“So what brings you down to my office today?” Jean Pierre asked the girl in the chair across his desk. He folded his hands over his memo on the needed supplies for the science room.
“W-well, Mr. Klotz is out of the office, and I heard that if he wasn’t available, then I should go to you,” Cassidy muttered timidly.
“So I see... What is troubling you then Cassidy?” He asked with a raised eyebrow.

“So what brings you down to my office today?” Jean Pierre asked the girl in the chair across his desk. He folded his hands over his memo on the needed supplies for the science room.

“So tell me here Mr. Della Robbia. What exactly did you do in Biology that caused Mrs. Hertz to send you to my office this time?”
“Uhm, M. Delmas…” Jim, the teacher aide, walked into the Dean’s office with caution. Franz had warned him not to tell anyone. He had been jumpy, paranoid. Moreso than just “working on a computer experiment” (in the basement of an old factory, really?) would call for.
But what Franz was doing wasn’t right. Wasn’t safe. Jim had to go to someone about it.
The young man shoved his hands in his pockets, staring out the window instead of meeting the Dean’s eye. “I think one of our facilty is involved in something dangerous. And I wasn’t sure who to go to.” He grinned and rubbed the back of his neck. “I’m not too sure I should be going to anyone. But I think, maybe, I need to.”

Jean Pierre did not look up at first. His mind was wrapped up in a notice he was penning for the school board. He had to get more funding for the science equipment Mr. Hopper wanted for his students. It was about time they updated the microscopes after all.
Mr. Delmas looked up now from his notes to the clearly troubled teacher assistant, Jim. He came highly regarded from his last employer, NASA apparently. Clearly this was more then finding some teachers making out again in the break room.
“I see. So you came to me to report on this dangerous stuff in the hope I can decide for you? Please sit down then and explain it to me. I have a meeting to get to soon with the board. What’s troubling you?” He asked, trying to stay calm. What could Jim of found out about his teachers?
She looked at the clouds, at the children running for the building. Maternal instinct battled with self-preservation. Everything else was immediately forgotten.
What about the other children on campus? Dorms, other classrooms, the courtyard.
No, no, the school had plans for this kind of thing in place. The other teachers would take care of it. Just get inside.
She grabbed his hand, following him. A final glance at the clouds as the door shut.
Children were talking to each other. The man in the track suit was doing his best to help M. Delmas keep everyone calm. Was the building itself swaying a bit or was that just her imagination?
She glanced at the windows for any stray children.
The windows.
"We— we should all stay near the walls. The foundation might be secure but I’m not sure about those windows." Not really caring if it was her place or not, she walked towards the wall and started pushing desks away from it. The bookcases, a chemical cabinet— those she wasn’t sure about one way or another but it might be best to avoid them as a precaution.
Jean Pierre mentally tallied the children that were in the building here with them. He glanced a look out a window to see other teachers usher students in. He made a note to be grateful they had a severe weather meeting last week after classes. He noted some taking desks to block the windows before he moved away from them.
"Then our safest place would be he furnace room downstairs. There are no windows there or access to the sewers. The builders had made sure the foundation could withstand an F5 hurricane. Professor Hopper was adamant when he help me set up the plans when we got the grant to build it. I don't know why, but I am grateful for it now." He commented to Madame Lewis' comments.
"Jim? Can you carry Della Robbia down since he is out cold still? I'll lead the way as I have my keys with me. Once down there, see if you can reach out to the other teachers as well as the lunchroom and gardening shed to see if any of the children are there. Those two places have no safe place to keep the kids safe." Jean Pierre asked the bigger man.
"Of course Mr. Delmas, SIR!" He said, saluting him. Jean rolled his eyes a bit, seeing the army side of the Gym teacher come out.
"Follow me now everyone. We can get nice and warm down there. I'm sure this storm will pass quickly." He tried to reassure the worried children.

Her mind tried to run away from her. Not officially dead din’t mean he wasn’t still dead. Not even his employer knew where he went. He might have just died in some way that was so terribly mundane that CARTHAGE didn’t notice. He could have gotten into a car accident. He could have been attacked by a stranger not connected to any project. He might have gotten too depressed and—
Stop. No. He wouldn’t do that. He couldn’t do that.
