There are moments when a zed stops being a mindless, invasive species in Jorge's mind and becomes a symbol of everything he has lost. His home. His job. His friends. His sense of security. Every small, meaningless, ordinary thing he once took for granted. Looking at them will sometimes bring all of that grief rushing to the surface, and suddenly he's no longer thinking about conserving energy or maintaining distance. Jorge will pursue a zed that he should have simply left alone. He'll see one wandering away down an alley and follow because something about its existence irritates him. Jorge knows he doesn't need to kill it. He knows there could be others nearby. He follows anyway. The baseball bat comes down harder than necessary.
