fleeting connections in a lonely world. once again reminded of why sofia coppola is one of my favorite artists ever.
lowkey might be a hot take on the tumblr side but i think The Odyssey is a good movie. now is it an accurate adaptation? no. but i don’t think Nolan really intended that. i think so many people are seeing this in the context of it being “Homer’s Odyssey” rather than it being “Nolan’s Odyssey.” this site feels like it undervalues film in a lot of frustrating ways and i feel like this film is a showcase of that. The Odyssey feels like its tackling similar ideas that Nolan was tackling with Oppenheimer, questioning the ideas of legacy and culture. its a continuation of his investigation of his place in culture, how his filmography has contributed to almost a “death of film” as well as a rise in incel and right wing cultures. the idea of both of these subjects can be traced back to The Dark Knight trilogy. maybe this could be considered “self-important” of Nolan but i’d argue he’s probably one of the most important and influential modern filmmakers. many filmmakers and aspiring filmmakers cite him as an inspiration, he’s influenced the idea of a modern film canon, his films are considered modern classics, over half of his filmography is in the Letterboxd top 500 as well as the IMDB top 250. i may not take either of these lists very seriously since i don’t consider whiplash, puss in boots, aliens, joker, across the spider-verse, or no way home some of the best films of all time. sorry spider-man fans but at least i still think into the spider-verse is up there. still, i think it says something that over half of one persons filmography is so widely beloved and praised. people think Nolan sees Odysseus as an “honorable warrior” but to me, Nolan sees Odysseus as almost pathetic, similar to Oppenheimer in a lot of ways. “great men” who’ve caused great destruction and feel guilt over it.
hell, the final shots of both films could be easily compared. the world burning in Oppenheimer compared to the horse burning in Odyssey. both shots show how both men destroyed the world. while Oppenheimer may not have “set the world on fire” but he ushered in a new era where its a constant threat, and may well be the end of humanity. the horse burning shows how Odysseus’ sin lives on. his trojan horse caused the downfall of troy, an outpouring of rage and violence that destroyed so many innocent people. the setup of the fall of troy is disgusting, men pissing and shitting all over themselves, two of them drowning, another man lied to and murdered in cold blood. Odysseus isn’t an “honorable warrior.” he still creates a trick. throughout the rest of the story he’s shown to be arrogant between attacking the cyclops and needing to hear the sirens call.
also thinking about this one post i saw making fun of him for not filming a rainbow. first of all, tom holland is the one who called it cartoonish in that interview so get over yourselves for saying he didn’t film it for not being “gritty.” but also saying it could’ve been an “easy symbol of hope” as he returns home. if you watch the movie, it’s shown to be that maybe he shouldn’t be hopeful! he’s filled with regrets of the horrors he’s committed, his home is in fact completely falling apart! where is this “hope”? there isn’t even hope in the ending, the final shot implying that war will keep going, beyond odysseus, many troys will fall, many outpourings of rage and violence will keep happening. the horse will burn forever!
of course there are also the weird racist chuds who aren’t on this site much but i will say this: the point of these big star american castings is nolan trying to get american audiences to understand this fucking plays about us. right now The Odyssey is a film about America in a lot of ways. people actively refuse to engage with this idea that an older story can be used to reflect a modern society specifically for this film. i mean look how Greta Gerwig updated Little Women to partially be about how women are pushed out of artistic control over their art! i don’t see people complaining about historical accuracy, nor how it’s inaccurate in one way or another. hell, the amount of romance films based off of Shakespeare which are updated to be in the films contemporary time, or how Clueless was based on Emma. these are widely known and accepted ideals, so it’s just frustrating that now it’s suddenly a problem.
my thing here is i’m not even a huge Nolan fan. he’s not one of my favorite directors ever, i think he has a long way to go to write better characters, especially with women and people of color. what i’m doing here is essentially a frustrated rant that probably shouldn’t be taken super seriously, this has just been a built up frustration about how film is always talked about as this “lesser medium” and i feel like Nolan’s Odyssey is an encapsulation of this, especially on this site. people refuse to engage with the film and i’m half convinced a lot of the people who talk about the movie haven’t even seen it, simply agreeing with what one translator said. Emily Wilson’s word should probably be taken way more seriously than some random internet cinephile tgirl, but at the same time, should kubrick hate himself because stephen king hated the shining? should anyone behind mary poppins hate themselves because p.l. travers hated it? anyone behind willy wonka? mary harron for american psycho? i, as well as many others, love these films. maybe the author hates them, but acting like because thats true that means the film is instantly trash is frankly ridiculous and ignorant. films have their own merits to be measured on outside of accuracy. now if thats how you personally measure film, fine whatever y’know, it’s art and everyone enjoys art differently. i just don’t think its a very enriching way to talk about art.
i lowkey sometimes think about if diablo cody wrote a sequel to juno, like juno in the modern day with elliot page and juno transitioned and its about his kid trying to meet their now father (not like the kid knows right away i guess lol.) i guess it’s almost like a reverse pedro almodovar’s all about my mother? idk this is an idea i think about sometimes and sometimes wish it would happen, but it’s also so dumb why would it be made lmao.
