What the hell is this... who is this diva??? No seriously who is this... I don't know...
...Uhh anyways... since I drew MeQuot as a princess... I decided to follow that up by making Devesto into a queen. I'm gonna be frank... it was pretty hard to translate Devesto's iconic features (at least in the why I draw him) onto a design like this without him not looking like Devesto. He's got to keep his tall, beefy build and thick eyebrows, else it is NOT Devesto.
I wasn't happy with my initial costume design for Carol, I decided to change some details of the outfit, such as ditching the belt, replacing the armbands with cross symbols on her sleeves, and giving the black parts of her outfit a more rubbery texture. She also has visible pupils now, yay! I think she looks a better like this.
I ended up making another OC for my Die of Death "Bunker Crew" AU. This lady's not affiliated with the Bunker Crew directly, but instead she's just one of the various workers at "The HQ", which the Bunker Crew sometimes have to visit and/or protect. That said, this lady definitely knows more about the threats that Civilians have to deal with than one would think at first.
Some fun facts about her (Click "keep reading" to view):
Halfy is pretty obviously not a pureblood Civilian. The most clear giveaway of this is that she has only one eye and eyebrow, though she somehow still sees the world as if she has two eyes, but has other unusual qualities, such as being strong for somehow who doesn't have that much muscle, having sharp teeth, and possessing a long mane of hair that tend to have a mind of its own (which is surprisingly useful for filing paperwork).
Halfy is French on her mom's side, and she can speak both French and English. Her dad is apparently from Australia, though these claims are not easy to verify.
Halfy prides herself on being one of the most "generic" people you could ever meet. She is skilled with numbers and anything that involves paper, able to fill pages will all the information and calculations they need with ease. She tends to not be all that sociable, but that doesn't mean she has no friends, it's just that she tends be wary about which friendships she forms. Her closest friend is Raigken (in the Bunker Crew AU, Raigken is a robot that does some of the heavy lifting for The HQ's employees), whom she seems to be particularly fond of due to their lanky stature and silent disposition reminding her of her father. That said, her "generic" personality seems to have been built up as a self-defense mechanism, as she fears becoming a government test subject if she ever were to go to prison.
While Halfy almost wanted to go for the "shaved head" look in her teens, she decided against it as her hair reacts violently to getting a haircut. She's thus opted to keep her hair long, though she usually ties it back.
Halfy is cousins with Jean Fromage, AKA Artful (The two aren't that close of cousins though, as their specific relationship is that their mothers are cousins). She was the one who gave Artful his iconic half-mask; Halfy originally wore the mask to hide her lack of an eye, but decided she didn't need it anymore. These days, Halfy has a rather mixed perception towards Artful; she has happy memories regarding him, but she also sees him as a failure and a reminder on why one shouldn't let their emotions take over them.
Halfy does have a strong affinity for magic, just like Artful. Unlike with Artful, though, Halfy's powers where wholeheartedly embraced by her family, especially with her mom having a big interest in the occult and book collecting. That said, she is uninterested in using her powers for evil and just opts to use them to make some aspects of her life more manageable.
Halfy's relationship with her father is an... interesting case. Her father doesn't legally exist, but he does exist out there as a sort of neutral figure who like to observe the Civilians, though he can do horrific things to them if they do anything that upsets him. He does know a fair amount about the Killers, even having been a mentor figure for Pursuer by helping him perfect his ability to stalk and turn invisible. Due to his legal non-existence, Halfy's father is usually not an active presence in her life, but he still sometimes occasionally sends her mail and notes (even when she's as The HQ), and he also does show up to attend some holidays (mainly Father's Day, Halloween, and Christmas) with her. Halfy's parental situation does unfortunately make her the subject of "your dad went to go get milk/cigarettes" jokes, which infuriates her because they're actually untrue. Her dad's not a deadbeat, just someone who has to keep distance to avoid unwanted attention.
Halfy's favorite animals are butterflies, especially the summer azure (Celastrina neglecta). She sometimes collects their exoskeletons and strores them away in her personal museum.
Halfy's favorite flowers are saucer magnolias. She doesn't like roses all that much, and she used to be afraid of them due to an incident where she bled from being pricked by a rose's thorns while gardening and thought she was going to die. That said, she has gradually overcome her fear of them due to learning more about how to protect herself and also forming a friendly acquaintance with Kind Gal, who does have a fondness for roses.
Halfy thinks Thec "looks funny". While Halfy doesn't like Thec all that much (her dad doesn't like him all that much either), they're surprisingly on good terms.
I still haven't been feeling all that happy with how I draw Pursuer, so I decide to freestyle it and draw him based on what kind of "vibes" I want him to give off, regardless of anatomical accuracy or even clean linework
Also yeah you can tell that I just LOVE blurring my images, unsharp masking them, and then mixing them back with the original image to create some... interesting effects
Drawing more Die of Death skin characters... I think I had more fun drawing Kind Gal compared to her original counterpart Evil Guy. Also, the red hair and the bouquet weren't my idea, they were based on teasers for an upcoming remodel of her!
Some design notes:
I did roll with the "mannequin in a costume" interpretation for Kind Gal just as I did with Evil guy, so... that means Kind Gal can't open her eyes. They're just drawn on, along with her eyebrows and freckles. Also she's technically still bald (her hair is a wig) and she still lacks a proper nose. The mouth is still real, though.
While Kind Gal's redesign seems to replace her cane with a bouquet, I decided to keep her cane here because I personally think that Evil Guy and Kind Gal don't actually have that good mobility due to being mannequins and thus lacking proper bones and muscles (they can still run fine for short distances though).