Shaking hands wrapped around her upper arms, nails digging into her biceps. Suddenly she was very thankful that M. Delmas wasn’t looking at her, was beautifully ignoring the terror and struggle on her face.
She tried to swallow before answering him. Ridding herself of the knot in her throat. A cough or two served as a cover, an excuse for the crack in her voice.
"Yes. We— we really didn’t see much of each other once he started working here, and I started working at— at the hospital a bit after that." She tried to smile, like it was nothing. Just two friends who fell out of contact.
Muscles contorted her face, eyes peppered red from straining against tears. Was this a normal expression for this situation? Everything suddenly felt very muddled. He’s gone.
This was a mistake. Coming here. She wasn’t ready for this. (Would she ever?) And this cover was a mistake. M. Delmas was saying too many things that hurt and shook her. And she hadn’t even been hired yet.
Get a grip.
Get out of here.
Somehow she had convinced herself that he was dead. No other reasons made sense right now.
She was cracking, barely holding the strangled notes of her little song and dance.
Was this all that it took? Or was it everything slowly building to this?
"I— I can finish up the tour later… I— I need to go." She couldn’t even think of an excuse.
Jean Pierre turn to look at her. His usual stern self broke for the women who was barely holding it together. There was something more to the connection between her and Franz. Something she is not telling... or she may not be ready to tell him. Not telling seems the right path since she is about to be his employee and he her boss. There are some secrets no one tells their boss out of fear for losing their jobs.
"Very well. This rain makes it hard to see anything. Kadic is much better in the-"
BOOM! POW! ZAP!
The ground shook under them as a storm appeared over the horizon. Jean Pierre looked up as the storm moved quickly towards the school. The distant boom could only of been the iron gates closing them all in. Fear settled in him as he look to the storm. A distant tree in the park crashed with a loud THUMP! The thick umbrella flew from his hands as the storm came closer to them all.
But his duty to the children came to him. He turn to see some in the courtyard. He thrust a hand to the distant Science Building. He knew them by name, but he dare not yell out to Millie, Tamiya, Hiroki and Johnny. By the time he said them all they would be in danger.
"GET INSIDE CHILDREN! NOW!" He yelled over the storm's cries in the distance. The wind flew with enough power to knock anyone over. A look at the kids and he saw the overweight, track suit wearing Gym teacher step up to help a fallen child. Jean looked again as the blond boy looked up. A purple spot on his head... Odd Della Robbia. The tree branch in his hand was all Jean Pierre needed to see to know what was happening. That blasted program XANA was after those warriors. So then it was Jeremie he saw in the woods and Odd came back to warn the school of the storm. He watched Jim grab Odd and help him to the distant science building.
"Come inside with us, it is not safe out here! The Science Building's foundation is the strongest one on campus." Jean Pierre whipped around to tell Madame Lewis. He held a hand out for support from the bustling winds. His thin, grey hair whipped around his face.
She was silent for a few moments as they stepped outside. Trying to remind herself that this man wasn’t a threat, even if he was standing far too close for her paranoia to be comfortable with.
Public space, interpersonal space, intimate space— normally the thresholds of interaction for people. But to a woman who had been constantly harassed and threatened, interpersonal space became intimate space out of safety and necessity.
She took a breath, trying to relax again. You’re closer to your family than ever before. You’re going to find them. Just keep your head.
What would Delmas do if she was found out? Franz wasn’t Franz— and his wife was here under false pretenses looking for him and the daughter he hadn’t registered at school.
The first building they passed, Delmas noted as the science classroom. Anthea stood still for a moment, imagining Franz with his papers tucked under his arm, trying to keep them dry in the rain. Running into the classroom and shaking the water from his hair and making some sarcastic comment.
Her smile fell slightly into a frown. What was he like here? Was he happy in this new life? Paranoid as she was now? M. Delmas had said he had been closed off— could she ask or would it be suspicious?
