Youâve been trying to remember, but itâs all a blur.
There was the station. The fight with Dean, and then the other thing with Dean, and the escape that ended with you cornered in the file room. The world had gone black, and then there had been dulled colors. Like looking at something through a black veil, every sound muffled, even your memory of touches being like you were covered in thick layers.
Sometimes there had been flashes. Brief hits of light, where everything had been too loud, too bright. You remember glass, delicate and thin and tired of just looking pretty, begging for you to just let it be a weapons. There had been the water under your feet, sick of being confined to such a small pond, wanting to float up into the air and see the world.
The night, where you can remember flashes of Gold and something calling you, then a pure, white-hot fear that had been yours and yours alone. Youâd screamed for it, and the world had screamed back, and then it had all been quiet.
Until Dean pulled you out. And youâd been swaying on your feet, standing somewhere so familiar, yet completely foreign. Thatâs still a little hazy, too. Your brain hadnât stopped feeling like radio static until somewhere on the road, and you hadnât felt like your own until Dean had touched you.
That had been nice.
Nice in the sense that it felt like heaven. It always felt like heaven. It was Dean, and his deep voice guiding you as his hands mapped your body. It had been nice with how youâd been set on fire and worshipped in soft touches. Nice how the pressure between your legs had felt like a summer fountain, when heâd relieved it over and over again. Nice to be under Deanâs gaze, his Gold stained all over your body, and almost believe him when he said that you were something beautiful. It had felt good. Really good. Youâre not sure if all sex feels that good, or if itâs just your Dean, but youâre never going to trade him for the Universe, so it doesnât matter. Sex with Dean is really good. Youâd put it in the top five things of all time.
But it had also been nice to be grounded. To have his every touch moves you a little further into yourself, guiding you back together in a way youâd never even been able to do yourself. His kisses had helped you breathe, his low commands slowing your thoughts until it was just a chant of his name, and youâd been certain where you were. If youâd been wandering electricity, still charged from the storm and chaos of those weeks, Dean had been your lighting rod.
Youâd giggled when you thought of that, on a hunt a few nights ago. Dean had given you an amused, curious look, and youâd just shaken your head.Â
âWhatâre you thinking, sweetheart?â
âNothing.â Youâd smiled at him, twisting a ring on your finger. âDonât worry about it.â
Heâd scanned over your face, frowning slightly, but let it go. Kissed your brow and let it go.
Youâd snuggled closer into his side, hiding your dumb smile in his chest. Heâd cradled the back of your head with a sigh, and youâd wrapped your arms around his torso.
âItâs nothing bad.â Youâd mumbled into his shirt, and heâd grunted.
âAlright.â
ââS a sex thing.â
Dean had coughed, tensing around you. âYeah? What kinda sex thing.â
Youâd giggled. âRod.â
âRod.â Heâd echoed, petting the back of your head. âHow late were you and Jo up last night?â
âLate. Youâre my rod.â
Dean had made a sound like he was choking on the air. âIâm your what-â
âMy rod.â Youâd rolled to the side, yawning as you pawed at his shirt. âDean.â
âIâm here-â
âYouâre my rod-â
âYeah, I heard you the first time-â
âItâs an innuendo.â Youâd told him, and he was too far away.
Youâd wiggled upright, fully into his lap. Pressed your brow against his, hands fisted in his shirt, a wide smile on your face as he blinked at you.
âHi.â Youâd whispered, and his lips had twitched.
âHi, Princess.â Heâd murmured. âYouâre getting loopy.â
âNo. Iâm in a perfect line.â
Dean had snorted. âAlright, giggles. Câmon. Bedtime.â
Youâd thought about protesting, but then heâd kissed your nose and everything became soft, pastel colors. Youâd buried your face in the crook of Deanâs neck, and let him carry you into bed. Sam had been out drinking, and the motel mattress had been a little lumpy, but Dean had been letting you use him like a sleeping back. Your body flopped over his, his arms around you like a second blanket as you knocked right out, bathed and content in his Gold.
Maybe you had been up too late with Jo, the night before you left. And youâd been doing most of the case yourself, no matter how Sam and Dean tried to stop you.
They were helpful. But Samâs head hadnât gotten betterâhe needed a lot of breaks, and youâre getting worried about how pale he is all the timeâand Dean is the love of your life and a genius, but incredibly useless when he spends all his time worrying about your wellbeing.
After youâd gotten home, youâd thought he might handcuff you together. When you were home, heâd linger outside the bathroom door like a guard dog until you rolled your eyes, and told him to just come inside.
âI, uh- You donât have to-â
âYouâve seen it all, Winchester.â Youâd flushed, a little less command in your voice that you could usually muster. âItâs fine.â
Heâd slowly pushed open the door. Slid inside with a tiny smile, his hand landing on the top of your head and patting it before he took a pace back.
âYou look nice.â
âNo, I donât.â
Heâd frowned. âYeah, you do-â
âIâm taking a shit.â
Dean had laughed. âAnd itâs gonna be the prettiest shit in the world.â
Youâd flushed and swiped at his knees, and heâd just grinned down at you. It had calmed him down a lot, and at least stopped the shifting of his shadow under the door. But he also seemed to be developing a muscle memory for it. On that same hunt, heâd tried to follow you into the womenâs bathroom five times, and succeed once when you hadnât had time to fight him about it. Youâd glared at him from the toilet. Heâd grinned.
You donât know how heâs not sick of you yet.
Dean hasnât let you out of his sight since you got home. Not for more than ten minutes, save for girlâs night with Jo, and Sam had almost dragged him out by his collar. Youâd been sick of yourself the moment you developed a consciousness, and had to be alone with that bitch for maybe a day, tops. Youâre annoying, and loud, and bossy and mean and dramatic and a crybaby and rude and emotional and Dean somehow seems to enjoy all of it. He even seems to know when your thoughts are running away from youâhissing that maybe heâd be better without you, that itâs only a matter of time before he gets bored and moves onto someone easierâand kisses them gently away, distracting you until youâre floating instead of drowning in yourself.
Heâs too perfect. You think you could make the world in his name, and still never deserve him. But youâve also learned not to question him about these things. He wants you. Cares about you. Needs you. He wouldnât have bothered to track you down, if he didnât.
Neither of you have brought up the fight since you got home. For once it doesnât seem to be out of fearâthis stupid Leviathan things doesnât get to be what breaks you, not after everything elseâbut you still arenât in a hurry. Everything is in this suspended space where itâs still chaotic, but youâve got it contained. The mess is confined, and you know where everything is. Samâs getting worse, but heâs not about to die. Cas is still out of his mind, but itâs not hurting anyone. You and Bobby have gotten the God Reject cleanup on a system, and itâs a bit of a mess that might take years to finishâthere are a lot of things out there, Sam thinks youâve barely scratched the surface and youâre inclined to agreeâbut at least thereâs a system.
Eileenâs been checking in. Rowenaâs out doing Rowena thingsâprobably just whatever she wantsâbut she sends you updates and helps when you ask. You havenât found Balthazar to run the baby monsters yet, but you found another nest and you warded it well. Heavenâs still on lockdown. Eveâs still underground.
The Leviathans are out thereâthere had been traces of them at that nest, and even if you hadnât seen them, youâd sure as fuck felt themâbut Sam and Dean are legally dead again. Frank has been keeping in touch, looking into your familyâs transactions and meetings on Deanâs request. And maybe you told him that they were a part of a lizard cult that secretly ran the world, but it made the old man happy, and Dean had a lot of fun selling the lie.
Everything else has just been hunts. The nest, a White Stag that Dean had gotten the horn of, a bunch of Yeerks that had been trying to take over a town in Arizona. Compared to the mess of the past year, itâs almost felt like a vacation.
Youâre lying flat on your back, the baby Lion on your chest, fiddling with Deanâs amulet around your neck. Your head and back had been hurting, and youâd made the mistake of telling Dean. Heâd bundled you up like a baby and carried you up to your room without another question. Youâd fought him about it, but less than you could. If you meant it, you couldâve wriggled away and demanded he treat you normally.
But you didnât want him to treat you normally.
Youâll never tell himâheâd abuse the powerâbut itâs nice. To get all of Deanâs attention, to be coddled like youâre really something important, instead of a feral beast.
Itâs hateful and itchy to just sit here and do nothing, when you could be tracking the Leviathans or going on a hunt. It would be unforgivable to ask Dean to pamper you after everything heâs given you. After you forgot him, and no matter how many times youâve apologized and heâs told you that it wasnât your fault, you still feel like youâre made of ashes and he should just toss you into the wind.
You forgot him. You forgot Dean, youâd looked at him and let them tell you he was no one, and youâd dreamed about him and heâd been every moment of clarity, but that wasnât enough. You shouldâve been stronger. If youâd been stronger, you wouldnât have forgotten, and he wouldnât have had to save you, and whatâs the fucking point of having so much power if you can just forget Dean.
What if God makes you forget him. What if he grabs you and doesnât even bother to try and make you move on. What if he wipes Dean from your head, and youâre forced to become drifting electricity again. No Dean to ground you, just a hungry, lonely hurricane that wants someone to wrap Her up, but canât recognize the only arms that know how.
Deanâs amulet digs into your palm, and you take a deep, long breath.
They hadnât been able to take all of him. Itâs the only other thing you remember.
How theyâd tried to get it off of you, and they couldnât. Thereâs a blurry snapshots of screams and shouts of pain. A tugging on your throat and a prick on the back of your neck, then more shouts. Something had stung across your face, and it had hurt, but hadnât done anything but make you cry.
Youâd gotten to keep the amulet, and the ring. Gotten to keep parts of Dean.
And heâd forgiven you, even if youâd never, ever deserved it.
You hear the shower turn off, and crane you neck up to check if heâs already back. The Lion shifts on your chest, looking disgruntled that her pets had been interrupted, and you quickly scratch her ears again. Indyâs somewhere downstairs, bothering Sam for scraps of his dinner. The Lion is still too nervous to come out for Dean sometimes. Youâre already preparing to grab her before she runs off, when he gets back.
Youâre pretty sure sheâs a girl. When you told Dean, heâd just said whatever you think, baby, which hadnât been that helpful.
She bumps your hand again, and you run your thumb down her little nose. She seems to like it as much as you do, when Dean does it for you. Her purr is tiny, but soothing as it rumbles on your chest.
You want to keep her, even when you find Balthazar. Youâre trying to wait for the perfect time to ask Dean, so he wonât say no. Itâs not right now, though. When heâs already spoiling you, and youâre letting him, like some selfish, useless, brat.
But it doesnât count when Dean makes you let him. Just like youâre not indulging or taking anything from him when he tells you that sex is going to happen. You can kiss and touch Dean all you want if he goes first. It doesnât count. Just like you can let it show on your face that you love him when heâs fucking it out of you, just as long as you donât say it aloud.
So you can be swaddled and held in bed, if Deanâs insisting on it. If you told him no, it would be rude. He does so much and asks for so little. It would be a crime to ask him to do this. But heâs the one who grabbed your laptop out of your hands and demanded you go lie in bed and wait for him. So itâs fine.
There are still things to do. Work thatâs your responsibility to finish, and you could be helping Sam with his issues, and Claire might have homework, and if Indy doesnât get her scraps she might try to break into the pantry again-
âDe?â You call. âDid you feed Indy?â
âYeah.â He answers immediately. ââBout an hour ago, I think.â
âAnd did she eat it-â
âShe always eats it.â He pokes his head out the door, wet hair stuck to his brow, broad shoulders bare and still shining with water. âThink sheâs part goat or something. Gonna start feeding her scrap from the yard, see if we can save some money.â
You frown. âDean-â
âKidding.â He grins at you, eyes raking quickly over your body. You flush, trying to squirm away from the intensity of his gaze. âYou look comfortable, sweetheart.â
You grunt, turning your face into the pillows, and he chuckles softly. Itâs not fair when he does that. Puts you somewhere he can just see you, then looks at you like youâre every temptation heâs ever had, rolled into something soft heâd like to drink up. It makes you all tingly and pliable. Your core aches and you canât even touch yourself to relieve it, because youâve got a cat on your chest and you donât even know how.