While this doesn't have to directly do with my design choices for Kind Gal, I felt specifically inspired to draw her for the beginning of Pride Month because... she personally comes off as kind of queer to me? She's not explicitly LGBT or anything, but her description being "She want it forgive!" implies that she USED to be Evil Guy (or an Evil Guy), but changed into a better person and is anow seeking to make amends with those she hurt in the past? Sounds pretty trans-coded to me, though I don't know if that was the actual intent of the line (though she is considered non-canon in vanilla Die of Death so who cares if someone interprets that line that way).
I'm gonna be frank, I just did not like Cana from To Hell and Back's design, even though his song, Love Me, eventually grew on me. His design just didn't have that much flair and distinctive qualities to make me interested, which is why I was SO hyped for when Cana finally got a colored reference image for him posted on To Hell and Back's Caard page because it meant I could finally reimagine his design, complete with drawing him in color. His color scheme was actually pretty okay, it was just the finer details like the costume design I wanted to change.
Some design notes (press "keeping reading" to read):
This reimagining of Cana was kind of overdesigned on purpose. I wanted to lean more into his nature as someone who likes VTubing and otherwise being theatrical, so I thought it'd be fitting to give him an outfit that would look pretty difficult to wear in real life. That said, the amount of skin the outfit is showing does work in Cana's favor, since it gives them room for their tail and wings.
This design for Cana did take some visual motifs from deer with the inclusion of antlers and a short tail, which I thought would be fitting since Love Me does reference deer a few times and alludes to Cana's backstory as the "prey" of a toxic relationship. I also did take some inspiration from flying foxes, mainly with the addition of bat-like wings to Cana's design.
I changed the look of Cana's horns pretty drastically. I kept the colors the same, but I changed them to look like antlers, with their specific shape being inspired by the antlers of a sambar deer (though not an exact match). And also since I liked the idea of the Department Heads having their horns spiced up with some sort of motif (a cake-like look for Sarai, a star for James), I decided to give his horns eyes. Sure, they look like leaves from far away, but indeed, they are functional eyes. Envy is infamously kind of a difficult sin to allude to visually (Some sins, like Gluttony and Greed, have obvious symbolism you can turn to like food or money), but eyes do seem to be a popular choice, probably because Envy usually manifests as constantly observing others because you want to be just like them. Plus, I think the eyes work in favor, because it'd be much more difficult for someone to backstab him now.
The front of Cana's outfit was changed pretty drastically. I thought Cana's outfit looked too similar to James Vela's 2021 design's outfit, so I wanted to give him different upper wear. Instead of a sheer sleeveless top, I opted to give him a form-fitting black shirt that also functions as his gloves, though it also has cutouts in the front and cuts off high enough to expose the scarring on Cana's chest (I don't know if Cana's design was actually SUPPOSED to have scarring on his chest or not as it's kind of hard to tell with the art style he's drawn in, but you know what, I'm rolling with it). I did keep the pants and the middle of the outfit relatively the same, though.
I ended up changing Cana's eye color from black with green pupils to red and blue with green pupils because I think it helps bring more attention back to his face, since those colors aren't used anywhere else. I do think Cana would still switch up the look of his eyes sometimes, considering his depiction in the first verse of "Love Me" (which is meant to look like a Japanese visual novel) gives him green eyes with black pupils and a more 90s anime-esque eye shape.
I wanted Cana to look more "royal" considering he's a Department Head (which is presumably a pretty high-ranking position), but I thought giving him a crown wouldn't be as fitting compared to someone like Micah, so I instead opted to give him... a CAPE! If there's anything I really wanted to add to his design, it was definitely the cape; capes seem to bring out the theatrical side in anyone! However, the cape isn't actually a part of his outfit, even if it looks that way at first glance. Instead, Cana's wings shapeshift into the cape and vice versa.
I may or may not like this freak a little too much
Tbh I find drawing Pursuer outside of the Roblox art direction he usually has because he's just so simplistic yet... weird. He ALMOST looks like a Civilian or even a human being, but his skin from neck down looks like rock and his eyes are big and kind of hard to read. I wasn't even that happy with my original attempt at drawing him like this, so I ended up changing his claws to stand out more and giving him thicker limbs (kind of like those of a bear). Getting his expression to look good was also kind of difficult because I do have a bit of a pet peeve for when people draw Pursuer and his expression looks too "normal", like he's just a person with pale skin and green sclerae and not a humanoid creature motivated by sheer hunger.
I haven't finished Famica Nesmi's demo song yet (though it should be out soon), but I've already gotten to work on a CVVC voicebank for Famica Nesmi that aims to help make the voicebank more optimized and clear up some redundancy issues with the original CV voicebank. I'm aware it's quite the leap, but since I had already prepared a bunch of syllables for Famica Nesmi while working on its CV voicebank, it hopefully won't be too difficult, and you might get to see it by this June! :)
I had a dream that a new Civilian ability was added to Die of Death… and it was named "Building Tools". It gave the Civilian no hat, but instead some sort of tool, possibly a toy hammer or the F3X BTools. The ability would allow the Civilian to build new map elements, such as walls, platforms, and slopes, though they would only last temporarily and could be damaged by Killer attacks. Given the ability's insane potential, the ability reduced the Civilian's HP to 25, making them pretty reliant on their structures for protection. I have no ideas what horrors could come to be if this ability was combined with Caretaker or Bugle…
In the same dream, I had also dream that some of the Killers had aspects changed about them. Clawsguy was now… taller and rounder for some reason (though I don't know if the same applied to Seesaws), and more notably, Devesto got a new intro cutscene, courtesy of a new voice provider. I don't know if the voice provider in question was from a new actor, or Rick Hunter recording better-quality lines for the character.