"Yes, our Science building is the top of our greatest, newest achievement. It was Franz who helped us get grants to fill the classrooms with lab equipment actually. I been debating with the Board to re-name it after him. But since he not officially dead, we can't name it after a living person. So for now it bears no name." Jean Pierre explained as they passed it.
He turn for a bit from her to look to the students. They scurried around to their classes, dodging the rain. The bell for afternoon lectures rang around hem as the last got in their rooms. Soon the courtyard was free from anyone. He thought he saw a glint of yellow hair in the woods. But it could be nothing or Jeremie and the others off to save the world again. He push the notion aside as they continue the walk.
"Your time at the Hospital must of kept you away from Franz often. He was quite a man and one of our best teachers. Always coming up with some insane project to engage the kids in Science. There is still a scorch mark on the roof from those bottle rockets. I can't help but wish he stayed and did not so randomly vanished like he did. The older teachers still look out for him as they commute to the school early in the morning." Jean Pierre said with a small sigh. His own mind filled with seeing Franz offer advice to a student and running to class. He really had a heart of gold for a single dad and all.
Something about this interview was unsettling and her embarrassment and slip-up had only set her more on edge. Room and a board along with pay. Such a strange job offer— she had put down an address on the resume. He should assume she already had a place to stay, right?
She already said that she lived close to this campus. Why would he offer to let he stay here? Did he not believe her? Was he trying to keep a closer eye on her?
Think on that later. Right now just stay calm, act normal. This was the normal world. Not everything was a mindgame or a trick. Some things simply were what they were.
She stood, shook the man’s hand and smiled. The worry was shoved in the back of her mind, compartmentalizing as always.
"Yes, yes I would appreciate that. Please keep me updated while you decide, okay?
"Ah, and we can work out other details later if I get hired."
Jean Pierre smiled one of his rare smiles that he found the perfect person for the job. Feeling her hands in his in the brief second reminded him what really grabbed her resume from him. Her connection to Franz. He had to dig deeper to know... know if she connected to the group that forced him to hide in that digital world of his.
"But of course. I have your phone and cell right here. I am having a dinner with them all on Friday to discuss the choices for the post. I'm sure by Saturday morning I will be able to give you the answer." He explained as he pushed his chair back from behind him.
"Yes, we can iron them out. I have to by law explain the post in question in full to people I interview so you know what is available and what your required on your end. That way you can't sue the school for negligence. All details can be worked out if indeed the board agrees." He gently headed to the door to hold it open to her. One glance out the window stopped the question of a tour in it's track.
"Here, let me at least walk you to our gate. I can explain out the few buildings we will pass along the way. Such a shame the rain is upon us so soon. Our park is quite beautiful this time of day usually." He grabbed a large, golfer sized umbrella that could fit two adults under it comfortably.
"It was…it was a long time ago. Don’t worry about it. Getting to work here will help a lot— that didn’t come out right. Sorry." I didn’t mean it in a manipulative way…just… never mind." And there went her confident demeanor.
te sure where to go from here. Part of her wanted to stay and talk. Another part wanted to already start exploring campus to look for clues— whatever ones might be left ten years after their vanishing. Another, smaller and saner part wanted to hole back up at her hotel room…
“I’m sure you have other interviews to get to…”
Jean Pierre looked over at what started as a great interview turn into a painful stab to a women's heart. He set the pen down with a sigh.
"To be full honest, your the last one I'm interviewing for the position. The job is more demanding then most think. The position is being the secretary to the teachers mainly. Handling their emails, phone calls, setting up office hours for our staff of thirty teachers. It also involves being the in between the students and teachers outside of their classes, like collecting late assignments to make sure they go to the right teacher. Should Madame Weber call out sick, then the candidate has to take over being the main secretary for the entire school. I can assure you the pay of thirty Euros an hour is also competitive with room for advancement and raises. Plus should you require room and board, We have a spare teacher dorm no one is using. Rent will be taken from your check, but it is mainly for the increase to the cafeteria who would cook your meals for you and all." Jean Pierre explained the job.