BTW if you call yourself a transfeminist you HAVE to get educated on racial intersectionality. It is not optional. The fact that the transfeminist movement is largely on Tumblr, a site that continues to delete every single Black user it possibly can, has made it so that this site is overrun with white transfems who fall into the exact same trap as the tme transmisogynists we speak out on.
NEVER let yourself think that you are immune to bigotry. NEVER. Just because the movement as a whole pledges racial justice, doesn't mean that you aren't actively harming Black people, both in our community and outside of it.
sometimes i think “i hate being a trans woman” but then i realize i really dont, i like it, i’ve been trained to hate the idea of it because so many people hate trans women.
it’s similar to how i feel about myself tbh. i think “i hate myself” but then i realize i don’t actually hate myself, i kinda like myself to be honest. i’ve been trained to hate myself. so many people in my life tried gaining power over me in life by convincing me that i hate myself, because it made it so much easier to see them as some sort of “godly” figure above me, who was gracious enough to give me a small ounce of attention, made it easier for me to be controlled and manipulated.
i’ve been setup my whole life to hate someone thats not really that hateable. i try to be kind, i think i’m pretty creative and fun, i have funny moments, i care about people. it feels weird listing positive things about myself because my brain keeps going “this is narcissistic” but at the same time i realize its that part of my brain that wants to hate myself, that wants to stay quiet and shrunk down. its weird.
im not saying there arent bad qualities about me, i can be pretty depressing, i say stuff without thinking, i tend to not be clear with my emotions or sometimes bottle them up and blow up without a clear reason, i tend to have an anger problem, i vent and feel guilty and over apologize a lot. but even when i do fuck up i try making up for it somehow.
i like being trans. i like myself. i’d like to hang out with myself to be honest. i don’t know, this has just been something i’ve been thinking about lately.
my recent four watched films is so interesting.
Dressed in Blue: a documentary filmed in 1980s Spain about the lives of six trans women framed around them having a luncheon. You get small glimpses into these womens lives as they navigate sex work, transitioning, family, friends, performing, the law, etc. It covers a lot of topics and it’s such a beautiful, beautiful film. Watching women my age transition, and while do experience a lot of pain, be free in a lot of ways made me cry so hard. I need to be able to transition so badly.
The Crippled Masters: a martial arts film that follows two men who have their limbs cut off by an evil master, one his arms, the other his legs. They get trained by a new master and are tasked to steal the eight jade horses, a series of small statues that unlock the secrets of kung-fu, which they will use in service to their ultimate goal, revenge against their evil master. This film is very odd. Fun, yet kinda boring. I find it so cool that they main actors actually have disabilities and are amazing at kung-fu in real life. At the same time though, this movie can be considered exploitative of these actors disabilities. I’m not going to make a definitive statement seeing that I’m not disabled and I’d like to hear more disabled people’s perspective on this film. I find it funny that the only reason this movie is known at all is because John Waters loves it. Beyond that, I don’t think this movie would be very well known. It’s a very well-made movie, great cinematography and editing, it’s so fast paced and has some great shots, but my god the writing is just horrid. The actors are so hammy it makes it work in some ways but it’s sooooo boring. I don’t wanna say that but it’s crazy when I want a 90 minute movie to be shorter. At least it has some really fun stuff in it.
Jackass 2.5: I don’t know how controversial it is to say, but I do know it is kind of a hot take amongst the Jackass fandom. I didn’t really like Jackass 2 at all. I understand there’s some context I missed for it and I understand it’s kind of a document of the emotions America was feeling at that point but I don’t know, it just felt too miserable and mean for my taste. And despite the subversion of the final skit in the last movie, it still felt weird seeing a guy “dress like a terrorist” and I think they also darkened his skin? Don’t quote me on the 2nd part it just looked like it. So, Jackass 2.5: it was okay. I liked it more than Jackass 2. If I consider Jackass 2 to be the most “evil” and mean of the franchise, I consider 2.5 as the most disgusting of the franchise. There were so many times I was close to vomiting, it was so gross throughout. Nothing bad about that necessarily but y’know, not my favorite. I think Jackass as a franchise just wasn’t ever going to be one I’m really into, it’s fun but yeah, I’m not the biggest person for gross stuff lol. I’m glad it’s a thing though, I like the people involved and it has some really funny stuff.
