𝙸 . hello ! this is an independent , mutuals only , canon divergent & low activity blog for antioch peverell from the harry potter franchise . i am in no way associated with jkr ( nor would i wish to be she’s awful ) or richard armitage . this blog is a sideblog to @cleavedsoul so all follows come from there .

𝙸𝙸 . i just dont like anything jkr did with the tale of the three brothers , so i’m claiming that ? i have a lot of Ideas , please don’t take them , i’ll know . 𝐂𝐇𝐄𝐂𝐊 𝐎𝐔𝐓 𝐌𝐘 𝐇𝐄𝐀𝐃𝐂𝐀𝐍𝐎𝐍𝐒 𝐇𝐄𝐑𝐄 ! i know they are long at times , but please .... anyway if you ever have questions about antioch just ask me because i love talking about my muses !

on the note of what’s going on here for plot points , this blog does not acknowledge cursed child or basically everything wrong with fantastic beasts , especially nagini that was horrid & i , an east asian ( chinese ) , will not stand for that ever . i dunk on jkr a lot because she’s rancid .

ANTIOCH PEVERELL , SOME INFO . 

the oldest son of godric gryffindor , a descendant of england’s most powerful giant clan — antioch peverell proudly held the title of ‘ heir of gryffindor ’ . of course , tutored by his own father , he proved to be an incredibly capable swordsman , although he also quickly showed that much like a lion , he was a little too prideful for his own good . distant from most people outside his family , he was seen as an unreachable paragon of gryffindor house by his classmates . 

at the age of fourteen , antioch developed an interest in wandlore , taking a summer apprenticeship with the famous ollivander family . antioch’s wands were sturdy & powerful . he learned to utilize rare cores & to combine them with the perfect wood to make for a wand that would bring out the best in the witch or wizard it chose . antioch’s wands are still in existence , they sit in ollivander’s shop . very rarely , if a wizard or witch is not matched with a wand made by ollivander , he will try one of antioch’s wands . there is a gorgeous yew wand that sits on display at ollivander’s , it is the only other wand in existence that has a thestral tail hair as a core . this wand became antioch’s wand , which will be discussed in a different post . 

antioch had no wand of his own prior to the elder wand . instead , he was known for channeling his magic through weaponry , be it his father’s sword or his own . watching him duel another wizard or witch was a sight to behold . he was incredibly skilled at nonverbal magic . 

antioch’s patronus was a grizzly bear . strong & a protector , but also capable of being very vicious , associated with his own personality . family oriented , but competitive & rough around the edges . 

antioch died after a violent battle with another wizard who had once attacked ignotus ( & yes , antioch holds grudges ) . antioch killed his opponent with the elder wand , saying that the same fate would meet anyone else who dared to challenge him or lay a hand on his family . the brother of the ( now deceased ) wizard killed antioch while he slept , stealing the elder wand . 

antioch was buried in godric’s hollow by his distraught father & mother . instead of becoming a ghost , his soul was revived to be the embodiment of war . a curse that death had placed on him without his knowledge . it is said that the side that antioch favors will win a war , so many have tried to earn his favor in times of strife . antioch had made a visit to godric’s hollow the night before voldemort was defeated for the first time . he wished to bestow a blessing on his youngest brother’s descendant , harry potter . 

beedle the bard made antioch out to be a villain . this was untrue . antioch’s rage was terrible to be at the receiving end of , but in the end , he desired power to protect his loved ones .

OKAY ACTUALLY BEFORE ANYTHING ELSE I WANT TO TALK ABOUT THE SWORD OF GRYFFINDOR ( & the other founders’ relics )

which , as we all know , is godric’s sword . harry uses it to slay the basilisk . it’s the mark of a true gryffindor to be able to wield it . now , most people assume that antioch was a dark wizard because he’s known for the elder wand , but this is HORRENDOUSLY UNTRUE . until his own death , antioch was in possession of his father’s sword . yeah , that one , the sword of gryffindor . & because of this , for everything else antioch was , he was also a true gryffindor — & not just because he was godric’s eldest son .

