I've been a bit slack with my posting this week as it's week 11 of 12 at uni, aka the craziest, most stressful part of the semester. I added up the number of assessments I have to do in the next 2 weeks and almost cried when I realised that there are seven, plus one major essay that's due two weeks after the semester ends. Busy times ahead (if only I could stop procrastinating)!
With that in mind, I thought I'd do a post about my university and course.
As I've mentioned previously, I'm studying Public Relations (PR) at RMIT University at the Melbourne City campus. The campus has majority of it's buildings centralised on the corner of Swanston and La Trobe Streets, however there are countless other buildings situated all over the CBD/Carlton area.Â
I absolutely love this campus. While it's nearly impossible to drive to, being in the city, I can get on one train and be at Melbourne Central in around 20 minutes. Step outside Melbourne Central and RMIT is literally across the road. My breaks are never boring as I can just walk over to Melbourne Central, and now Emporium to do some shopping or get some food. MY wallet suffers over how close uni is to amazing shops but I wouldn't have it any other way! I'm also within walking to distance to basically any part of the city, and if I'm lazy, there's an abundance of trams that take me anywhere I want to go.
The buildings themselves are also quite new and modern, fitted with a high supply of Macbooks and PCs all loaded with all of the software you could dream of. My favourite building is the new Swanston Academic Building, the second picture listed above, also referred to as Building 80. It is amazing inside and out, and the lecture theatres and class rooms are both beautiful and incredibly functional.Â
I started at RMIT this year, transferring from Swinburne University of Technology in Hawthorn where I did a year of a double degree in Business and Communication with PR and Media as my majors.
PR at RMIT was my first course preference in Year 12, and even though I got a high enough ATAR score to get in, I sadly missed out on a place by one study score point in Year 12 English.Â
I was happy to get in to Swinburne, however I discovered that there was a heavy focus on design associated with the course I got in to which doesn't really interest me (plus, I am hopeless at drawing etc!), so I stuck it out for a year, applied for RMIT again and, thankfully, got in!
My course is a Bachelor of Communication majoring in Public Relations. What I love about the RMIT course is that there is such a strong focus on PR, which is ultimately what I want to do as a career. That being said, I still get to choose a few electives and have an elective strand of Politics, Economies and Communication. So this semester I'm doing four subjects: Specialist PR, Communication & Social Relations, Politics/Economies/Businesses, and Popular Music and Society, which is my elective. As you can see, I've got my PR focussed subjects, and a couple of others to break it up.Â
While I complain incessantly about uni during the stressful periods of semester, I do love it. Anyone who is looking at RMIT as a university or TAFE, I couldn't recommend it highly enough.Â