"If this sounds like a good fit for you.. I would like to put you on our short list for the position. Final approval has to be agreed by me and the school board.. But they tend to agree with me in judging people.Well?" Jean Pierre stood up and extended a hand towards her. He felt confidant he was making the right choice. A friend of Franz was a co-worker worthy to have by his side. Heavens forbid Jeremie and his friends fail to keep the world safe from that XANA thing.
Jean Pierre nodded, even if his mind was pulling up a million questions. If it was one thing Franz was not, it was a piano tutor for someone else besides Aelita. Between being a teacher and that secret project of his, when would the man have time? The Dean thought quick to change the subject, ready to go back to that point in a long way around.
"Oh, you have a daughter? I have one as well. Elizabeth brings me such great happiness in my life. Can I ask how your daughter is?" Jean Pierre asked, glancing a look at the photo he has of Elizabeth when she was young sitting on his shoulders.
She took a moment to think of what to say. She hadn’t thought of that, not yet anyway. A story that could explain her daughter’s absence without arousing suspicion. She figured she would at least have until after the interview to iron out all the details.
“She’s… There was a car accident. Quite a few years ago.” She sighed, reaching a hand to her face. Partly acting, partly recalling that day. It wasn’t a lie, not in a certain sense. The grey SUV had ripped her family from her. Kept her daughter from her.
She smiled, wiped her face and looked back up. “Elizabeth. What a pretty name. How old is she?”
"Oh... My condolences then. I did not want to bring up anything that painful during an interview." Jean Pierre offered up. He kept an eye on her as he reached for his tissue box to offer her some if need be. She was not crying..but she might.
"She's coming up to be about 14. She is enrolled here in the ninth grade. I"m sure if we hire you you will shortly see her. She enjoys getting to know the staff here." Jean Pierre remarked. He mentally chuckled at seeing Elizabeth trying to ask for a favor from Mme Lewis.
She smiled. Sarah had certainly done a good job fooling the man,if he was so enamoured of her just from the reference check.
"Franz and I have been good friends for a while. He was my daughter's piano tutor. We dropped out of touch a few years ago but he was always trying to get me to come work here. He really loved it here."

"Seven years." She smiled, taking a small breath and finally letting herself calm down. Now was the easy part, the simple lies she was good at.
"I filed the patient’s cases into their proper sections, did basic intake and assigned everyone to their caseworkers. Basic phone calls and message taking. Keeping everything up to code. As far as relevant skills— handling and rerouting phone calls and emails, my wpm is 65, and I’m very good at dealing with children."
"I left because I moved a few months ago and the distance was too much to let me keep working there. Kadic is much closer to home, and getting out of a hospital environment seems like it’s been a long time coming."
The grey hair man nodded as he jotted down some notes. He glanced up at her nervous state. Yet another worried applicant, trying to remain calm in the face of a future boss. A look Jean Pierre has become used to seeing from hopefuls.
"I see, that does match up what your reference remarked to me when I called. There is no reason to be nervous Madame Lewis. Honestly, your one of the top applicants I gotten for this new post. This interview is mainly to see if your personality would work well in this role and if your the right fit" Jean Pierre remarked towards her. He brushed his beard in thought, trying to piece the words in his mouth.
"I noticed you mentioned a former teacher her, Monsieur Franz Hopper, as a referral. I can't help but be curious how you know him? Franz had always been quite guarded about his past." He asked, setting the pen down next to the pad of paper.
“Do not train a child to learn by force or harshness; but direct them to it by what amuses their minds, so that you may be better able to discover with accuracy the peculiar bent of the genius of each.”

"Tell me again how you happen to miss half your classes today Miss Ishiyama?" The stern principal asked, folding his arms on his desk. He waited for her reply with a glare of his eyes.

She nestled her gun in the bottom of her purse, clicking the safety on as she stood up.
The room itself was large, mostly empty. A man hunched over the desk, studying the papers in front of him. He looked up as she entered.
"Mme Lewis. Thank you for meeting with me, M. Delmas. This really is a lovely campus." She shook his hand and sat down, setting her purse carefully next to her chair.