it’s not well known that the other founders also had weapons , for they were known for ‘ ravenclaw’s diadem ’ , ‘ hufflepuff’s cup ’ , ‘ slytherin’s locket ’ . the truth is , each founder left a weapon & a relic . it was the 1000s , everyone was fighting , everyone KNEW how to fight , so it makes sense . on that note , godric’s weapon was the sword of gryffindor , his relic is actually the sorting hat , which was once a hat he used to wear ( proof that godric had a very good sense of character ) . salazar left behind the locket & his own dragonfire blade . rowena was a skilled archer & had the diadem . helga , for as gentle as she was , was very skilled with the axe & of course her relic is the cup . much like godric’s sword , the other weapons could arguably be wielded by someone who had the mark of a true member of their house , meaning the definition set by the founder . fun fact , no modern slytherin has ever wielded salazar’s blade . the last one to use it was a certain merlin ambrosius . afterward , the dragonfire blade vanished & hasn’t been seen since . 

anyway , the point is , antioch was not a dark wizard , he was very much a true gryffindor . many people would’ve pegged him for a slytherin , but beyond ambition , he valued protecting his family , took great pride in his bravery & battle prowess . that pride is very much reflected in his story , as he stares down death & says he wants a wand suited for the wizard who has conquered death . in comparison to his brothers ( cadmus , who was depressed & asked for essentially the philosopher’s stone to bypass equivalence & revive his dead wife . ignotus , who flat out asked for a cloak so he could hide from death ) , antioch was the lionhearted one . 

unfortunately , with the way beedle spun the story , this isn’t necessarily the thing people associate antioch with , & honestly he’s sorta hurt , because he did take great pride in being gryffindor’s heir . 

& of course , harry being descended from ignotus , the only brother to have any living heirs , gets that title by default . if antioch had a surviving bloodline , his bloodline would likely have the privilege of being ‘ heir of gryffindor ’ … also , the gaunts are not related to the peverells unless someone from ignotus’ bloodline married in , which is unlikely .

ok so are the peverells like dead sorta , they’re amortal . they can interact with the world like living beings , but they carry some really ominous vibes , y’know . so they sure aren’t ghosts , but it’s like … the feeling that they’re not … alive … & they’re not dead , it’s just sorta … w e i r d . i’ll write more when … i have more brainpower

𝚃𝙷𝙴 𝚁𝙰𝙲𝙴 𝙾𝙵 𝙶𝙸𝙰𝙽𝚃𝚂 

a proud race , giants were once quite common in the wizarding world , & even known among non - magical communities . living mostly near mountains , they rarely ventured to see any other groups that were not other giant clans , mostly due to the fact that they saw no reason to ally with anything other than … other giants . at times , giants would interact with humans , magical or non magical — 

they have been known to have territorial battles with mountain troll clans , the casualties caused to both trolls & giants brought the two groups to a very shaky alliance & truce . 

oftentimes , people mistake giants & trolls for being related , this is untrue . giants are organic beings that have live offspring , whereas trolls are made from the earth itself .

pure giants ( as in a giant born from other giants , rather than a half - giant or someone with giants’ blood ) are capable of magic , although they are not capable of using wands . instead , they are known for ritualistic dances where they are said to be able to command the earth ( mostly trees or the ground ) around them . this form of magic & dance can also manipulate metals , making it very hard to attack giants with metal weapons ( hence why trolls , who use blunt stone weapons , can hurt giants , but someone with a sword or an axe would likely have that weapon bent out of shape by a giant’s dance before they could strike ) . giants are vulnerable to magic ( spells cast from a wand ) , which is why they don’t like it used against them , but they can appreciate it as an art .

the gurg of the giant clan is also known to non - giants as holding the equivalent rank of a king or queen . however , unlike a king or queen , the offspring of the gurg is not guaranteed to also become the gurg . giants do have a tendency to pick their leaders based on physical strength . it is true that giants favor those who are larger , because for a giant , that is a mark of power . ‘ the larger the body , the greater amount of the energy of the earth ’ . to have the gurg pay attention at all ( if you are not a giant or of giants’ blood ) , a person must display a feat of great physical power , or if not that , they must dance for the gurg . while gifts are nice , that’s not how to win the giant clan’s favor . 

since giants do have their own language , a translator is needed if a person wants to go to a giant clan & the giants there aren’t fluent in the human language . but , on that note , giants are not stupid at all .

