Stepping carefully back into the world of tumblr with some bug photos I've taken over the last month or so here in southern Arizona. This tumblr used to be almost strictly dead animals/vulture culture posts but as I get back into using it, expect to see more insects and spiders. And other fun stuff too!
SO with twitter going down the m*sk shithole, I’m reactivating this account. Stay tuned!

I’ve got an Etsy shop! I’ve got a few things listed, so please check it out!
Arizona vulturing?
Hey all! There’s a good chance I’ll be relocating to the Tucson, AZ area in the coming year. Are there any vultures in the Sonoran desert? Can you find much? I’m excited about the prospect of seeing lots of new plants and animals, but I’ll be pretty crushed if the desert isn’t a bountiful place to find bones. Any input would be wonderful!
A few weeks ago I took the skull collection out for a group photo! I added a lot of new specimens in 2017, including a javelina, wolf, albino doe, wolverine, bison, and pronghorn!
Here are some portraits of the roadkill deer I encountered this fall! Most were left where I found them, though the heads of the antlered bucks did return home with me, as did the little deer in the third photo. He was extremely fresh, and I butchered him and was able to fill my freezer.
For sale! These bones are sourced from a roadkill coyote and raccoon, both from the northwoods, and were cleaned by me. Both animals were male, the raccoon being pretty old and the coyote being a younger individual. These bones were degreased and whitened in peroxide. A few of the larger leg bones could stand a bit more degreasing but it’s not very noticeable. They come packaged in an antique, wooden cigar box.
$40, including shipping, USA and Paypal only. Message me if you’re interested. Thanks for looking!
If there’s one thing I like more than dead critters, it’s insects! I’m currently assembling a bug-themed jacket with pins and patches and I love it so far.

At long last, I got a wolverine skull! This was one old, gnarly dude, as you can see from his teeth and sagittal crest. I wonder what kind of bones he was chomping on while he was alive.
My mustelids of Michigan collection is complete! (Wolverines are considered extirpated from the state, but just a handful of years ago one lived and died in lower Michigan. They could still be here!)

Are there laws where you are protecting albino deer? In TN it's illegal to hunt them or even own parts of an albino deer, even if it was taken in a state where it's legal.
Albino deer are legal to hunt here, as long as you have the proper deer hunting license and you’re not hunting within the city limits/protected areas/etc. About four or five years ago, a guy shot a large albino buck very close to if not within the city limits. Of course he wasn’t fined, but many people were (rightfully) upset, as it was a buck that frequented yards and birdfeeders and was pretty used to humans.
I worry more about the road! A couple weeks ago an albino doe was hit by a car in town, and just as was the case with the albino deer I found a few months ago, whoever hit her just left her there. I think the biggest threat to these special deer, though, is people who feed them and allow them to get accustomed to humans. Losing that fear of people is what leads them into traffic or right into a hunter’s rifle sight.
Sorry I’ve not been active in the last month-plus. There’s not too much to report lately, but we have had an albino buck visitor. We’ve seen him three times now, only catching glimpses of him from across the river. He’s got six points. I hope he stays safe and that people leave him alone.
I’m pretty active on twitter and instagram! My twitter is dead_blue_deer and my instagram is jorie.dupre.
Gift for @dead-blue-deer for our anniversary this weekend <3 We saw a white buck across the river from our house not too long ago and I’ve been wanting to paint one since.
Last week, I did a program about some of Michigan’s mammals with a local Girl Scout troop! It was a great experience, and especially rewarding since a big focus of what I do is to employ dead animals as a means of education. Using pelts and skulls, we talked about what adaptations certain mammals have and what they mean in regards to how they live! We discussed the white-tailed deer, coyote, raccoon, badger, and beaver. The group of 15 girls was extremely enthusiastic and their grades ranged from kindergarten through seventh grade – quite a span of ages! I’ve found that kids have a lot to say, and when prompted, are happy to share their experiences and knowledge.
What I found to be especially interesting, and I’m sure this is a regional difference, was that none of the girls seemed fazed when I told them the pelts and skulls came from roadkill and trapped animals. They didn’t mourn for the animals, as I’ve seen children from urban areas do; in this neck of the woods, many families hunt and trap, so seeing dead animals is a norm for kids. Most of the girls could readily identify these critters before I even introduced them!
This group was a lot of fun and as a thank you I was given a few boxes of Girl Scout cookies!
Some plant studies based off my own photos. Bloodroot, rose, trillium, and several haworthias.