She glanced over at the chair next to her. She could almost imagine “Franz” sitting there, nervously working his way through the very same interview. This is where it had all began for him, the new life he had created and lived in for so long.
It was, in a way, hopeful. Comforting.
Jean Pierre straighten his back as he stood to shake her hands. He could feel calluses in that brief span in her hand. Clearly Madame Lewis is used to working hard. He expected nothing less from any of his staff. He sat down, pressing his vest down so as to stop it from riding up as he sat.
Carefully, so as not to alert her, he look over her looks. Brown hair, tied neatly back. A basic suit for women that showed her strong, yet delicate form. Her purse, laying carefully on her lap, ready to use as a weapon if he refuses to hire her. He doubted she would do such a thing...but a friend of Franz who might know what he has done ought to know how to defend herself. He has learn a bit from watching Jim Morales teach the students that karate from the Philippines, just as a precaution.
"Yes, Kadic Academy has quite the charm, grace and splendor for being one of Paris' top private Junior High Schools. Our gardener takes great joy and pride in keeping the grounds in this pleasant state. Perhaps I can give you a proper tour of the campus, if this goes well." Jean Pierre commented towards her. He gently laid her resume on the top of his papers. He pulled a small pad of paper and a pen from a drawer to take notes with.
"Now then, to the matter at hand. I shall ask you some questions about your previous employment to get a feel to what you know and see if you may fit here. Your last job was at Dekkard Hospital as a receptionist for.. five years was it? What were some of your responsibilities there and why have you left there?" A pen held at the ready to take notes as he look at her. His eyes narrowed a bit to look at her from behind his glasses.

Her nerves were still high-- more from the stupidity of her decision than from the interview she was waiting on.
A woman who doesn’t exist anymore has a near-null chance of a [legal] job. After about a week she was nearly out of funds and had decided to risk getting recaptured.
And so she had applied at Kadic Academy for the new receptionist position. Once upon a time, “Franz Hopper” had worked here— and she had no misgivings using his name as a recommendation. [of course half of that name was her own, she mused]
To anyone walking by, there was nothing out of the ordinary. A drab-looking woman with brown hair and a suit, a purse held carefully in her lap. Patricia Lewis: close friend of Franz Hopper, previously worked as a receptionist at Dekkard Hospital.
But a closer look would betray the facade: shifting green eyes casting nervous glances out the window. a hand resting half-inside her purse [holding onto her gun], a stiff and reserved posture— more defensive than was necessary for being worried about not getting a job.
Yes, applying to her husband’s former workplace was incredibly, incredibly stupid. She was already looking for the blur of blonde and black out the rain-streaked window: Shane, stalking his way to the principal’s office, ready to take her back by force.
But she really had nowhere else to go. Hell, she had only gotten the interview by using her husband’s pseudonym. And she was hoping maybe Shane would assume she was smarter than this and would ignore the school entirely purely because of how obvious and reckless it was.
Plus, she might be able to find out more about where her family had gone. She would pick up on clues that had left behind that EMPIRE wouldn’t have been able to notice.
Things that they would never notice because they didn’t know her family.
"You can go in now...Mr. Delmas is ready to see you." The secretary at the desk said as she motioned to the door next to her. She was too busy typing up emails to the staff and parents of the changes Kadic was going through.
Inside his office, Jean Pierre sighed. He removed his glasses and rubbed his eyes. How he convinced himself to make this new position was beyond him. There really was no need to add on another receptionist when his own secretary could handle it. But an afternoon when she had to leave was the swift kick in the butt he needed for the job.
He placed the worn glasses back on and glanced at the application of the latest interviewer in the waiting room. His eyebrow arched at the name. Patricia Lewis...Friend of Franz Hopper. How strange for her to have a recommendation for a man he knew was gone... Could she know the truth behind his disappearance? Don't jump to conclusions... Just hear her out. All her other references and jobs on her resume checked out. Just need to hear her take on things.
He grunted, laying the papers on his desk. He brushed a crumb from his earlier lunch off his sweater vest and waited for her to enter the room. Something nagging at him that this would be an interesting interview, even more so then Franz's so long ago.