You donât know how to do most of this. How to be pampered, how to ask for sex, how to figure out what you like as Dean keeps telling you to. You donât even know how to feel this happy. Sometimes you wake up in the morning, drenched in sweat from a strange nightmare, and you think itâs all gone.
Dean always brings you back down after. He holds you and rocks you back and forth, pushing your head against his chest and rubbing your spine until youâre breathing without any reminders. You think heâs under the impression theyâre just normal nightmares. The same kind he gets, that only wake you up when theyâre so bad he starts to thrash and shout for you and Sam. When those happen, you let him wrap around you and bury his face in your breasts, sobbing and quiet until he knocks himself back out with exhaustion.
Those donât happen often. There was one a few nights ago, but you didnât ask any questions about the nightmare itself. Neither of you ever do. You have an idea of what heâs dreaming of anyway, and itâs nothing you need to hear aloud. You think he believes the same of you. And that used to be a good policy. You didnât need to tell Deanâdidnât know how to tell himâthat when youâd wake up screaming for him it was because God had taken him, and you hadnât been able to find him anywhere, and you still hadnât really been able to breathe until you could touch his Gold and know it was real.
But these nightmares have been different. Clearer, more coherent. The normal ones were fractured and made of long halls and tangled webs of everything you fear.
This feels more like looking through glass at an exhibit. Itâs not right there, but itâs real.
The dead world you saw in the oracle cave. The rivers made of muddy tar and boiled skin, the ground scorched and everything reeking of death. Feeling like death. Even the air like a toxin when youâd try to breathe, and that high, clean castle up on the hill tainted in thick smog.
Dean hasnât asked about it. Youâre still trying to figure out how youâd tell him. But you will tell him. You said no more secrets, and maybe it will help you win the Leviathan argument.
Youâre not sure how. Thatâs part of the figuring it out thing.
Warm, careful fingers run through your hair, slowly turning your head to the side. You let Dean guide your gaze up, and find him smiling down at you with soft eyes. His hair is damp and spiky now, and heâs still not wearing a shirt. Which isnât fair. He looks like a statue above you, carved from marble to echo perfection. Your breath catches at just the sight of him, and he raises his brows.
âHey, pretty girl.â
You swallow, suddenly salivating. âHi.â
âYou didnât touch the chocolate I brought you.â
âCat.â
âAh.â He glances down, her little head tucked into your chest as she tries to hide from him. âShe gonna let me sit down, or try to bite me again.â
You roll your eyes. âShe didnât try to bite you-â
âShe showed teeth-â
âShe was hissing. Itâs a warning.â
âYeah, a warning she wants to bite me.â
âShut up.â You swat at him, and he laughs, catching your hand and kissing your knuckles.
âBossy.â He squeezes you three times. âScoot.â
You start to wiggle to the side, but Dean seems to decide thatâs simply too much work to make you do, and suddenly youâre being picked up and dragged into his lap. The kitten starts up and scrambles away, her poofy, striped tail vanishing back under the dresser within a second.
âDean.â You hit his arm, leaning back with a glare.
He shrugs, at least looking a little guilty. âSorry. Thought you had a good hold on her, didnât think sheâd be so slippery.â
âI couldâve held on. I didnât want to hurt her.â You grumble, sinking down into the mattress. Your back curled against Deanâs stomach, your head near the center of his chest. He taps your chin lightly, and you turn away.
âCome on, baby.â He mumbles, almost sounding like heâs pouting. âSheâll come back out.â
You know she will. You still glower at the wall, and Dean sighs. You feel him shift around you, one arm leaving your body to stretch somewhere off to the side.
Chocolate presses against your lips in a silent apology. You look backwards, and thatâs a mistake.
Itâs unfair, that heâs this beautiful. Tanned skin and full lips in his stupid, adorable smile. His dumb, muscled chest is warm and Golden, and you want to just roll over and press your face into it. Maybe hike your leg over his thigh and grind onto him, getting lost in his warmth and strength and cinnamon smell, and you love him, you love him, you love him-
âOpen.â Dean mutters, and you know itâs a question but your head doesnât take it to be one.
Your lips part, and Dean exhales slowly, pressing the chocolate into your mouth. His fingers go with it. It takes a lot of effort not to suck on them before he pulls them away.Â
The heat between your legs is building. Youâve had sex one more time since the Impala, and youâre still not fully sure how you managed that. It had been on the Stag hunt, and Sam had been out, and Dean had been covered in sweat and handsome and his hands had been grazing your bare skin all day, getting you lost in a smokey haze that made it hard to think straight. Youâd needed him. Needed him so bad you mightâve been about to cry over it, but you couldnât just ask.
But heâd just known. Youâd gotten back from picking up dinnerâfrom Dean driving with his hand on your thigh and you feeling like you were literally going to explodeâand heâd guided you inside with a small grin. The door had barely closed before he was on you. Flipping you so he had you pinned between him and wall, kissing you stupid before tossing you onto the bed and spreading your legs. You came on his face twice, and he only pulled away because you were sobbing and begging for his cock.Â
You hadnât walked in a straight line in the morning. Dean had fingered you in the car on the drive back home, and you havenât gotten on your knees since the Impala, but heâs taken your hand and let you rub his crotch until he was moaning in your ear.
That did end with you getting flipped over and eaten out until you were dripping down your own leg. Youâre not complaining. Youâd forgotten every word except yes and Dean.
And you have no idea how heâs so good at telling exactly what you need, when you need it. How heâs so good at telling when you like, when if he asked youâd just blink at him stupidly and mumble his name.
Youâre a little afraid to figure out what you do like. Youâd rather shoot yourself than ask Dean, who seems to have a better idea than you do. Your hoping he tries to have the porn talk with you again, if you push all the right buttons. That maybe he can just pin you down and make you list out everything youâre into, the spell of Dean and smell of cinnamon pulling the answers out of your subconscious.
You think you like this. Deanâs fingers a little in your mouth, his arms all around you. The leg humping also sounds like an amazing idea.
Dean chuckles, and you flush. You need to get a fucking grip, he can probably tell how pathetically desperate you are, and heâs revolted by it because who would want to be wanted by you, and heâs going to leave, he canât leave, he canât leave-
âLook at that, Princess.â He murmurs, and you blink at him.
âHuh?â
âIâm growing on her.â He grins, nodding down to your feet. You follow his gaze, and let out a shaky breath.
The kitten jumped back up onto the mattress, and curled near the edge. Sheâs eyeing Dean wearily, but still fully settle. You smile, and Dean kisses the top of your head.
âYou been thinking about names again?â
You look back at him with wide eyes. âI can keep her-â
âNo. Didnât say that-â
âYou said I could name her-â
âThatâs not saying you can keep her-â
âBut I can keep her.â You challenge, rolling onto your stomach. Your hands planted on Deanâs abdomen, his gripping your waist as he swallows, giving you an almost pleading expression.
âCâmon. Donât ask me that, sweetheart.â
âWhy?â
ââCause.â
ââCause why-â
ââCause.â He pinches your ribs, and you squeak, almost collapsing over his chest. Dean laughs, one hand gliding down to squeeze your ass before dragging you further up. Youâre fully straddling his torso, your fingers tangled in his hair, his attention unwavering and openly fond. You donât know how he manages to be under you and still make it feel like youâre just putty in his hands. Itâs almost too much to bear.
âWhat about Daphne.â You whisper. âOr Dr. Sexy-â
Deanâs ears go a little red, but he still snorts. âAlright, smartass. Youâre not naming the cat that shit.â
âYou think I wonât?â
âI think youâre gonna name her Han Solo or something-â
You whack his chest, and he laughs. âShut up. What about- Muffin.â
âMuffin ainât bad-â
âOr Lambchop.â
âThat one is bad.â
âOr Deanie.â You giggle, and Dean gives you a flat look.
âYou think thatâs funny, huh.â
You nod, beaming down at him, and Dean shakes his head.
âYouâre not naminâ the cat that.â
âOkay, how about Crowley-â
Dean mutters your name, and your face hurts from smiling.
âOr Sammy-â
Your words fall into a squeak as Dean rolls you under him, kissing the words out of your mouth and slotting his knee between your legs. You gasp, grabbing his shoulders, and he grins, speaking low against your lips.
âIâm not tellinâ people youâre lying in bed with Sammy all the time.â
You hum, raising your brows. âSo Deanie would be fine, then.â
Dean snorts, kissing your nose, and you wrinkle it.
âAnd if youâre going to be telling people that, it means I get to keep her-â
âJesus, woman.â He laughs under his breath, molding his lips slowly over yours. You give into the kiss in a second, dragging your nails over his back as he traces his tongue over your teeth. You moan openly and Dean squeezes your hip, dragging his mouth over your cheek, along your jaw, under your ear before nipping gently.
âDeanâŠâ You breathe out, and he makes a low sound in his chest.
âSometimes I think youâd be happy if I just dragged you out to a farm.â He mutters, breath hot on your ear, and you mumble an incoherent agreement. Youâd be happy anywhere you got to keep him.
But a farm does sound nice.
âYouâd like that, huh.â Dean kisses your cheek, before propping himself over you. âWe could raise chickens or some shit. Indy could be a sheepdog.â He grins. âSheepdragon.â
You laugh softly, shaking your head. âA farm would be a lot of work, De, we donât have the time-â
âWe could make the time. I could make it for us, then we could move there, and-â
âDean.â
He shrugs under your firm look, expression perfectly innocent. âItâs just an idea, Princess, itâs not like Iâm buyinâ property in Iowa or something-â
You frown. âI wouldnât want to live in Iowa.â
âWell, where would you wanna live? And,â he brushes some hair from your face. âYou canât say here.â
âI donât-â
âCome on. Humor me.â
He gives you that winning, boyish smile, and you never stood a chance.
You sigh, running your fingers over the lines of his tattoo. He watches you silently, patiently, muscles tensing a little under your touch, but perfectly restrained.
âI liked Maine.â You mumble, and Dean grins.
âMaine, huh.â He nods slowly. âHow much is land in Maine?â
âDean-â
âJoking.â He says quickly, pecking your lips before pushing up.
You grab the hem of his sweats before he can get too far away. âIâm serious, we do not have time to- To try and build a fucking farm in Maine, itâs across the country and animals cost money we donât have, and-â
âYour family has money. And they sure as shit donât deserve it-â
âDean Winchester-â
âHey. Joking.â He slowly pries your hand off his pants with a light smile. âGotta use the bathroom, Princess. Lemme go.â
You want to grumble something about him never letting you got when you go to the bathroom, but you swallow it with a pout and release his sweats. You can get the kitten back up the bed, if Deanâs not there. Youâre long term goal is to make her like him, so they snuggle together, and then Dean doesnât want to get rid of her. Not that youâre going to let him anyway. You found the one cat in the universe heâs not allergic to, and youâre keeping her.Â
Dean shuffles into the bathroom, and you slowly sit up on your knees, creeping down the bed and scooping the kitten into your arms. She doesnât wiggle or fight, just flopping into your arms. You lie back into the pillows, kissing the top of her head, and she doesnât seem like a Deanie, or a Daphne, or a Dr. Sexy. It also probably doesnât have to be a D name. There are a lot of other letters. You could do an EâEnigma, Elephant, Eurydiceâor a PâPenelope, Pig, Poppyâor MâMelody, Marmite, Ms. Piggyâand you think Dean started making you think about a farm too much.