Charade: my favorite film of this bunch. A comedic, romantic thriller that follows a woman, who after the death of her husband, is followed by 3 men in search of his money, and it seems the only man she can trust is a man she met on vacation. This movie is so fun and so, so energetic. The camera is kinetic, the colors pop, the editing is thrilling. There’s many laughs, gasps, and swoons to be had. This movie is so thrilling, and so, so sexy. So many points where I was enthralled in the suspence as well as the relationship developing between Audrey Hepburn and Cary Grant. Their chemistry was through the roof, genuinely some of the best chemistry I’ve ever seen captured on film. Their performances alone are great but put them together and it’s like watching Jesus himself being resurrected. And my god, Audrey Hepburn’s performance is just brilliant. She’s almost effortlessly charming and so enthralling, I think this is some of the best eye acting I’ve ever seen. Someone in the movie mentions how she bats her eyes, and I can definitely say she bats them hard. I’m thinking about this particular scene towards the end where you can see her through a small opening in a stage, and she gives this look of terror that’s so convincing, like yeah, Audrey is that girl, y’know. She’s particularly amazing in this movie that stands out a lot. What a great film, so many twists throughout. You know those memes where it’s someone showing their friend a movie and they guess the plot in 5 minutes? I feel like you could show this movie to that kind of person and maybe they’d guess some stuff but I don’t think they could guess the entire plot. So clever.
and those are my recent four watches, all around fun time! I love movies!
will forever hate caitlyn jenner (and the entire kardashian bloodline) but jesus christ seeing how cis people talk about her and kris on tiktok makes me sick because they apply it to trans women and relationships in general.
“this is worse than cheating btw”
“this has to be worse than divorce”
“this is my worst nightmare”
“she didn’t deserve that”
it’s like treating a trans woman as some sort of criminal or immoral monster for finally just being able to be herself. i understand there’s a heartbreak involved in this idea of discovering your partner is trans but that doesn’t mean the trans partner gets to be dehumanized or invalidated. it makes me so irrationally angry thinking about this subject and seeing how these people talk about trans women, genuine monsters who’d rather someone suffer and kill themselves than live a free life or else they’ll be sad. monstrous in my eyes.
thinking about the relationship between these four shots. the comparison between malcolm and his father, yet the contrast between jesus and elijah. jesus, while yes looming over malcolms father, takes a smaller role in his life and decision making, while elijah looms over malcolm wholeheartedly. elijah is depicted as this huge all seeing figure with his eyes on malcolm, taking up so much space in the shot because of how much elijah takes up of malcolms life, hes a gigantic, epic, godly figure at this point. then you see when malcolm confronts elijah, they’re in separate shots, implying a split between them as opposed to them being on the same side, facing the same direction in the stage shot, and elijah, while the camera is looking up at him implying he has power, still looks small. like hes a pathetic man with power. the lighting creates horizontal bars across elijah evoking imagery of old noir movies, these stripes representing trickery and deceit, implying elijah has something to hide. then you look at malcolms, the camera is looking down at him implying hes less than elijah, yet he looks bigger, showing how much more powerful malcolm really is than elijah, and the lighting is focused on his eyes. he’s surrounded by darkness except for this spotlight on him, and this specific light in his eyes, showing that hes finally becoming clear, hes confronting elijah and he’s finally seeing the truth of elijah. his eyes are in the light and the light is truth. he can finally see, and he can see that hes surrounded by darkness, trickery, and lies. spike lee is just that fucking guy, my god.