Albus Dumbledore thought it was unlikely that the Elder Wand was actually made by Death, and assumed that it may have been created by the eldest of the three Peverell brothers, Antioch. However, Antioch did not possess the Elder Wand for very long: After killing a rival wizard in a duel shortly after creating the wand, Antioch drunkenly boasted of the wand’s powers. He was murdered in his sleep that night and another wizard took possession of the wand

uh ok i mean antioch is cool but he did not make a wand … that uh 

The Elder Wand was the most powerful wand in existence. Its owner could have used it to cast spells more powerful than any believed to be magically possible. […]

So even if you were disarmed while carrying it, even if you lost a fight while carrying it, it has developed an affinity with you that it won’t give up easily. If, however, a wand is won, properly won in an adult duel, then a wand may switch allegiance … However, the Elder Wand knows no loyalty except to strength. It’s completely unsentimental. It will only go where the power is. So if you win, then you’ve won the wand. You don’t need to kill with it. But … almost inevitably, it attracts wizards who are prepared to kill and who will kill. And also it attracts wizards like Voldemort who confuse being prepared to murder with strength.”

“The secret of the elder wand is that it’s more sentient than any other. It can identify the caster of any spell that touches it and keeps tally of which wizard has beaten which, giving its allegiance to the one it judges the victor. Physical possession is irrelevant.”

… yeah he did nOT make the elder wand . but antioch’s wandmaking should be discussed … because it isn’t that he didn’t make some really OP wands :) he did . just not this one . on top of that , antioch with his giants’ blood arguably would have a harder time using a wand since giants can’t use wands . which is also a testament to how OP antioch was himself , but not as a wand - wielding wizard , but as a craftsman & arguably as a person in general ??

but what’s wild is the horsemen themselves are ,,, arguably true neutrals bc war & plague & famine & death don’t take into consideration who suffers or who doesn’t , but antioch as a person was like lawfully chaotic ( good ) , always trust him to be unpredictable …. but he cares he’s just going to show it in the most destructive way possible , most likely

TIME TO DISSECT EVERYTHING WRONG WITH ANTIOCH’S PART OF TALE OF THE THREE BROTHERS 

So the oldest brother, who was a combative man, asked for a wand more powerful than any in existence: a wand that must always win duels for its owner, a wand worthy of a wizard who had conquered Death! So Death crossed to an elder tree on the banks of the river, fashioned a wand from a branch that hung there, and gave it to the oldest brother.

guys . death doesn’t give shit out for free . & antioch , of giants’ blood ( arguably taking the most of the traits compared to his brothers ) , was always seen fighting using his father’s sword . why on earth would he want a wand for himself . what beedle leaves out is death made antioch prove himself by uh . making a wand on his own . which was like death trying to tell him he was a fucking idiot because he could already harness that sort of power , but antioch … is prideful . he wanted to flex on death even more than he wanted the wand , which uh . really was his downfall there .

The first brother traveled on for a week or more, and reaching a distant village, sought out a fellow wizard with whom he had a quarrel. Naturally with the Elder Wand as his weapon, he could not fail to win the duel that followed. 

antioch’s damage with this wizard was literally … a 20 year long grudge against some dude who attacked his brothers when they were all kids . it was … kids attack other kids & antioch is just uh . vengeful . he did not just pull out the elder wand , he uh … started with the sword . because why rely on a wand … but yes the killing blow was done with the elder wand since antioch ended up disarmed of the sword & just decided ok it’s time for this dude to perish i’ve been playing with my food long enough ,

Leaving his enemy dead upon the floor, the oldest brother proceeded to an inn, where he boasted loudly of the powerful wand he had snatched from Death himself, and of how it made him invincible.

this part’s fairly legit , although antioch only said he beat death , & people were like what the fuck is your damage with death & why would u do that ,  & antioch’s answer was essentially ‘ because i’m powerful ’ , which is just … dude tone down the pride . just a little .

That very night, another wizard crept upon the oldest brother as he lay, wine-sodden, upon his bed. The thief took the wand and, for good measure, slit the oldest brother’s throat.

ok no one actually knows how antioch died , other than it was bloody . antioch had asked for a wand that could win battles & he only ever used it ONCE . otherwise it was his father’s sword or the wand he made for himself . what is true is that the elder wand vanished & antioch’s body was found … & there were signs of a struggle . he did NOT die in his sleep , he went down fighting . that’s honestly his only comfort ? he died a warrior , even if in the end he was bested , & then of course he was turned into the embodiment of war itself , so uh . hm . 

