Dean is truly brilliant. Can you imagine how difficult school must have been for him? He never had the benefit of consistent curriculum, text books, or teaching methods. He never had the benefit of a parent to help him, answer questions, force him to do his homework. In fact, Dean had to try to give himself some sort of education while at the same time caring for Sam, patching up his dad, dealing with his own PTSD, and hunting. We know that he had to learn to drive when he was “little” probably to be John’s backup or getaway driver, which means at the very least out late at night doing something scary and dangerous and either missing school the next day or being exhausted and traumatized through it. He made his first sawed-off in 6th grade and we know from Just My Imagination that Dean was hunting before he was 9 years old. A third grader… hunting werewolves while his peers were learning their times tables.

So for someone who was robbed of a real education by John Winchester, it’s amazing what his mind has done. He is very well read in both classics and modern literature. He remembers every complicated sigil he sees as well as Latin incantations. He is extremely gifted mechanically and his logic and interpersonal intelligence are off the charts. A little finger counting when doing mental math is anything but a weakness for someone who had to teach himself everything.
