John finds out Hosea is alive only when he has to kill him. Hosea survived being shot in Saint Denis and escaped, but was far too injured to return to the gang until it was far too late.

The news is the worst emotional whiplash he’s had yet.

Unlike the others, Hosea makes it easy to find him. He’s old, there’s no doubting that. It’s a miracle he’s still alive. By 1911 he is 87 and starting to wonder if he’s been cursed to outlive his tattered family.

When they meet up in Blackwater after John has returned from Mexico, Hosea points a gun at him.

Tells John to do what he has to. That it’s okay. He’s proud of John for looking out for his family. They both cry.

They’re embracing when John makes the first and final shot. Hosea didn’t hurt at all.

In his satchel is a dollar, thirteen cents, and a stack of pictures of better times, back before the turn of the century. They’re tied together with a note - For John.

The agents arrive to clean up the mess before the public can see it. On a whim, John checks Hosea’s gun.

It wasn’t even loaded.
