The demon ignored the itch on his skin and the certain feeling of wrongness when he entered the church. Its pews were empty, holy water drained, and dust had settled over every surface. But the walls still sent chilling echoes into his ears of passionate sermons and harmonic hymns. Cloven feet tapped against stone floors and wings brushed the holy walls.

The only color left came from the portrait the demon couldn't take his eyes off of. That face, immortalized in molten sand and bronze, was a familiar and yet distant likeness. The demon wept and reached for the heart that the figure had once offered to him before. His fingertips touched the tip of the dagger. How could anyone have punished a love as pure as his?

The glass figure's eyes stared impassively forward as the demon mourned the man persecuted for holding a demon's heart.