Itâs not that you wouldnât love that. You would. You know you would. It sounds like a perfect life, being somewhere quiet and peaceful with a bunch of animals and Dean. No monsters, no demons, no God. Just the golden light of the morning, bird songs in the air, and Deanâs lips on yours when you wake in the morning.
But thatâs the problem. Itâs too perfect.
You donât deserve that yet.
Youâre still learning how to have this. Youâre still barely able to let Dean hold you without trying to fly away. He keeps you steady with his gravity, and you donât try to escape, but thatâs all still so new and breakable. You canât just retire with him when youâve made such a mess of the world. When thereâs still that foul little voice in your head, hissing what about when he gets sick of you. Heâs going to get sick of you. Even if he feels this pull, even if he loves you only half as much as you love himâwhich would be enough to move the universeâhe still might get sick of you. Youâve had you your whole life, and youâre the fucking worst. Heâs still clouded in a honeyed, sweet haze from how being able to have each other makes the air clear. What happens when you ruin everything, because you always ruin everything, and youâre going to ruin this and-
The kitten noses your cheek, and you take a ragged breath.
Deanâs not going to leave. Youâve given him every reason and chance to, and heâs still around.
But you also still donât deserve that. The perfect life.
You swallow on the lump in your throat, petting the kitten slowly. âYouâd enjoy a farm.â You mumble to her. âSo would Indy. Lot of flying space.â
She bumps your fingers, guiding them down her neck. You smile slightly.
âI know. Me too.â
Her purrs are soothing, and sheâs so fluffy itâs like touching a cloud. You shouldâve gotten a cat ages ago.Â
Your head tips back against the pillows, and she crawls a little higher up your chest. Deanâs body heat is still clinging to the mattress next to you, and you can feel every place heâd been, lingering in a phantom touch. For a second, everything is quiet.
Then the Silver stirs.
You sit up carefully. Itâs just a slight pull, but that shouldnât be happening. Youâre under control. Everything is fine, and thereâs nothing that can even get onto the property without your permission. You frown around the roomâmaybe Crowley, youâre not sure you ever revoked his key after the whole Purgatory mess, and you should probably do that in the morningâbut thereâs nothing.
The Silver starts to burn. Itâs bubbling under your skin, demanding and rising like a tidal wave, and the Spiderweb is starting to spark and glow. Whatever is kindling you isnât visible, isnât tangible, and maybe youâre just freaking out but youâd been fine before. The panic kicking your heart into beat is purely from the Silver and Spiderweb starting to work over time.Â
But something is wrong.
The Silver roars, and youâre shouting for Dean before you can think. Somethingâs wrong, somethingâs very wrong, the Spiderweb is casting light as if itâs been set aflame, and youâre getting bigger than yourself, but not big enough to latch onto anything but the pull of Gold. In the other room. Youâre yours, and youâre Deanâsâand thereâs an exhaustion heavy in your bones, but it seems to be lifted by a heartbeat stronger than any army drumâand you think youâre a little bit of tiny fear thatâs feral and quiet, emanating from the kitten in your arms, and-
Thereâs a flash of light, and the world flips upside down.
Itâs quick. Youâre all in color and noise for a second, a chill hits your face, and suddenly youâre standing on unsteady feet. The kitten is still curled in your arms, her tiny face hidden from the bite of the wind.
The wind.
Youâre outside.
âWhat the hell.â Dean rasps, and you feel a big hand grab your calf.
You look down, and find him on the sidewalk, flat on his ass. Heâs rubbing his face, frowning around the street, and you press your lips in a tight line.
Heâs not shirtless anymore. Heâs wearing a thick wool jacket, slacks, button down shirt, and fedora. He takes it off, running a hand through his hair, and whatever did this to you gave him a blowout too. He looks like he fell out of a movie screen, even more than usual.
You glace down at yourself, and swallow.
Youâre in a dress. Itâs tighter than youâd usually like, the kitten heels low to the ground and strapped on the top. You look back up and down the street, and all the cars are low to the ground and rounded. Thereâs less pavement and more cobbled stone. Youâre clearly in a city, but there are no skyscrapers, and-
âFuck.â You breathe out, and Dean mutters your name.
âDid we drink some of that magic dream root tea without thinking about it? Or- Maybe I knocked out on toilet, and Lucifer and Michael threw you into the 20s or something-â
âLucifer and- No, Dean.â You frown down at him. âYouâre not knocked out. And- How do you know itâs the 20s?â
âI dunno. The outfits. And cars.â He nods down the street. âI know my engines, sweetheart, and those are screaming 20s if I ever heard it.â He looks back to you suspiciously. âHow do I know Iâm not passed out. Maybe Iâm in the cage now-â
âYouâre not in the cage, how the fuck would that even happen-â
âI dunno. Stranger things.â He rubs his legs, brow furrowed. âTell me something only youâd know.â
You scoff. âDean-â
âA man gets zapped into a world from his bathroom, heâs gonna have some questions-â
âWe donât have time for this-â
âThen Iâm in a magic sleep world.â He says stubbornly. âAnd youâre not my real Princess.â
You gape at him, he gives you a firm look, still sitting on the ground.
âYouâre impossible.â You tell him, and he grins.
âI know. You love that about me.â
You flush, looking up to the sky, then taking a deep breath and looking back down.
âYou like Soap Operas.â
Dean scoffs. âAnyone could tell you that-â
âAnd you always tell people that.â You cut him off with a firm look. âTo cover for the fact that you really love bad teen dramas. Weâve watches Clueless twenty times. You made me see Jenniferâs Body with you. I wanted to see Inglorious Bastards.â
He swallows, nods slowly, and squeezes your leg. âUh, yeah. Alright.â He clears his throat. âYou want me to do one, or-â
âI know itâs you.â You dismiss, and he nods.
âRight. âCourse you do.â Dean moves slowly to his feet, brushing off his coat and glancing around the mostly abandoned road. âYou got any idea where we are. Or why the hell weâre here.â His jaw tics. âAnd where the hell Sammy is? Usually when we get yanked, he gets dragged with us.â
âI know.â You mutter, shaking your head. âBut- I donât know. Usually when this happens there are very obvious, explicit instructions.â
Dean grunts. âWeâre sending you back in time to stop your parents from getting murdered. Youâre in this maze to save your baby brother and marry the goblin king.â
You give him an amused look. âWhich one of those really happened to you?â
âNot the one you think.â He winks, and you roll your eyes.
âWell, Gabriel wasnât obvious with the time loop he did to Sam. And that was just to Sam.â
âYeah, but he was trying to teach Sammy a lesson.â
âMaybe heâs trying to teach us a lesson?â
Dean snorts. âWhat, that you look hot in a dress?â
Youâd hit him if you werenât carrying the kitten. âDean, Iâm serious-â
âSo am I,â he says your name with a shrug. âThereâs nothing heâs got to teach us. Anything I can think, Jo and Sammy did for him with the damn saferoom. âSides, he doesnât have the mojo to grab you, does he? Not against your will.â
You frown. You suppose, but itâs not like someone doesnât always find a way to grab you regardless. âI donât know, if itâs not GabrielâŠâ
You trail off, and Dean finishes with a sigh. âThen what the hell is zapping us out of the house and into the 20s frying pan.â
Both of you are silent for a moment. Then you look at each other, and understand without a word. Whatever it is, itâs got juice. Things with juice tend to like bragging an awful lot. Whoever did this is sure to show up and excitedly claim responsibility soon, and then you can very nicely threaten their life and force them to take you home.
Until then, the key is survival. The odds of someone having an unwelcome opinion about you and Dean isnât by any means low. And the number can only go up, depending on where you actually are.
Whoever did this was very nice to give you the proper clothing. Now all you have to do yourself is steal yourself a bag, Dean a gun, and both of you a car.
âHow the hell are you so good at this?â Dean mutters behind you.
You shrug. âItâs not that hard, De. Iâm just jacking a car.â
âA car from the 20s-â
âWhich makes it easier.â
He snorts. âYeah, alright, you little thief.â
âIâm not a thief-â
âYouâre carjacking.â
âWeâre going to give it back.â You mutter, and the engine spits to life.
Dean gives you a mildly amused look when you sit up, passing you the bagâthe kitten curled safely insideâwith a grin. âSure we will.â
âWe will.â
âI know. Iâm agreeing with you, sweetheart.â
You wrinkle your nose at him, muttering under your breath. âYouâre being sarcastic.â
âHm.â He kisses the side of your head, squeezing your waist gently. âMaybe. Sit.â
You whack his arm, but sit with a slight pout. Youâre not stealing. You just taking a temporary, involuntary loan. Youâll even leave them some money, as a thank you.
You do have to get that money from somewhere. But that sounds like a problem for later.
It doesnât take long to figure out where you are. Dean drives pretty aimlessly, both of you reading the street signs like either of you have major city street names memorized. Itâs nice out, but not so nice that you can immediately determine anything. You could be in the north during the summer or the south during the winter. Itâs windy, but everywhere has wind. The architecture alone tells you youâre still in the States, but itâs a big country. Youâre about to tell Dean to just go ask someone when you see it.
âDean-â You grab his arm, and he immediately slams the breaks.
âWhat, whatâs wrong-â
âThat. The Church.â You point out the windshield, and he stills.
âShit.â
You frown, pausing. âYou know it?â
âYeah, uh-â He clears his throat. âThis is where I met Death.â He shoots you a look. âYou donât think-â
âNo. He doesnât care enough.â
âOh. Right.â Deanâs silent for a second, then laughs disbelievingly. âFuck. Weâre in Chicago.â
âYeah.â You sigh, rubbing the scar on your palm, and Dean bumps your shoulder, saying your name with a wide grin.
âWeâre doing the Untouchables, this is awesome.â
You give him a small smileâheâs adorable, and obviously thrilled, and you donât want to be the sallow bitch but thereâs kind of a lot going onâand squeeze wrist lightly. âI know.â
âShit, thereâs so much stuff we could go see, and- I mean, son of a bitch-â
âDean.â You say gently. âThe magic time travel.â
âOh.â He nods tightly. âRight. Yeah. We, uh- We know where we are, I guess, so we should⊠Think about what magic shit was going on in 1920s Chicago?â
He gives you a nervous, hopeful look, and you bite down a smile.
âWhy donât we start in the magic church where you met Death?â
âGood idea. Smart.â Dean leans over, kissing your cheek, and starts the drive again. He takes you around to the back lot, fairly crowded, and you frown.
âItâs only, what- 6am?â You glance up at the sky, the sun slowly breaking through the horizon. âWhy are so many people here?â
âMaybe itâs Sunday.â
âWho goes to Church at 6am.â
âI dunno.â He shrugs. âNever went to Church.â
You sigh, leaning your head on his shoulder. âJohn not a huge God guy?â
âChrist, no.â Dean snorts. âBefore, maybe. Think we went randomly when I was a kid, before Sammy. Neither of them were all that serious about it. My grandma cared more than anyone, and weâd go for her.â
âYour grandma?â You frown. âI thought all your grandparents were dead.â
âThey were. That was my Dadâs mom, and she died like, a few months before Sam was born. Dad never knew his old man, dude vanished sometime in the 60s, just left one day and never came back. And I never met my momâs parents, but turns out they were hunters, so,â he sighs, grip tightening on the wheel. âThat tracks. Shocked they even got to get hitched and have kids.â
Thereâs something bitter and tired in his voice, and you know itâs not for you. Deanâs not mad at you. You know what that feels like, because it makes the Spiderweb scream and you want to cry.
This just aches, low and sad. You grab his hand, and tangle your fingers together. Squeeze once, and give him a small smile when he meets your gaze.
He smiles back. Squeezes three times.