of course , death often asked antioch if he was angry at the fate that he had been given , & he would always say that he only regretted dragging his brothers in , but he did become some primordial force himself … so his only complaint was … his brothers only went along with it because he told them to , so he hopes death will let them go ???

ok ok so actually about antioch’s wandmaking 

antioch liked contradictory things , combinations that most people would think would make no sense , but his method of combining them actually made for very powerful wands , & due to this , all wands made by antioch are known to bring out the full potential of their wielder . for better or worse . like the elder wand , they are all incredibly sentient , but they were also made by someone with giants’ blood , someone who could understand the earth , so there’s that special property as well . antioch’s wands are in fact sold at ollivander’s , since antioch studied under the ollivander family . 

his own wand is yew & thestral tail hair . yew is said to be the wand wood that marks a wizard or witch as master over death . thestrals are beings that can only be seen by someone who has seen death or watched someone die . so that one on its own is like death & undeath . antioch’s wand became a yew tree over his grave , but to use wood from that tree would also make for an exceptionally powerful wand …

quirinus quirrell’s wand , alder & unicorn hair , is made by antioch . alder is suited for incredibly powerful magic , the mark of a wizard or witch who will leave their name known in the world . unicorn hair is known for consistency , but certainly not for strength , pairing it with a wood that was essentially known for being sorta OP made the wand perfect for someone who had great power , but also a great gentleness . this is one of the last wands antioch manufactured .

antioch was also very fond of causing reverse spells . as a duelist himself , he learned that priori incantatem essentially caused the effect of a fight to the death , or until one person managed to break away ( he likes the gold death cage he’s FIGHTY ) . while he never was able to experience it for himself with his own wand , if antioch was to battle someone with the elder wand , the effect would happen , as his wand has a tail hair from the same thestral death chose . 

he enjoyed using uncommon cores & he used them magnificently . the one disaster occurring with a wand made by antioch was sir cadogan’s blackthorn & troll whisker wand . not that the wand wasn’t suited for cadogan , but the core , leading to a ‘ combustible ’ nature eventually weakened the blackthorn wood . it should be noted that this wand was one of the first that antioch made when he began his apprenticeship with the ollivander family at the age of 14 . 

antioch manufactured about three hundred wands , but they are incredibly picky . still , they have been in the ollivander family’s shop for centuries …

𝙷𝙴𝚁𝙱𝙾𝙻𝙾𝙶𝚈 𝚆𝙰𝚂 𝙽𝙴𝚅𝙴𝚁 𝙷𝙸𝚂 𝙵𝙸𝙽𝙴𝚂𝚃 𝚂𝚄𝙱𝙹𝙴𝙲𝚃 , this lion - warrior of a time long gone ( war - bringer , master of death in his own right ) . that had always been cadmus’ area of expertise , but ... in the end , it certainly didn’t stop antioch from wandering there nonetheless . he’d learned , eventually , the names of the trees & the magic they could create — so perhaps it was simply ... ah , yes , he was here to reminisce . 

a sound , he turns to face a student clad with robes trimmed with yellow , the unmistakable badger upon her breast — i’m sorry if i’ve disturbed you , she speaks & oh , how very hufflepuff she is ! for helga’s voice had a similar mein , warm chocolate on a cold winter day — ❛ ah , i am usually not here , so it’s purely coincidence ... ❜ 

❛ my brother used to spend much time here . he was always fond of herbology & potions — i only learned to appreciate the former when i took interest in wandlore . even then ... it’s mostly trees , not this , ❜ gesture to her hands , her little leather bag — ❛ are you collecting for your professor , or simply for yourself ? you have quite the assortment of herbs there . ❜

The being known as Death, or the Spirit of Death is the embodiment of the universal phenomenon marking the end of physical life, and may or may not literally exist. The most well-known account of the entity is titled "The Tale of the Three Brothers", and was made famous by Beedle the Bard. According to this story, he was the one who witnessed the three Peverell brothers defy Death by successfully crossing a deadly and dangerous river using magic. 

wh ... ok i guess i really have to address this one hU H . because beedle did NOT witness this , considering the peverells were long since dead by the time beedle was born in the 15th century . antioch was born ... c. 1000 CE ... that’s 400 years ... prior .... 

but , the story of the peverells had been passed down , because yes , what they did was legendary , & what they became , equally so . but , thanks to beedle , most people don’t know the peverells are the sons of godric gryffindor , nor do they know what time period this even happened in . no one’s questioned anything , which is a real shame , huh .

