal for a second season without even having to try. even shows like sense8 and orange is the new black that claim to be diverse and progressive still have more white characters than characters of color and / or put more focus on their white characters than any others.

you can’t possibly claim race plays no role in this when representation has only ever mattered if the face of it was a white, conventionally attractive character. if that’s not racist, i don’t know what is.

#yes #i'm glad for any step forward but by having conventionally attractive whites it's almost like. romanticizing or making it seem like it's not #a big deal? bc like. an lgbt+ white character will face issues that lgbt+ ppl face but not the way a nonwhite trans person would. yknow?#and in general how can you possibly be like 'oh it's sufficient enough' when people face different things and you're ultimately erasing the #problems that other people face bc of their identities?#like with oitnb: there are some v good nonwhite characters but they are almost always shoved to the back BECAUSE of assholes like piper or #alex or nicky. we got .5 sec of poussey backstory in like. s2 or 3?#and the rest of it--in flashback form though not much--came BECAUSE SHE DIED.#and i know that piper is the 'main character' but it's still an ensemble cast and all that bullshit #between her and alex and all those moments. i don't feel like i know anything about the other characters #chang had that one episode and she's still the 'weird old chinese lady' who no one actually knows about #and who just comes on screen to be generally odd #there was so much spent on pennsatucky's character development #but we continue to see someone like taystee filling in some kind of role without any buildup to it #they do the most to make whites 3d but when it comes to nonwhites they're like. 'ok. this is how we want x to be & this is how we'll make #them.' but there's not much beyond that? they just throw it out there and expect us to accept that much #and what about when alex literally formed a nazi alliance group and started a race war?#and then suddenly SHE was the victim bc 'oh poor lil white girl just wanted to protect herself from the VICIOUS latinas'#never mind that piper is bi: she's a piece of shit and that's enough to warrant good representation #shows need to hire nonwhites to tell nonwhite stories #and writers need to work HARDER #sj #famously huge queue

every single day i am haunted by that one bastille interview with dan and kyle where theyre asked about their most awkward romantic encounter and kyle talks in great detail about getting wanked off in french class and dan is completely silent, avoids the question, and asks the interviwer instead. what did that interview mean? was kyle emotionally stable enough to share that? why didn’t dan answer? where is the video now??? does it even exist???????