Heâd said heâd marry you. That heâd give you anything, and you canât even give him anything at all.
âDean, if- If you ever-â
âNot now.â He mutters, leaning forward to kiss you softly. You rise up to meet him, bracing a hand on his thigh, and he grunts softly.
Not now is a good call. Thereâs so much else to do, and the conversation is going to lead to that fightâhe wants to retire, and youâd love nothing more but you canât, and he doesnât understand why even though everything is your faultâso you need to focus on the main thing. Youâre in the 20s. In Chicago. Something sent you here, and you donât think itâs a coincidence that you landed so close to your familyâs church so soon after they kidnapped you.
âWe should go inside.â You mumble against his lips, and Dean hums an agreement. Neither of you make an effort to pull away, when you do itâs only for need of breath.
Dean wipes a little spit off your lip, and you smile at him.
âGlad I got time-napped with you.â He mutters, and you smile.
âYou too.â
âI know. Iâm a blast.â He grins, and you giggle.
You kiss his jaw, before dragging yourself forcefully away to open the car door. If you stay there any longer, youâre going to just want to sit in the car with him and hope whatever dropped you here gets bored and reveals itself. You smooth your skirt when you stand, the kitten safely hidden in her bag under the seat, and youâre going to have to find some cat food. Or at least fish. She seems open to anything meaty, regardless of itâs prepped or cooked. Youâre sure you can find some fish.
Dean takes a few extra seconds to get out of the car, and his neck looks awfully red when he does. You frown, but he gives you a winning smile and offers his armâand he looks perfectly fineâso you let it go.
âI went to this Church as a kid.â You murmur as you walk. He nods, scanning over the lot.
âI know.â
You blink. âYou do?â
He hums, then pauses, mouth opening and closing before he gives you an oddly tense smile. âYeah, uh- You told me before.â
âOh.â Huh. âI donât remember that.â
âWeâve know each other a long time, Princess. Canât be expected to remember everything we tell each other. Come on, we donât wanna be late for service.â
Heâs dragging you forward before you can ask any more questions, and you canât imagine why he would be lying about that, but you have a pretty good memory. You usually know about what you have and havenât told someone, if only because youâd been so used to lying about identity and situations that you had to keep track.
He is right, though. Youâve known Dean for eleven odd years. You must have had some conversations you forgot. Maybe you told him last time you were in Chicago, before you had sex for the first time, and that event took over most of your memory of the night. Itâs not that worth dwelling on anyway. Bigger fish.
Youâre certainly already late for the service, but you donât think thereâs much to be done about that. Itâs 6 in the morning, and theyâre so deep into itâeveryone sitting attentively in the pews, facing the old man in shiny robs, preaching at the frontâthat you think they mightâve started at 5. You and Dean slip inside and no one spares you a glance, so you slide into one of the back benches and try to make it through the service.
More like you drag Dean into a bench, and he mouths what are we doing? With a frown. You grab a prayer book and scribble need to talk to priest before showing him the paper.
He reads it, looks to you with a really? Expression, and you shrug.
Any better ideas? You mouth, before quickly writing if thereâs demons, priest might know about them. Same for angels. Good place to start with zero leads.
Dean reads your notes and sighs, slumping into the bench but nodding in agreement. You smile apologetically, patting his knee, and he grabs your hand.
âThis is going to be boring.â He hisses, and someone whips around to shush him. He gives you a pointed look, and you fight your smile.
Youâll make it. You mouth, and he groans dramatically.
He does make it. Heâs a massive fucking baby about it, but he makes it. Dean flops around the bench while you tryâand failâto pay attention, nudging your feet together and running his fingers up your inner thigh. You whack his hand with a stern look, and he grins at you. You narrow your eyes, and he wiggles his brows.
You manage to occupy him with hangman and tic tac toe on the margins of some prayer books, and that does the trick. You adore the man, but heâs like a toddler sometimes, and when the service ends youâre shocked he doesnât start running around like a dog let off a leash.
âIâm proud of you.â You tease, kissing his cheek. He scoffs, shifting in his seat.
âShuddup.â
You giggle, grabbing his hand and tugging him to his feet. You weave your way through the crowd, examining the service goers and looking for the priest. He seems to be lost in the crowd of people looking for him, but at least he wonât be leaving the Church. It gives you time.
Most of the people here seem rich. Theyâre all wearing thick cloth like you and Dean, shiny shoes that canât have been cheap in this decade, and jewelry that sparkles in the candle and day light. A few of them give you curious looks, which means they expected to know you. Tight knit community, but thatâs not surprising. When you were four or so, you remember your mother and father muttering in the car about the dirty man poking around and getting mud all over the floors of the church. About how heâd been trying to talk to the priest, and been a bit of an ass about it, even making one of his gang members break in after hours when the Priest refused to work with him.
At least you and Dean look the part. And youâll be a lot more polite to the priest.
And if he also refuses to work with you, you have something the dirty man didnât.
A knife, and a Dean.
âHey,â he mutters, tugging your arm in the direction of the walls. âLook at that.â
You follow his gaze, and tilt your head slowly. You donât have a great memory of this place outside of reoccurring dreams and the times Michael and Lucifer showed it to you in the cage, but youâre certain youâve never seen that before. A small statue of a woman with long hair, sitting with her head bowed. Flowers are carved around her feet, massive wings folded behind her back, a lion on one side of her and a unicorn on the other. Sheâs staring at her hands, but thereâs nothing in them. You walk closer, pulling Dean with you, and squint at the plaque.
âWhatâs it say?â He leans over your shoulder, and you shake your head.
âDonât know. Itâs in Italian, and- Mineâs rusty.â
âHm.â Dean pauses, and you look over to find his face scrunched in concentration.
You smile lightly. âAre you trying to read it?â
He nods. âCanât hurt.â
âDe-â
âCould say Cool Wing Lady.â
You snort. âIt does not say Cool Wing Lady.â
âWell, you canât read it, so weâre never gonna know-â
âI am positive.â You drawl. âThat it does not say Cool Wing Lady.â
Dean laughs, and it pulls your lips into a smile. He looks so relaxed, and you donât understand how. This is stressful, and confusing, but heâd just folded over you laughing and it makes everything impossibly better.
âHuh.â He mutters, and you frown.
âWhat?â
âNothinâ. Itâs just-â He shakes his head. âShe kinda looks like you.â
You swallow, looking back to the statue. Dean lightly grabs your chin, tipping it to an angle that makes her face more visible, and you swallow. She does. Itâs like looking in a little stone mirror, and you grab Deanâs arm as your knees start to feel weak. His arm immediately wraps around your waist, keeping you steady. But of course thereâs a strange statue that looks like you here, why wouldnât there be, with every other fucking thing going on this might as well happen-
âAre you going to pay tribute?â A younger voice cuts through your thoughts, and Dean turns with a glower.
âMove along, buddy, itâs a free country.â
The boy behind you scoffs. âDonât call me buddy, pal, I could own you.â
Dean snorts. âYou wouldnât be the first to try, kid, but you sure as shit wonât be the one to succeed.â
âDean.â You sigh, ripping yourself away from the creepy statue. âNot now-â
You cut yourself off, jaw dropping.
The boy standing across from you looks just like Roman. The resemblance is almost eerie, as if the two generations between them didnât matter at all. And youâd seen pictures, but in person it almost knocks you off your fucking feet.
Thatâs your grandfather.
You donât know why youâre so surprised. This is the church your family has been going to as long as theyâve been in Chicago. But all your memories of your grandfather are faded photos and a cold, crude frown as he assessed you. A booming voice as he shouted at your parents. Cold eyes that reminded you of the same thing, over and over. Youâre never enough.
Heâs barely sixteen, but heâs broad shouldered and tips his chin up at Dean as if heâd have a shot in a fight. Dean looks unimpressedâmostly annoyedâand your nails dig into the sleeve of his jacket, ready to yank him back if he gets dragged into something stupid.
âSorry.â You smile sweetly. âHeâs- Weâre-â You look over your shoulder, back to the statue of you. Pay tribute. âWeâll move.â
You drag Dean away, and your grandfather snorts something under his breath about Dean being a one of those pansies. You have to stop yourself from turning around and swinging on him. Focus.
âI couldâve beat that little twerp up, Princess-â
âThat was my grandfather.â You hiss, and Deanâs eyes widen.
âHoly shit.â He looks back to the boy, now kneeling at the feet of your statue. âFor real?â
âYep.â
âHow do you-â
âWho does he look like?â
Deanâs brow scrunches, and you can see the exact moment it hits him. âRoman.â He mutters under his breath, and you nod tightly.
âCome on, we donât want to linger.â
Dean grunts, still glowering at your grandfather like heâd said something rude about the Impala. You guess, if youâre being very self-important and egotistical, he has.
âHeâs dead now, De.â You mutter, pulling him further into the crowd. Dean doesnât go easy.
âYou said he did the ritual on you.â
âHe did.â
âHm.â His hand fists on your hip. âLotta heavy, throwable things here.â
You give him a look, and he grins.
âI know.â Hands raise in surrender. âIâm being the big boy.â
His smile doesnât reach his eyes. You know heâs not, but you donât push it. Youâve already been stalling too much.
You keep moving Dean through the crowd, mostly trying to put distance between him and your grandfather. And part of you wants to ask if heâs thinking about it too. How your family is never going to just let up and let you go. Youâre what theyâve been working towards for centuries. To them, youâve barely more a piece of property to trade for glory.
And you want to ask if he knows. That thereâs nowhere they could put you that you wouldnât get back to him. They hadnât been able to get the amulet off. They hadnât been able to hold you forever, and if youâre strong next time, they wonât be able to hold you at all.
Youâre about to tell him that when he yanks you back and presses a hand over your mouth. You donât fight, the Silver humming easily, knowing the difference between Dean and danger.
You to elbow him and glare, though. A warning wouldâve been nice.
âSorry.â He mutters, kissing the space between your eyes quickly. âJust- Shh. Look.â
He nods up, and you follow his gaze out to the crowd. He seems to have found the priest, talking to a man dressed in the same woolen outfit as Dean himself. You give him a confused lookâthe hiding still doesnât make senseâand he sighs.
âThatâs Elliot Ness.â He mutters in your ear. âDonât look at me like that, Iâm sure.â
You werenât looking at him like anything. You just raise your brows, and he sighs.
âI panicked, alright? I didnât think weâd see him in a church- Didnât think weâd see him at all- This is so awesome-â
âDe.â You pull his hand down gently. He really is adorable. âDo you wanna say hi?â
âNo. No.â His face is a little red, and heâs shaking his head quickly. âWe donât wanna bother him, heâs probably busy, you know. Uh- Big stuff. Going on for him.â
âMhm.â You glance back to Ness and the priest. âWhy is he talking to a priest?â
âI donât know.â Dean frowns. âThat wasnât even in the book.â
You laugh under your breath, and tug Dean along the wall. It might just be normal FBI business, but Deanâs the one who always says to treat everything like itâs a part of the case. And risks donât feel worth taking right now.
And youâre right. More than anyone, Dean strikes gold when you eavesdrop on the conversation, and the topic is very much your thing.
Ness thinks Capone is running a new drink that might help them catch him. The priest does charity work, and if he sees anyone with the symptoms, he should turn them over so they can be questioned with immunity for breaking prohibition. The priest asks what kind of things the side effects are. Ness says high suggestibility. Lack of lucid thought or memory, maybe confusion about their identity or out of character behavior. Like quitting their job, or giving away all their money, taking a sudden vacation or leaving a family for a mistress, or even marrying someone theyâd told no before.
You and Dean exchange a look. You know something that does that.
Shit.
