Sorry if I missed anyone's question! Feel free to send it again, or send new questions and I'll answer them either directly or in another Q&A post :)
The campaign that Dear DnD Diary is based on ended yesterday. I can’t reveal what happened at the end because that’d spoil the comic, but let’s just say I feel both content and empty inside -- it’s been a great 2 and a half years. We played almost weekly, and it’s hard to imagine what it’s going to be like not playing DnD every Sunday.
P.S. I plan to continue drawing Dear DnD Diary as soon as I can, but it looks like it’ll be at least until next year (2020) before I can really get back into it because I’m so swamped with work.
As you might have noticed, Dear DnD Diary has been on hiatus for a month now. I probably should have made an info post earlier, but here we are. The good news is that the series isn’t cancelled and a new page will be released next week! If you’re interested in hearing more about the reasons for the break and the future of the series, read on.
First, I’d like to explain why there haven’t been any new pages. A few weeks ago my pet lizard Smaug stopped eating and seemed kinda.... floppy, so I took him to the vet. He had to have a surgery and they found a big carrot piece (the size of a coin) stuck in his intestines. He must have accidentally swallowed it whole when I was feeding him crickets. How he managed to do that is a mystery since he’s a very small bearded dragon.
In any case, before the surgery I was sure the lump would be a tumor or something and he’d die, so I was really sad. I’ve had depression for years and worrying for Smaug made it worse. The (many) trips to the vet took hours because the nearest vet specializing in exotic pets is over an hour’s drive away. With everything that was going on, I just couldn’t find the time and energy to work on the comic.
Luckily, Smaug’s surgery went well and he’s recovering. He’s eating insects again and climbing around in his terrarium.
Now that Smaug is feeling better, I’m also a bit more energetic. My actual job is game development, and I’ve managed to keep my current game project running. For the last few days I’ve also been able to draw the comic a little. I’m trying to build up a new buffer of pages so that even if I don’t have energy to draw a page every week I’ll have something to post (drawing a page usually takes 3-6 hours).
Now, for some exiting news about the future of the series!
I’ve been planning a physical Dear DnD Diary release and looking at some printing options for volume 1. I’ve found a printing service that seems really promising so I’d love to release the physical book asap! But before that I’ll have to draw enough pages so that the first volume ends in a way that makes sense. If I have enough time I’ll update some of the art of the older pages since it’s been a while since I drew them and there are things that bother me. The physical version will also feature extra art, like print-only extra strips and illustrations so that you’ll get more value if you decide to support me by buying the physical version! The book will be in full colour and probably shaped in an interesting way thanks to the non-standard format I chose for the comic.
I’ll print a small batch, maybe 100 volumes, to sell at Tracon (Finland) in the autumn. Any leftovers from the convention will be sold online once I figure out how to set up an online store for my merch. I’ll also be selling DnD themed acrylic charms and other cool stuff.
If the comic sells well online, I’ll be able to print another batch.
If you managed to read this far, wow! And thank you for your interest and support!
