The educator in the above video shows how utilizing technology in the classroom can be done to create an accessible reference video for their classroom. Students often need to be able to access materials that will help them complete a project. In this case the student is being asked to cite a resource using MLA formatting specifically using the Citation Machine website. The educator provides a walkthrough for how to use it and potential conflicts that may occur. This can be accessed on the phone or in this demonstration through an IPad showing how to utilize a mobile device to help students access this information anywhere.

This is perfect example of using a cellular device to enhance the research in a classroom project. A 6th grade classroom is conducting research and using their devices to find additional information to support their projects. Then the students are posting their research information and questions on a Google Doc which enhances the entire project for all students via collaboration.

This is a perfect example of combining project based learning with mobile device technology, specifically iOs. Students researched a project on Cuyamaca and created a complete news special using their mobile devices. This included research, creation, recording, editing, and publication of the project. This is an excellent video showing how to take your mobile device classroom to the next level.

This evaluation guide includes all of the important things to look at when determining the educational value of an app. Most importantly it asks you to evaluate the app from the perspective of the standards connection. All resources placed in the classroom must be evaluated regarding their standards connections then differentiation, feedback, cost and usability. For me if an app can receive high marks in these 5 areas it is a quality app and deserves further evaluation.

Bloom’s

After reviewing Bloom’s Taxonomy for Technology usage, I am focusing on the Evaluating aspect. I personally believe the ability to evaluate a source for accuracy and validity is one of the most integral skills a student, or anyone for that matter, can develop. While I tend to value it more as a history teacher due to the amount of primary and secondary sources that are used in the content. The largest part of my teaching is evaluating perspective in order to determine the historical “truth.” There are multiple ways I can use an app in our classroom to help evaluate sources. Mark-up styled apps will allow the students to annotate and CLOSE read a source in order to analyze the perspectives being presented. This way students are interacting with the text much in the same way the AIR testing requires them to interact.

Another way I could foresee an app helping with evaluation would be if apps like Newsela or ReadWorks developed programs or extensions to their programs that allowed students to find and identify sections or portions that are a sign of bias/poor evidence/or needs additional resources to prove validity.

Technology that allows students to collaborate in ways such as blogs/vlogs are also ways for students to evaluate sources together. The only concern I have with using blogs to evaluate for bias/validity is that it is dependent on the students ability to evaluate these sources. Whatever technology used needs to be able to able to controlled in order to prevent misunderstanding of information.

VR Reflection

Reflection: Virtual Reality in the classroom has unlimited potential. As an urban school history teacher, VR presents the possibility of bringing field trips and professional visits to a group of students who most likely would not have the ability or finances to traditionally participate. I can also envision VR providing a more "realistic" classroom experience for students who cannot attend school whether it be medically or through discipline. Being able to throw on a VR headset and fundamentally feel as if you are a part of the classroom is exciting. With today’s cell phones being capable of recording 365 degrees and the rise of VR headsets, it is only a matter of time before these are a part of our classroom. Embrace it! VR is a wonderful and easy idea to implement in to the classroom.

Creation Reflection

Apparently I always seem to select the program I am going to have the most difficulty with to use. For this creation project, I selected using The History Project to create “memories” of the Civil War using paintings and photographs of battles. The idea behind this is to assign these to my students in order for them to develop their own concepts of what the Civle War really entailed. Finding CC photographs and paintings was easy, however the actual creation of the project was not. I could not for the life of me figure out how to link these in to a Timeline so that the students would be able to evaluate the war in a chronological order. I think that with a little more digging around and spending a little while actually manipulating everything, this website could be even better than what I did with it.

Assessment Reflection

Honestly, I have used SurveyMonkey before but not with as much interest on creating a high quality survey. I struggled at first with trying to figure out how to embed the images in to the actual survey. I thought I would be able to embed them in conjunction with specific questions. I am sure with more practice, I could embed videos for my students to watch then answer a survey question regarding the video as an assessment. I enjoy the ability to access my survey either online, on the phone or mobile device/tablet. Having multiple levels of access at a reasonable financial rate is something that is beneficial to my urban school classroom.