âGo, Dean- Go-â
âNo, you do it-â
âYouâre the one whoâs in love with him-â
âIâm not in love with him-â
âWhatever, youâre the pretty white boy, just go-â
âHey, thatâs bigotry-â
âItâs the 1920s, dumbass, thatâs my fucking point-â
âCan I help you two?â Nessâ measured, cool voice cuts through your hushed argument, and you both freeze. Dean looks so red youâre a little worried about him. You reach up and pat him on the cheekâtrying to gently restart himâand turn around with a willing smile.
âHello, Agent Ness.â
His eyes narrow, posture stiffening. âListen, lady I donât know who you think youâre talkinâ to-â
âYouâre Elliot Ness.â Dean blurts, and Nessâ looks around with a clenched jaw.
âKeep your fuckinâ voice low, pal.â He glares between you. âAnswer my question. Who are you.â
Dean gapes uselessly, and you sigh. âWeâre with the Beurau as well. AgentsâŠâ You glance at Dean, and sigh. âEastwood and Ford.â
Ness snorts. âA female agent, now Iâve been seen it all-â
âDonât call me a female, dude.â You sigh. âIâm not a dog.â
The man blinks in surprise, and Dean takes the silence to find his voice.
âYou- Youâre really tall.â
Ness looks him up and down. âWeâre about the same height, buddy.â
âYeah, uh-â Dean swallows. âThatâs cool.â
Ness stares for a second, then turns back to you. âWhatâs wrong with him.â
âHeâs, um-â You glance at Dean, still gaping at Ness. âHeâs having a big day.â
âHmâŠâ Ness scans over you. âAnd youâre his⊠Secrtary?â
âPartner.â Dean cuts him, and you stand a little taller.
Ness still doesnât look like he believes it. Thatâs fine. Doesnât change that heâs working with you, whether he likes it or not.
âWeâre here about the new contraband Caponeâs been running.â You say, and Ness snorts.
âEveryoneâs somewhere about something. Doesnât mean you gotta give them the time of day.â
âWow. Poetic.â
Ness scowls. âThis isnât a game, sweetheart-â
âDonât call her that.â Dean cuts in, and suddenly heâs in front of you. âAnd listen to what sheâs saying. She knows what sheâs talking about, better than either of us.â
Ness regards him, looks back to you, and raises his brows. âYou two havenât even shown me your badges, and Iâm supposed to believe youâre with a dame whoâs going to tell me how to solve my case-â
âWe didnât bring badges.â Dean cuts him off. âToo risky. You just gotta trust us, alright. You can pat us down, stick to us like glue, whatever the hell you want. But the lady says youâre working with us, youâre working with us. Got it?â
Ness is silent for a second. âAnd say,â he holds Deanâs gaze. âThat I decide I donât got it, and I have you arrested?â
âThen I sic my girl on you.â Dean shrugs. âAnd I think sheâs got a knife, but I donât know where the hell it came from. So Iâd be careful.â
âThe store sold knives.â You say proudly, and Dean frowns at you.
âWe only bought a gun.â
âYeah. I know.â
Dean sighs. âPrincess-â
Ness clears his throat, looking between you with more and more confusion. âIs she⊠Your boss.â
âYeah.â Dean mutters. âAnd she doesnât even gimme health insurance.â
You stick your tongue out at him. âI offer. Then you say you donât want to burden me-â
âWhich is me, being an awesome partner-â
âNo, itâs you being an idiot-â
Ness coughs again, louder than last time, and you flush. The drugs. The FBI agent youâre threatening. Priorities.
For some reason, itâs not any harder than the parking lot argument to convince Ness to let you work with him. He brings you to his current, deeply intoxicated witness and lets you interrogate them, standing the corner of the room the entire time.
âYou think youâre gonna get somethinâ out of him that I canât?â He asks before letting you in, and Dean snorts.
âShe could make a dead man think heâs alive. Sheâll be fine.â
Ness nods, not looking away from you. âWell, I can believe that.â
Dean scowls, and you pat his shoulder before sliding into the room. You will be fine. You are fine. It takes about five questions and the sickly sweet smell for you to know this is exactly what you thought it was. The same thing from the psych ward, Becky, and your family. Good news, in that you donât have to run around doing research. Bad in that you have no idea what the fuck youâre supposed to do with that information.
âWeâve seen this before.â You tell Dean when youâre out of the room, Ness leaning in from the background. âSame shit from Becky.â
Dean frowns, and Ness chimes in. âWhoâs Becky?â
âCriminal we brought down. Sheâd use this to, uh- Seduce men.â
Ness blinks. âThis thingâs an aphrodisiac-â
âDonât worry, itâs hard to actually make, you have to ingest it, and itâs not long term effective. Could probably kill you, if youâre not careful. So,â you shrug at Nessâ pale face. âYou know. Youâd have bigger problems.â
Ness swallows, and Dean clears his throat.
âHow the hell would Capone get his hands on this stuff. You said it was rare-â
âI thought it was rare. Claireâs the one who recognized it, and sheâd been studying specially for this kind of thing. Because sheâs crazy.â
Dean snorts. âYou encourage it, Princess-â
âI do not-â
âI know youâve been teaching her, uh-â He glances at Ness. âCoding. Tactics.â
You roll your eyes. âWell, would you rather I give her a gun?â
Ness looks between you. âWhoâs Claire?â
Dean says kid at the same time you say trainee. You blink at each other, then you say kid and Dean says trainee, and you give up all together.
âIt doesnât matter. Dean, this stuff is rare, but it shouldnât be here, rare or not. I wouldâve known more about it, if it, um-â You also look to Ness. Stupid civilians. âWas being dealt out here.â You give the confused man a sweet smile. âOur department is ⊠Weird thing. Itâs super-secret. Donât tell anyone.â
Nessâ doesnât look convinced. âAnd what are they callinâ your super-secret department, darling.â He drawls, and you swallow.
âThe Men in Black.â
Dean snorts. You stomp on his foot.
âAnd you donât have to believe us.â You add, raising your chin to hold Nessâ glare. âThat wonât make what weâre saying any less true.â
That seems to get him. Nessâ frown deepens, and he takes a step closer, never looking away from you. Dean tenses at your side.
âIf I learn youâre lyinâ to me, that youâre on Caponeâs payroll-â
âThen you can try to kill us.â You say sweetly, and Ness grunts. You sigh, turning back to Dean. âWe need to figure out whoâs dealing it here. It might help us with our⊠Bigger case.â
Dean nods slowly. âCrowley? Even if itâs not him, not a lotta other people we know running around right now.â Dean glances at Ness. âIn⊠Chicago.â
You frown, not a huge fan of that idea. But you canât think of a better one. Crowleyâs on Earth right now. You doubt heâs the dealer, but this does seem like the kind of thing heâd have a hand in, especially considering his whole cartoon villain thing.
The biggest problem seems to be that Ness demands to come with you, which is a little your fault. You did tell him that he could. But now that means youâre setting up a crossroads summoning with the Babylonian lion in your purse, and youâve got a normal fucking man hovering over your, asking questions about your informant every ten seconds. Who he is, what he does, why you trust him. A bunch of follow-ups when you say you donât trust him. Itâs incredibly annoying.
âDean.â You look over your shoulder. âCan you please give him the talk?â
Dean sighs. âWhy do I have to give him the talk?â
âBecause Iâm asking you nicely?â
He glares at you, you smile in return, and he groans. Ness frowns between you. That seems to be most of what he does.
âWhatâs the talk? âCause if youâre goinâ on about the birds and the bees, trust me, Iâm already up to speed-â
âKeep it in your pants, Casanova.â Dean grumbles, grabbing Nessâ arm and hauling him away from you.
You sigh in relief. Heâd sat down weirdly close. It had made you feel sticky and tight, and not in the fireworks way Dean did. But no one makes you feel that way but Dean, so you canât really blame Ness.
You can hear Dean giving Ness the breakdown under his breath. You smile to yourself at how annoyed Dean sounds, humming as you split the sticks and fumble in your bag for those matches you borrowed from the station. Dean and Ness are bickering in low voicesâprobably about the talk, people who think theyâd know things donât ever really take it wellâand you hum, striking the flame and dropping it.
âWell. It appears someoneâs trying to make a house call.â
You look up and smile at Crowleyâs red, greedy smoke, ballooning his vessel as he takes you in. Heâs in a different vessel from the last time you were in the 20s. A clean looking white man, British again, wearing clothing not that different from Dean and Ness.
There are shouts behind you, and Ness must have noticed the man suddenly in the room. Gunshots fire over your head, slamming right into Crowleyâs chest. He glowers, flicking his wrist, and scowls down at you when nothing happens.
âThatâs a dirty trick, little girl.â
âI know.â You grin. âYour mother taught it to me.â
Crowleyâs eyes narrow, and thereâs more shouting behind you. You glance back to find Dean wrestling the gun out of a frantic Nessâ grip, Ness half struggling and half staring at Crowley.
âWhere in Christ did he come from-â
âOh. Not Christ.â Crowly clicks his tongue, and Dean shoots him a glare.
âUnhelpful.â
âOh, Iâm sorry, pretty boy. Iâll try to be more helpful next time Iâm kidnapped by BOI agents-â
âDonât be dramatic.â You drawl. âWeâre not kidnapping you, weâre having a conversation without any⊠agitators.â
âHe shot me!â
âAnd heâs gonna apologize now.â Dean grumbles, unloading the gun and tossing it to the side. Ness doesnât move. Dean nudges him forward.
âI- Ah-â Ness swallows. âWhat are you?â
âI told you.â Dean mutters. âHeâs a demon.â
âBut- Demons arenât real-â
âLook, you process this however you need, man, but-â Dean looks at you. âWe donât know if weâre on a clock or not.â
You nod, turning back to the still scowling Crowley. âHi.â
âHello, love.â Crowly examines youâstill on the floor, your bag in your lapâwith a tight frown. âYouâre rather-â
âBright. I know. Letâs just-â You wave a hand. âSkip this part. Youâre Crowley. Youâre a Crossroads demon. Thatâs Dean, heâs a hunter.â You say your own name. âIâm the Bride of God.â
Crowleyâs mouth falls open. âThe what-â
âDonât worry about it right now. You wonât remember this anyway, and you can be as angry about this as you want, youâre not getting out of here until you answer our questions. So we can do this nice and quick, or,â you pull your new knife out of your jacket, spinning it in your hand. âI can carve you out of your vessel and feed you to my lion.â
âYour lion?â Dean says, and you shoot him a glare.
âYes. I want to keep her.â
âWoah, we havenât agreed on that-â
âLion.â Crowley cuts in, looking between you and Dean. âMaybe Iâm the blind one, but I donât see any lion-â
âSheâs in the bag.â You open the top, just enough for Crowley to see her poofy, mottled fur.
He blanches. âWhat in Luciferâs forsaken name is that-â
âBabylonian Lion Cub.â You pat her head, and she curls into the touch. âWhat do you think of Sharpay as a name? Or Buffy, or- Oh- Batman. But I could calls her Batty.â
Crowleyâs nose wrinkles. âThat thing is an abomination, it should be drowned-â
Dean snorts. âGood luck with that. Sheâs not joking about the carving you up thing.â
âI like Abomination for a name.â You say thoughtfully, closing the bag again. No need to disturb the sleeping baby. âBomby for short.â
Crowley looks at you like youâre insane. âWhat is wrong with you, girl?â
âI donât know. Sam keeps trying to diagnose me, but heâs really bad at it.â
âWhat-â
âDo you know anything about these plants?â You ask causally, passing your quickly done sketch up into his hands.
Crowley looks to you, then the paper, then snorts. âAre you serious?â
âYeah.â You nod easily, and he shakes his head.
âWhat, you think a crossroads summoning just an ask a demon game-â
âAnswer the question.â Dean grunts, and Crowley raises his chin.
