“That and the fact that you have about a good 8 inches on me. So if you really wanted these,” she held up the Caramel Cobwebs and continued the hypothetical conversation they had started up, “you could probably fight me for them and win.” 

Gwen proceeded to eat another cobweb. Around her the Hogwarts train rattled as it chugged along. “Do you get to see your cousins a lot?”

He smirked, letting her take her victory because it seemed like she was enjoying them more than he would be, and seeing the smug pride on her face was satisfying, it made him feel like everything was back to normal. “I see them about as much as you’d expect while being at a boarding school.” Looking out of the window, he smiled warmly, kicking his feet up so they were resting on her lap as he watched the world spin by. “Basically grew up with them though, they’re an important part of my life. What about you, you got any cousins?”

“I think if there’s one thing I’ve made clear about myself, it’s that.”

“Maybe this time things will be different?”

"But it’s so unfair. I’m seventeen, I’m an adult in all legal rights. Can’t I make this decision about my life? I can’t just sit around and do nothing while people fight for the rights of my family and my friends, it’s killing me.”

Mary shrugged, thinking of the multitude of disgusting flavors she had spit out, “I get that, but sometimes chance is fun, and sometimes it is a necessary evil. You can have whatever kind of faulty pieces, but it does affect anything other than the taste in your mouth.” She tucked her feet under her, sitting cross legged in her seat. She watched Doc’s face as it contorted in disgust, laughter flooding from her. “You just have bad luck with jelly beans.”

He swallowed the bean with a grimace, wiping his mouth before sticking his tongue out at her. “Okay then bean queen, I understand your logic but screw the risk. Where’s Albert got to? I need some real muggle chocolate.”

“It’s not…that bad…right?”

I guess what happened must have scared a lot of people away from casual trips. You can hardly blame them.

Mary set the bag on the seat beside her. She saw the slight drop in cheer, but in the time it came, it went. The Hufflepuff girl sighed quietly, smiling back at Doc. “It’s all about chance. There is a certain adrenaline in trying something and not knowing what it will be.” Mary grinned wider, popping another jelly bean into her mouth. She physically relaxed as the sweet of peach flooded in, and stuck her tongue out at Caradoc. “It is a matter of being open to trying new things, Dearborn.”

Caradoc pulled a face, leaning back so he was resting his back against the window, his legs propped up on his case strewn on the floor in the middle of the compartment. “I’m open to new things but I also like comfort. I don’t think that it’s a bad thing to prefer to spend my spare money on something I know I’m actually going to enjoy.” Leaning over, he picked a sweet from the packet he was holding, eyeing it suspiciously before placing it in his mouth and almost choking on the hot chilly flavour.

And here I was thinking that that went without saying. You’re not getting rid of me that easily, Tonks.

Mary places another jelly bean in her mouth, trying not cringe at the less than enjoyable flavor, chewing it slowly as she stared at Doc. She swallowed hard, never taking her eyes away from his. “I would like to see you not eat like a baby dinosaur with a 10 bean challenge.” She holds the bag out to him across the train compartment, “here. You do it.”

Caradoc pulled a face at her suggestion, leaning far away from the bag. “God, no, never again. Not after last time.” A small pain tugged at him as he remembered that last time, the time when he’d eaten almost twenty beans in one go, had happened because he and AJ had been teasing each other about who was the bravest. He pushed away the twisting feeling in his stomach, pulling a smile onto his face as he looked up at Mary. “Why don’t you just eat decent sweets instead of spending your money on something that might taste vile?”