being a trans fem fan of tadc sucks because you see how people talk about a trans character and because of how people view fictional characters and conflate them with real life you kinda realize what they think about trans women irl Imao
recent 4 films of doom and despair
i love the art ive been experiencing lately
film twitter is one of the worst places ever to be a cinephile oh my god. on one side of the spectrum there are people who are mad if you like any new movie more than an old movie at all. “you like obsession more than pulse? EAT SHIT AND DIE” “you like celine song more than eric rohmer? WATCH MORE MOVIES” “you like obsession more than citizen kane? RAAAGHWHFJEBDJWHDJW” and like jesus christ. first of all, comparing citizen kane and obsession is just fucking weird, theyre going for different ideas, just like, what???? and you know what, i do like obsession more! look, i’ve seen citizen kane 3 times. 3 separate times, once even in theaters!!!! and its a fine movie! its not bad, not really something i love either! i understand how it revolutionized film but to be honest, i cant really find anything i love about it! the cinematographys fine, the editings mostly fine (fuck that bird), the performances are fine, the dialogues fine, the story is fine, genuinely its fine! and honestly, i feel like ive somehow watched it 3 more times than the people who go on this tirade about how “its citizen kane” because i never see people genuinely explain why they love it, they only use its reputation to hate on people liking movies, its dumb its genuinely so dumb! youre not a cinephile, you dont love movies, you just love coming off as an intellectual and calling people stupid! open your mind to the beauty of cinema!!!!! (btw i think i love pulse and obsession pretty equally its just an example i came across on twitter lol)
AND ON THE OTHER END OF THE SPECTRUM: the people who see like, one movie a year in theaters, only ever see new movies, think liking old movies is weird, liking foreign movies are pretentious, etc etc etc. to be honest: i think these people are barely worth engaging with. i cant talk about the beauty of film and cinema with them, how new cinema is in constant conversation with old cinema, and how cool different movies are! you only watch like marvel movies and maybe like 3 at most popular movies a year. and look if this is your speed, fine whatever thats fine, but the least you can do is not trash on people for liking older and foreign movies!!! i’ll see memes like “filmbros (not the correct use of that btw get ur shit right) when you say your favorite movie is iron man and not a lost 1958 black and white russian film about a blade of grass growing in the middle of sidewalk and the people around it” as if that 2nd film doesn’t sound kinda awesome??? like are you not intellectually curious about russian cinema? black and white cinema? slow cinema? why do you need to hate this idea of a film? again, open your heart and mind to the beauty of cinema!!!
both sides of this same coin have a similar problem: refusing to engage with cinema as a whole. engaging with either of these people sucks because on one side you’ll only hear about how curry barker is so much worse than kiyoshi kurosawa or how his references are “too new” (genuinely a tweet i saw, mad that he was partly inspired by get out and hereditary like WHAT???) or how a bad brian de palma movie is better because its older. on the other side, you can never talk about how cool it is that obsession pays homage to kiyoshi kurosawa’s pulse, how the set design of backrooms could be in conversation with films like the shining, or how backrooms is partially inspired by twin peaks! like people know this stuff exists but just dont want to see these connections and how cool that is!!! there’s just so much to talk about!!
neither side wants to engage with the mess that is cinema. how every film is in conversation with one another, the lineage of cinema and what films inspired one another, and how cool that is. it either remains unseen or is judged. the popular things on film twitter is never the in between, where you can appreciate older and newer cinema, and see the throughlines and dna of cinema without judgement. its tiring. i’d like to think i could join a community of people who just love movies and want to actually talk about movies, but there is not that community, its just a community of fake intellectuals and judgemental losers.
sorry for this rambling mess, i’m tired and my brain is barely coherent and i was just frustrated and wanted to word vomit about this topic. i lob da mobies.
being a trans woman means knowing that everybody hates you, or sees you as some sort of sexual object, or on the rare occasion neither of those things are true it’s probably a short connection. being a trans woman means knowing your time is limited and never knowing if you’ll grow to be a great willow tree or be cut down too early. being a trans woman means looking around you and seeing another trans woman get murdered or die by suicide and wondering if you’re next. being a trans woman means you can never fuck up because if you fuck up once you’re dead. being a trans woman means people, including the ones in your community will say horrible, nasty things about your character. they will wrong you and say its your fault. the same pattern over and over.
being a trans woman means being lost in the world, out of place, out of time, you’re wandering in the space between reality and unreality, always wondering when you’ll stop feeling like a translucent being that’s always stared at. you’re not sure if you exist outside of being scrutinized to death.
yet, i wouldnt trade it for anything in the world. i didnt choose to be trans. i chose to keep going. i choose to suffer because despite that suffering, i’m alive, and i know that happiness exists. i’ve felt it. i will feel it. i didn’t choose to be trans, but i chose to transition.
happy pride month. fuck you to the people who’ve wronged me, i refuse to let you rule my brain and my narrative, assholes.
i’m begging for a tadc blu-ray boxset PLEASE my physical collection is in need
i wore my “I miss David Lynch” t-shirt to the TADC finale screening. i think Gooseworx would’ve approved if she knew.
KILL MEEEEEEE