âHe hasnât apologized to me yet.â He nods to Ness, and Dean scowls.
âJust fuckinâ-â
âIâm sorry.â Ness says quickly. âYouâre- Youâre a real demon.â
âIn the flesh, dear.â Crowley does the fun little eye thing, his smile like a wolf. Dean rolls his eyes, crossing his arms over his chest while Ness pales.Â
You clear your throat, gesturing to the paper, and Crowley sighs.
âFine. I will cooperate, because I believe in manners. Not because I could not break out of this feeble spell in a second.â
âUh huh.â You say, voice flat. âAnswer the question.â
Crowley sighs. Looks to the paper, back to you, and shakes his head. âWhat did you say you were. The Bride of God.â
âYep.â
âHm. Is he looking to do some environmental work?â
You frown, and Crowley smirks.
âThis is called a mirage cactus by humans, but the name I was taught, the correct name.â He drops the paper back on the ground. âIs Eveâs hair.â
You look back immediately, catching Deanâs gaze. He tips his head slightly, and you know heâs thinking the same thing. No coincidences.
âOf course, we call it the Whoreâs Pubes.â Crowley smirks. âBut thatâs just us lowly, common folk.â
You grab the paper, examining your own sketch. Dean clears his throat. âYou did tell me this thing is native to hell, Princess-â
âI thought I was confusing it with something else.â You mutter, frowning back to Crowley. âBut- It does grow naturally on earth.â
âItâs an invasive species.â He shrugs. âNative to hell is the key word, I believe. But things also die. Quiet a lot. Just like that thing in your little bag should-â
âWhy.â You ignore his jab at your lion. Sheâs perfect. âWhyâd it die out?â
âI donât know, why does anything die out. Iâm not a bloody herbologist-â
âWhat about seeds.â Dean grunts. âGot any idea who might have their hands on some?â
Crowley snorts, and shakes his head. âWhy on earth would I know about that, because Iâm a demon? Tell me, pretty boy, do you know who might be able to find you a unicorn?â
âYeah, actually. I do.â
âWell.â Crowley sniffs. âI may have an idea who might be able to make seeds.â
You sit up. âWho-â
âEve. Mother of Monsters. Itâs an old legend of hell, she makes everything that isnât us, and isnât you.â He nods to Dean and Ness, then pauses on you. âOr maybe she does make you. Whatever you are.â
Itâs better if you ignore that. And of course Eve might be able to make them, but sheâs still locked in Purgatory. Which is going to limit your option for whoâs selling them to 1920s Chicago Gangsters.
You examine Crowley, biting your tongue. You have him here. Might as wellâŠ
âHell has legends?â
Crowley dips his head. âWe are cultured, some of us more than others.â
You hum. âAnd what do those legends say about Leviathans?â
Dean snaps your name. You ignore him, raising your brows at Crowley. Heâs mostly looks a little amused, but not in his Iâm about to fuck everything up or Iâm going to tell a very annoying lie way. He just seems to like that youâre ignoring Dean.
âNothing at all.â He purrs, and you sigh.
âThatâs what I thought.â You push to your feet, wiping your hands. âSee you in 80 years.â
You wipe Crowleyâs memory before he can protest, and turn around. Ness is taking deep breaths through his mouth. Dean is glaring at you.
âWhyâd you ask about the Leviathans-â
âI was curious.â
âNo, youâre thinking about them again-â
âI havenât stopped thinking about them.â You snap. And you really havenât. Not when you wake up from another nightmare about that dead world. Not when you look at the kitten and still see the tiny scars from their venom, not when youâre alone for too long and start to picture the scream of the one youâd killed, and the one that had been mimicking Dean. You canât stop thinking about them. âItâs something bigger, De-â
âEverythingâs always something bigger, that doesnât mean we need to keep upping our bets with the game-â
âBut what if we can win-â
âWe never win!â Dean shouts, voice echoing through the air. âThis isnât a game you fuckinâ win! You donât get out unless you walk out, and yeah, it makes me a selfish son of a bitch, but I donât care what we leave behind, long as weâre out.â He takes a firm step forward, glaring down at you. âI want out, Princess. Not of you.â He adds quickly, and you bite your dumb, wobbling lips. âNever of you. With you. Just- We can walk out.â
He grabs your face between your hands, and you drop your face into his chest. Heâs Golden. Warm. His jacket wraps around you with him, and it makes you feel like youâre under a protected shield.
âI know.â You mumble, fidgeting with his belt loops. âI- I know, De, but- We still donât know why weâre here. What sent us.â
âThatâs got nothing to do with my thing-â
âThereâs something I donât trust.â You murmur, looking up at him, your voice getting smaller. âAbout all of this. Something- I donât know. Itâs all soâŠâ
You trail off, and Dean sighs, dropping his brow against yours.
âComplicated.â He grunts, and you nod.
âYeah.â
Both of you fall silent, and you let your eyes flutter close, just breathing him in. Heâs still here. Heâs pissed at you, but neither of you are moving. And you wonât. You wonât leave him, and he can grow roots into the ground wherever the hell he wants. Maine, Iowa, South Dakota, back to Kansas, across the world. He can chose a place to stand and youâll stand with him. Youâll make him your home, and youâll never fly so far you canât get back.
Ness clears his throat, and you both look up. Youâd forgotten he was there.
âWho the hell are you people?â He croaks. âWhatâs a Leviathan, whoâs Eve, where did the demon go, and- There was a demon-â
âDean.â You say as Nessâs breathing picks up, and he grunts.
âAlright, Buddy. In through the nose, out through the mouth.â He holds Ness upright, looking to you in a silent question. You shrug. Youâre going to erase him anyway. Might as well.
âHe- He said you were the Bride of God.â Ness mutters as you walk over. âThat must be why you look- Like that-â
âNah. Thatâs all her. Ow.â Dean glares up at you. âI was giving you a compliment, baby.â
You flush, trying to shrug it off. He canât compliment you in public. It makes you all giggly and stupid. âI am Godâs Bride.â You tell Ness. âBut, uh- Weâre in negotiations about it.â
âNegotiations.â Dean grumbles. You ignore him, and break it down as fast and easy as you can. Youâre skimming a lot of details and doubling back when you realize theyâre important, but itâs a hard story to tell. Hard to hear as well, apparently. Ness looks like you just told him he was going to die in a few days.
As an afterthought, you tag on that you are from the future, but you canât tell him any details about it, in case he runs off and tries to change something.
âBut you catch Capone.â Dean adds at the end. âAnd they make a great movie about it.â
âDean-â
âWhat, his whole world is getting messed with! Let him have the win.â
You sigh, and give Ness a kind smile. âItâs an alright movie.â
âItâs amazing-â
âThe Godfather is better.â
âNo, itâs isnât.â
âYes, it isâ
âShe just thinks Marlon Brando is hot.â Dean glares at you. âHe was racist.â
âI know. I just like old men.â You grin at Ness. âI canât wait for him to be like- fifty.â
Ness blinks. Opens his mouth, closes it, scans over you, then looks back to Dean.
âAre you two married?â
Heat rushes your face, and Dean throws his arm around your waist, pulling you into his side with a wide grin.
âNot yet, but- You know how it is, I gotta beat out the competition-â
You cover his mouth, giving Ness a winning, casual smile like you donât feel oddly lightheaded in the best way.
âThe case. We should be focusing on the case.â
You shoot Dean a firm look. He winks at you, and the Spiderweb glows.
Itâs a miracle you donât jump him right there.Â
Crowley was only a help in the sense that he was there, and he did tell you things. Other than that, not much progress has been made. You need to figure out who the hell is selling Capone the drug. Whoâd know how to make it, let alone be able to get the plant. Dean wants to go ask Capone himself. And you already have a pretty good idea of whoâs doing itâor at least a confident theoryâbut heâs having so much fun. You donât have the heart to tell his cute little puppy face no.
Ness takes you to where Caponeâs secret lair is. Dean says itâs just an office.
âThere are too many guards for this to be an office.â You mutter, watching them wearily.
Dean leans down, whispering in your ear. âItâs on the business records, sweetheart-â
âCaponeâs records are very famously falsified.â You hiss, and he beams.
âYou have been paying attention to the movie.â
You roll your eyes, but donât manage to bite your smile when he kisses your cheek. If he keeps this up, you wonât be able to work cases with him anymore. Youâll just spend the whole time fawning after him and trying not to become a gooey, giggly mess, pouting for his undivided attention.
Dean wouldnât be a big fan of working separate cases, though. When you reach Capone, they try to make youâthe girlâwait outside. A vein pushes at Deanâs brow, it takes five minutes to convince him youâll be fine, and right outside the door, and he can even come check on you if he needs to. Ness and Dean walk into the office with the list of questions you gave them. Caponeâs guards eye you like an attack dog they waiting to strike, gaze raking over your legs and jacket and purse. You fix them with unblinking glares in return, and they start to whisper.
âWhatâs a girl like you doinâ with two straights like that?â One of the braver ones coos.
You donât even pretend to make your voice warm. âDonât talk to me.â
His eyes narrow. âBitch thinks she can speak without someone stuffing her up-â
One of them tries to grab you, and you duck away smoothly, keeping one hand on the bagâdonât want to bother the kittenâwhile your other goes for the knife. Another one tries to make a swipe at your arm, and you spin the blade, pressing it to his throat and backing him against the wall. Youâd think the rest of the men would be shouting, but theyâre all mostly just gaping and whispering as you glare up at the one who tried to touch you.
âI said,â you press the blade deeper. He whimpers. âDonât talk to me.â
He swallows, nodding slightly, and you smile.
âGood boy.â
The door swings open, and you turn back to Dean and Ness with a wide smile. Dean scans over youâquickly tucking the knife into your jacketâthen the guards, a tight frown pulling on his features. You take his hand, sliding back to his side, and bump his shoulder.
âAny luck?â
âUhâŠâ He coughs, shaking his head. âYeah. I mean, no name, but- He said the guy was British. You donât think Crowley was just pulling one on us-â
âNo. There are lots of British people.â You glace over your shoulder. âAnd the supply-â
âTold him that if he didnât get rid of it, weâd kill him. Donât know if heâs actually gonna do it-â
âI think he will.â You wave at one of the guards, and he looks like heâs going to vomit. âPussies.â
Dean frowns. âWhat did you do.â
âNothing.â
He grunts your name, and you shrug.
âIâm fine-â
âBecause youâŠâ
You glare at his prompting. He raises his brows, and you sigh.
âKnife.â You mutter, and he sighs.
âJesus, Princess-â
âThey tried to grab me! It was self-â
âThey tried to what.â
Maybe you shouldnât have told him that. Deanâs already reaching for his gun, turning back to teach them manners, and you have to drag him from the rest of the building. Ness watches with a quiet fascination, but doesnât dare interrupt. A good call. Dean doesnât seem to be seeing five feet in front of him unless itâs you.
When you go back to the warehouse to set up the next ritual, heâs sulking on the floor, his knees bent and the bag between them. The kitten keeps poking her head out to sniff him, and he always offers a hand before patting her head. You smile. Youâre not even sure he knows heâs doing it.
âWhat demon are we summoning now?â Ness asks, standing over youâa very polite distance awayâand you sigh.
âNot a demon. This,â you nod to the mess in front of you. âIs for an angel. Warding against it, specifically. Summoning an angel without the right safeguards-â You wrinkle your nose. âNever ends well.â
âAh.â Ness mutters. âThere are⊠angels.â
âMhm. Thereâs pretty much⊠Everything.â
âAnd you have dealt with all of it?â
âMost of it.â You sigh. âThereâs always more.â
You look over to Dean, a lump forming in your throat. Heâs giving his full attention to the kitten now, muttering something under his breath thatâs probably just bitching about the whole situation, and sheâs blinking up at him with her big, blue eyes like heâs the greatest thing youâve ever see. You understand the idea.
âYou and Mr. Eastwood seem to have quite the connection.â
âMe and- Oh.â Youâd forgotten about the aliases. âUm- Yeah.â
âYouâre not married.â Ness glances down to your hand, and you flush.
âWeâre partners.â And married wouldnât be enough. If Dean really does want to marry you, youâre never going to stop him, but husband doesnât feel like a big enough word for what he is to you anymore. Heâs the only thing youâre certain youâre going to have, the only thing that keeps you on your feet some days, the only thing you shine for and the only place you want to be able to see. You could get lost in him, and be perfectly found, and there are no human words for how big that really is.
Ness must see it on your face. He nods slowly, words gentler that youâve heard all day. âHe loves you greatly. I have seen many men who find adoration for their women, but he⊠It is more than I can fathom.â
You have no answer to that. You just bite the inside of your cheek, focusing on the ritual as the Spiderwebs glows so bright it might blind you. You love him too. You love him more than you have the words for, more than there are things in the universe to shape in his name. But if you say it, God might take him. And if God takes him, youâre going to become something nobody could ever love at all.
âDean.â You call, finishing the last ward. âReady.â
âComing.â He shuffles up to your side with the kitten in his big hands. You give him an amused look, and he grunts, cheeks turning a little red. âShe was getting antsy. Cooped up in the bag too long.â
You hum. âShe likes you.â
âShe likes that I ainât trying to stab her-â
âShe likes you.â You kiss his jaw quickly, before you can lose the nerve. Dean makes a low sound in his chest, and you force your attention back to the ritual. âReady?â
He nods, and when you look at Ness, the agent just makes a strangled, nervous sound. You suppose thatâs ready enough.
And summoning an angel is easy. Especially when you have a name, and that angel is a little attention whore.
Balthazar never ignores a prayer. Not when it might be a business opportunity. And even if you get old Balthazarâinstead of your version, who youâre willing to bet did more contract work for Eve than he owned up toâat least youâll be able to use him to get to your Balthazar. Who has been ignoring your prayers, but only because he knows itâs you and he probably thinks youâre going to stab him or something. Which is something you never wouldâve done. Last week. Before he pissed you off.
But itâs not either Balthazar that shows up in your warehouse. The angel that touches down isnât made of bronze, but a brilliant, electric blue. Â
You gape at the frowning woman in front of you, her hair dark and loose, eyes big and brown, but expression the exact same one youâve always known.Â
âCas?â
Cas glares at you, his eyes narrowing, and Dean coughs.
âSweetheart, thatâs a chick-â
âI know. Vessels.â You take a step forward as Dean mumbles an Oh, watching Cas carefully. âHi, Cas- Tiel.â This isnât your Cas. He wonât know the nickname. âYouâre Castiel.â
Castielâs eyes narrow. HeâShe? It doesnât matter, itâs Casâlooks between you and Dean, voice low and filled with suspension. âI am not the angel you prayed to.â
Dean snorts. âYeah, weâre working that one out, buddy-â
âHow do you know who I am.â Castiel raises his head, hair falling over his features, and you swallow.
âI can see you? Like- You you.â This is so weird. âI have soul vision.â
Castiel looks you up and down, frown deepening. Itâs a little amazing, how itâs the exact same frown on this vessel as the one youâre used to.
âWhat is soul vision.â
âShe can see souls.â Dean jumps in, and Castielâs attention turns to him with an even deeper frown. âAnd, uh- Angels. And demons. All of it. You, me, sheâs seeing under the meatsuits. And- Yeah.â
Castiel hums, tilting his head. âHumans cannot see souls.â He muses, looking back to you. âBut you⊠You are notâŠâ
He trails off, and you smile at him tightly.
âI have never seen anything so bright.â He murmurs. âHeaven should know of you-â
âWeâre not big fans of Heaven.â Dean mutters, and Castiel glares at him.
âHeaven does not care for the opinions of humans-â
âMaybe right now, but theyâre gonna be all up our asses in about eighty years-â
âNo angel has ever gone up an ass.â
Dean smirks, and you can see the joke forming in his eyes. You whack his arm, giving him a firm glare.
âNot our Cas.â You hiss, and he sighs.
âYeah. I know. But itâs right there-â
âDean.â
âFine, your majesty.â
You glare at him, and he just gris back.
âYou know, there are a lotta good things about going up the ass, and I could show you- Son of a bitch-â
He earned that elbow in the gut. And heâs lucky you love him, or youâd smack him too.
Youâre even smiling to yourself, when you turn back to Castiel. It falters, though, the second you see his face. Her face.
The expression Cas hasnât worn in years, where he examines you like he thinks you might be the answer to every problem. Youâre what Iâve been waiting for, heâd told you, when Dean sent him to find you. And all youâd ever done for him was fail to help, force him to give up heaven to save your life, and make him crazy. You think you could save him now, if you told him to ignore you and Dean, when the apocalypse begins.
But youâre not brave enough. Not good enough. You need him around. Dean needs him around. So you bite your tongue, and give Castiel another, tight smile.
He blinks at you slowly, words low. âNot even my greatest brothers-â
âIâm bigger than your greatest brothers.â You sigh. âGodâs Bride. Magdalene, Whore, whatever. Lotâs going on, but- Youâll understand in like, 80 years.â
â80 years.â Cas echoes, looking between you and Dean. âYou are not from this time.â
âNope.â Dean shrugs. âWe come from the great land of heating and phones-â
âMichael and the Seraphs dictated no time travel.â Castiel mutters. âYou are unsanctioned in this world.â
âWeâre always unsanctioned somewhere.â Dean grumbles, and Castielâs frown deepens.
âHow did you get to this time.â
âUh-â Dean glances at you. âJuryâs out on that one.â
âJury. You are on a trial-â
âNo.â You jump in quickly. âWe donât know how weâre here. Or- Why.â
âWe got distracted.â Dean adds, and Castiel blinks.
His eyes fall to the kitten in Deanâs hands, and he stands a little taller. In his vessel, wings flare, and you wince. Your Cas hadnât reacted great to her. Thatâs your mistake.
âA first beast.â He almost growls, and Dean pulls the kitten closer to his chest. âWhere did you find such a thing-â
âWoods.â Dean snaps. âEyes off, buddy, she gets nervous.â
Castiel shakes his head, millions of eyes staring at the kitten. âWe have not been notified of the threat. They should all be dead-â
âFuckinâ try something-â
You touch Deanâs arm, taking a step forward, and he falls silent. Still cradling the kitten tight to his chest, as you frown at Castiel.â
âDoes Heaven keep track of threats?â
âOf course we do.â Castiel says, using the same isnât that obvious voice thatâs usually directed at Dean.
You nod slowly. âAnd⊠Whatâs on that list right now?â
Dean grunts your name. âThe case-â
âI can deal with Balthazar when we get home.â You mutter, keeping your eyes on Castiel. âThis is more important.â
You and Castiel stare at each other for a second, and youâre not certain heâs going to answer. This Cas is still loyal to Heaven, and hasnât been through hell and back with you. You wouldnât exactly be able to fault him for not trusting the strange woman from the future-
âThe list of Heavenâs threats.â He says, you nod quickly, and he frowns. âIt is not all that interesting. We are effective, these are horrors that will never come to pass.â
You snort, Dean scoffs, and Castiel gives you both strange looks.
âYou are odd humans.â
âYouâre an odd angel.â Dean fires back, and you sigh.
âIgnore him. The list, please.â
Castiel thinks for another long moment, then clears his throat. âIt is not long. Heaven is strong. Lucifer, Lilith, Azazel.â He frowns at the air. âCain. Eve-â
âEve?â You cut in. âWhy Eve?â
Castiel sniffs. âI am not at liberty to divulge such information to⊠humans.â
âBut Iâm not human. You know that.â You take a step forward. Your back is hurting again, but the Silver is humming easily as you hold Castielâs gaze. âTell me.â
He blinks at you, and whatever he sees, itâs the same as that first time. Enough for him to trust you, for no reason at all.
Part of you wonders if your Cas would take that trust back, if he could. If this one would, if you were brave enough to tell him his future.
âShe hasâŠâ Castiel sighs. âMade efforts before. Against us. I do not have more details than that.â
You nod, tight and short. âWhat about the Leviathans.â
Dean grunts your name. You ignore him, but Castiel just shakes his head.
âI do not know anything of that name.â
Fuck. You look back to Dean with wide eyes, and he glares right back.
âPrincess-â
âWe have to do something about them-â
âThe hell we do-â
âItâs something the angels donât monitor, Dean-â
âWhich means itâs not that big a deal-â
âOr itâs a huge fucking deal, because who do you think theyâre getting their list from-â
âI donât know, Angel Google-â
âHim.â You snap, and a shadow flashes over Deanâs face. âAny threats they know about probably are managed by Michael, and anything Michael deems a threat is because he was told it was a threat. By him.â
Dean scowls, voice taut and low. âMaybe heâs wrong about what threats are. And Michael thought for himself, and counted the Leviathans out.â
You shake your head. âYou know thatâs not what happened. If they arenât on the list, that means he doesnât want them to be. And theyâre-â You swallow, a deep, sunken chill slithering over your bones at just the thought of them. Of all that Death. âTheyâre evil, Dean. You know theyâre evil. So why wouldnât he want Heaven to know about them.â
Dean works his jaw, but he doesnât answer. Ness coughs.
âUh⊠Whatâs a Leviathan?â
âI have the same question.â Castiel mutters, and you sigh.
âWe donât know. Weâre still figuring it out. De, we need to at least find one to interrogate-â
âNo.â He grunts, words pushed through his teeth. âWe donât.â
âYes-â
âWhy? Why the hell does this always have to be our job-â
âBecause! It is, itâs my job, Dean, itâs-â You take a deep, uneven breath, forcing your voice to stay firm. âEveryoneâs told me to accept what I am.â You mutter, holding his gaze. âTo stop fighting it, and this is me not fighting it.â
Deanâs throat bobs. âThis isnât what they meant-â
âIsnât it?â
For a moment, youâre both silent. Staring at each other in the low light of the warehouse, Castiel and Ness just blurs in the background. Your head hurts. You back hurts. Everything hurtsâthe Silver pressing up your throat, your hands flexing to wrap around your neck and force it back downâbut Dean is still clear. Still in focus.
âWe can retire after-â
âThereâs never an after.â He mutters, voice bitter. âYou know thereâs never an after, sweetheart.â
âNo. There- There will be one this time.â It hurts to speak. âI wonât fail.â
Dean gives you a sad, heavy look, murmuring your name. You shake your head.
âPlease.â
He doesnât answer. You donât beg again, not with an audience. And everything just⊠Keeps moving.
You still donât know why youâre here. What sent you, or how to get back. Youâve called it on the Capone caseâBalthazarâs a drug dealer, big surpriseâand you wipe Castiel before releasing him. You go to wipe Ness, but he back away. He doesnât want to forget. You look to Dean, and he just sighs, and nods. You make Ness swear never to tell anyone. You believe him when he says he wonât.
âIf more comes back-â
âIt wonât.â You mutter, taking your bag and the kitten back from Dean. âIâm going to talk to the angel whoâs doing it when we get home. I donât think heâs working for the woman who makes the drug anymore either way. Nothing for you to worry about.â
Ness nods, looking between you and Dean. âGood luck with your time. Iâm sure heâll come around.â
You bite your lower lip, and nod. Even if you donât believe it.
Dean wonât come around. Not on this. You know him, and even if he agrees to let you do this, heâs not going to be happy about it. But youâre horrible, and cancerous, and demand that he go down with you every time you fall. One day heâs going to have had enough. Heâs going to give up on you, decide youâre not worth the trouble, leave you to just burn in the sky alone, nothing to care about without him there.
He drives to the motel Ness directed you to. Neither of you yell, but neither of you speak, and itâs worse than screaming. The air is too hot, too thick. It feels like youâre breathing steam, even as the night chill bites at your ears. You almost start the fight again, just because you want it to be over. If you both shout and argue now, you wonât have to later.
But you donât want to fight at all.
You run your fingers through the kittenâs fur, tears pricking at your eyes, and you donât want to fight with Dean.
The motel room is small. You settle while Dean goes out to find dinner and food for the cat. She lies on your chest while you stare at the ceiling, fighting back body-shaking sobs. Nothingâs even happening. Your whole body just hurts, and Deanâs barely looking at you, and youâre so, so tired.
The kitten noses your face, and you sniff, rubbing behind your ears. When the door opens, she scrambles away quickly, hiding under the bed. You roll onto your stomach, hiding your face in the sheets. You donât want him to deal with you right now. You canât just be another fucking burden, problem, thing that he has to solve-
âHey.â A warm, certain weight curls around you, and you press back into it despite yourself.  Â
Deanâs arm loops around your stomach. You grab it to keep it there, even as you keep hiding your face. His lips press on your neck, and youâre shaking with the effort not to cry.
âIâm not mad at you, Princess.â He murmurs in your ear. The first tears burn on your cheeks. âI mean, Iâm pissed about the whole situation. But Iâm not- Itâs not your fault.â
But it is. It is. Itâs always your fucking fault, everything is your fault, you turned that Castiel into the one who wanted to open Purgatory, you let evil loose on the world, you messed up everything in Heaven and you let Eve out and-
âBreathe.â Dean murmurs, his hand sliding slowly under your shirt. He grabs right under your breast, squeezing three times, and it works immediately.
You inhale sharply, your body shaking with silent sobs. Dean kisses your throat, almost wrapping himself around you, and you wiggle further into the safety of his body.
âI- I donât-â You gasp for air, each word a labor to get out. âI donât wanna fight right now.â
The words sound weak and childish to your own ears. Dean just hums, squeezing your ribs again.
âAlright. No fighting.â
And thatâs it.
Youâre not that hungry. Dean doesnât seem to be either, because thatâs just the kind of day youâve had. In the morning youâll have to figure out why youâre here. How youâre going to get back home. For now you both just lie in each otherâs warmth, Deanâs face buried in your neck and your heartbeat slowing under his hands. The kitten hops up on the bed and curls near your feet. Your tears dry, and Deanâs chest rumbles behind you with low snores.
Usually the sound is white noise, and you knock out soon after him. But tonight, your eyes droop and your brain fogs, but you canât fall asleep. Your back still aches, although Deanâs warmth is soothing it and the Silver. Itâs mostly your head.
Your head hurts.
It feels like someone is driving an ice pick through your eyes, throbbing and burning right to the base of your skull. You can only breath through your nose, and bile is rising up your throat. You roll over to wake Dean up, but he looks so peaceful. Itâs probably just stress. And heâs already taken care of you once tonight.
You roll carefully out of his arms. At the foot of the bed, the kitten blinks up at you with bleary, big eyes. You kiss her little head, then look back to Dean. Handsome and dead to the world and yours. You kiss his head too, and he makes a low, grumbly sound, gathering the sheets tight in his arms. You smile to yourself. The noise sounded like your name.
When you get into the bathroom, you donât bother to turn on a light. It would only hurt. You splash cold water on your face, but it does nothing. The sickness grows and twists in your stomach, but when you lie at the toilet nothing comes out. And your head hurts, it hurt so fucking bad, like someone pressing it between two iron plates, and without Dean the Silver is building up and rolling in so fast, and suddenly you canât breathe. You canât breathe, everything hurts and you canât fucking breathe-
This world is dead.
Thereâs all the smoke, and smog, and withered stone and flowers under your feet. Youâd throw up if there wasnât such a gaping hunger in your chest, and youâd scream if you could take in a full breath. This world is dead and wrong, wrong, wrong, everything is wrong and you canât fucking breathe-
The Silver flares, and you yank yourself out of the vision right when you feel it.
Him.
You scramble back, tripping over your own ankles and grabbing for any kind of weapon as God frowns down at you. Thereâs nothingâeven the washcloths are goneâand the Silver is brimming right under the surface but just like every time before, it canât quiet burst out.
âWoah.â God says your name in Enochian, taking a step forward. âItâs just me, no need to freak out-â
You kick up, slamming into his shin, and he stumbles back with a grunt.
âOw. Come on, thatâs not nice-â
âDean!â You scream, and you shouldnât, but itâs the only thing you can think. âDean-â
âYeah, Deanâs out.â God sighs, and your attention snaps back to him, the Silver becoming sharp and focused.
You could drive it right through him like a knife. You could shred him to pieces if he hurt Dean, you donât care what the rest of the world becomes, an ashen wasteland or an overgrown jungle, nothing gets to be okay if he hurt Dean-
âI didnât hurt him.â God says quickly, raising his hands. âHeâs just not going to hear you. Heâs passed out. Here.â He steps to the side, pulling the door open behind him. âLook. Heâs fine.â
You scowl, keeping a careful eye on God as you crawl forward. Deanâs sleeping peacefully, right where you left him. Holding the blankets tight, snoring and relaxed. Youâd fall over with relief, if you werenât already on the floor.
âSee? Fine.â God frowns at Dean, and you want to claw his eyes out. He shouldnât be allowed to look. âYou know, Iâve spent the whole day trying to talk to you alone. And heâs just⊠Always there.â
God makes a sour expression, and you put it together fast.
âYou sent us here.â You mutter, and God sighs.
âI tried to send just him.â He jerks his head to Dean. âI had a whole plan about how there would be a time god to take the blame, and Dean could run around living out his little fantasy while you and I talked. But you just⊠Held on.â
âHe wouldâve been alone.â You move to your feet slowly, placing your body between God and Deanâs sleeping form. âHe mightâve gotten hurt-â
âI wouldnât have let him get hurt.â God dismisses. âI know what he means to you. Iâd never hurt you like that.â
âBut youâd hurt him if I couldnât do anything about it.â
God frowns. âDonât- Donât do that. Donât twist my words. I like Dean too, heâs one of my favorites. I donât just make anyone a chosen one, you know. Deanâs perfect, heâs got his whole little Devil May Care thing, heâs funny, big hit with some surprising demographics, but I wouldnât change a thing about him.â He pauses. âOkay. Thatâs a lie. Iâd change one thing.â
He gives you a pointed look. You might be about to vomit the Silver all over the floor.
âHe cares.â You say. âDean cares. A lot.â
âI know. I made him.â God sighs dramatically. âYou know I made him, right? I feel like you keep forgetting that part-â
âWhy are you here.â You cut him off, trying to sound as tight and formal as you can. âYou were gone for months-â
âI was trying to give you some distance.â God shrugs, playing with the sink faucet as he speaks. âThere was some tension from the whole end of the world stuff, which isnât your fault. I did warn you to keep out of that messy business, but you didnât listen, and I understand why that mightâve messed with your head. With your idea of us. And I mean, thereâs that great human saying. Absence makes the heart grow fonder.â He grins. âYou missed me, didnât you? You wondered where I was. Thatâs progress.â
You donât let a single emotion onto your face. âWhy are you here.â
âBecause I want to help!â
You scowl. âYou donât help.â
âYes, I do. Everything thatâs anything, I made. So, medicine, thatâs me!â
âCancer is also you.â
God sighs. âYeah, but- Look, thatâs not the point. Iâm hands off, Iâve been hands off, but-â He spreads his arms. âIâm breaking that rule. For you! Iâll always help you,â he says your name soft, and it sounds like a rotting part of a fruit. âI think thatâs a trait you find attractive. Right?â
Your mouth falls openâin shock or disgust, youâre not entirely sureâand God frowns.
âI would appreciate feedback if Iâm wrong. You know, the problem with not giving you any strings is that I really have to woo you, and Iâve never wooed anyone before. And I canât see in your head, so I have to figure out who you are, what you like, and let me tell you,â he says your name, shaking his head. âYou are not an easy book to read. But, Iâm willing to do the work. If Iâm making you earn it, I should earn it too.â He clears his throat. âYou like animals, I can make you a zoo! Books, Iâll create a massive library that had everything you could ever want. I found this one book, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, I could make that for you-â
âThat book is a cautionary tale.â You mutter. âAnd I prefer the BFG.â
âReally?â Chuck blinks. âOkay. Well- Iâll read that one, and we can talk about it. I watched the Indiana Jones movies, too. Youâre right, they are better than Star Wars-â
âIâve been coming around on Star Wars. Samâs been making me watch it again.â
God frowns. âSam. Samâs been making you watch it.â He shakes his head. âWhy would you ever do something you donât enjoy, you could command them with a thought-â
âWell, I donât want to.â You snap. You like watching and debating about things with Sam. You love watching movies you donât love with Dean, just to see him smile.
A life where youâre just talking to someone who mirrors you all the time sounds like a death sentence. You can barely stand to just look in the normal mirror sometimes.
âWhat do you want.â You repeat, words colder and firmer. God sighs.
âLike I said, to help. Iâm not meddling, Iâm still hands off, but if you need a little tip about some allegiances-â
âCrowley and Eve?â
God blinks. âHow did you-â
âI figured it out like, weeks ago.â In the storage room. Between Hellâs Assassins and having the one drug that could temporarily incapacitate you, that only Eve could make, youâd been pretty sure. This trip just confirmed it. âYou really want to help me?â
âYes.â He says immediately. âAnything, my love, as long as itâs- You know- Reasonable-â
âWhat happened with Eve.â
Godâs features darken. Itâs such a sudden shift, he almost looks like a different person. No longer mousy and small. This is the God that people wrote about that. That they fear.
But you donât waver. A voice that sounds like Death whispers in your ear, reminding you to stand tall, and you donât even blink.
âYou donât need to know that.â God growls, and you raise your chin.
âYou want to help, tell me-â
âYouâve been having visions.â He cuts you off. âI know you have.â
You blink. âHow-â
âA hunch. I havenât been going inside your head. I canât. Cross my heart.â He gives you an almost sad look, the darkness passing so fast you feel insane for seeing it at all. âBut I know. I know what youâve been seeing.â
âWhat- What is it-â
âYou could save us all.â He takes a step forward, ignoring you completely. âIf you agreed. To be mine.â
You recoil, the Silver sparking and angry under your skin. âI thought I had to mean it.â You whisper, and God shrugs.
âYou do. Thatâs part of my wooing. I charm you, you save us.â
He keeps saying it like that. You frown, tilting your head slowly.
âUs?â
God blinks. âThe royal us. All of us.â
He waves a hand around the room, but it doesnât ease your thoughts. Us.
âWhat-â
âItâs late.â God cuts you off again, looking up to the sky, then back to you. âDeanâs waiting. Iâll give you back to him, while he gets his shot, but- Hey.â He winks at you, and it crawls like bugs over your skin. âIâm coming for you, Honey. Start planning the wedding. Iâm thinking⊠White doves.â
Thereâs not even a chance to make a face at the idea before God snaps his fingers, and the world flips upside down.
You land on your feet in your bedroom. Your real bedroom, back home. You whip around to find Dean still knocked out, grumbling in his sleep as he readjusts. The kitten blinks at you for a few seconds before yawning, kneading at the blankets, and pressing her head down into her paws.
Deanâs unharmed. You feel his brow, even peel away the cushions to check for a wound, and thereâs nothing. When you check your phone, itâs only a few minutes from midnight.
No time had passed at all.
But you walk to the window, and open the curtains.
And outside.
The Sky is watching you again.