preferences in magic & magic usage ! 

or , what does antioch like doing in magic anyway

of hogwarts subjects , his favorites were defense against the dark arts ( salazar’s ) & transfiguration ( his father’s ) . antioch has always been the sorta fighty type , would go to war for his family , LITERALLY KILLED SOMEONE who tried to attack ignotus & by this i mean it was like 20 years ago antioch , you were 10 when it happened & iggy probably doesn’t even remember it probably & you tracked the man down to kILL HIM ? with the elder wand ??? anyway , antioch was very into the dueling magic , because that was his thing . fighting . rule #1 is don’t talk about fight club , not that hogwarts had one ... but if it did ... antioch was the champion . 

antioch was a wandmaker ! so he got really into wandlore when he was a teenager , & yes , he was tutored by the ollivander family . i mentioned in the elder wand post that antioch’s wands are all made to bring out the full abilities of their chosen witch or wizard , & so the wands he made are highly prized . 

antioch made his own wand , when he eventually had one ( before , he was using a sword to channel his magic , because wands weren't durable in war , this was like ... prior to 1066 CE ) . antioch's own wand was in fact yew & thestral tail hair , 10 1/2" . this wand's core causes many people to believe antioch manufactured the elder wand , he did not . death was not going to allow him to combine elder with thestral tail hair , because that is a very , very strong combination . by wandlore , yew wands are notable in wizards or witches with power of life & death , even moreso than any other wand . combined with the thestral tail hair , antioch's own wand was just about as strong as the elder wand , although it was made by a mortal , so it didn't have the exact same powers . still , it is an easy mistake to make when looking at history . antioch's yew wand was buried with his body . there is a tree that has grown over his grave .really , the point of this is anything that he learned magically from his father , or anything that made for good combat magic , was tio's thing . because he was always ready for a fight thanks for coming to my tedtalk .

OBLIGATORY POST ABOUT THE ELDER WAND TO FOLLOW UP ON THE ANTIOCH POST ! 

the elder wand , named such for being exactly what’s on the label . a wand of elder wood , it has a thestral tail hair core . this is death’s wand . there is a controversy about whether or not antioch actually made the wand . he didn’t . however , he did make a wand of yew & thestral tail hair , which was death’s challenge to him . 

death never just handed out gifts . while antioch did ask for a wand that would give him the power to protect his family & to strike down those who would wish them harm , death essentially said ‘ make one yourself ’ . so , antioch made the yew - thestral tail hair wand . death bestowed the elder wand to antioch as a gift . until the violent battle with the wizard who had once attacked ignotus , antioch used the yew wand if he used a wand at all . he kept the elder wand on his person . 

it seems that the elder wand functions much like antioch’s wands , bringing out the full power a person possesses , even if it is not being actively used ( however , very few people could bring out the wand’s full potential , with antioch & albus dumbledore being the only wielders who ever managed ) . this made many covet it . greedy individuals believed antioch to be unworthy of it , if he never used it . 

a person who uses the elder wand out of selfish greed or desire for power will die within a month of casting the first spell , as the wand will backfire on them . antioch did not die because of the elder wand , he died because he was murdered , the wand had no part in that , another vengeful wizard did .

the oldest son of godric gryffindor , a descendent of england’s most powerful giant clan — antioch peverell proudly held the title of ‘ heir of gryffindor ’ . of course , tutored by his own father , he proved to be an incredibly capable swordsman , although he also quickly showed that much like a lion , he was a little too prideful for his own good . distant from most people outside his family , he was seen as an unreachable paragon of gryffindor house by his classmates . 

at the age of fourteen , antioch developed an interest in wandlore , taking a summer apprenticeship with the famous ollivander family . antioch’s wands were sturdy & powerful . he learned to utilize rare cores & to combine them with the perfect wood to make for a wand that would bring out the best in the witch or wizard it chose . antioch’s wands are still in existence , they sit in ollivander’s shop . very rarely , if a wizard or witch is not matched with a wand made by ollivander , he will try one of antioch’s wands . there is a gorgeous yew wand that sits on display at ollivander’s , it is the only other wand in existence that has a thestral tail hair as a core . this wand became antioch’s wand , which will be discussed in a different post . 

antioch had no wand of his own prior to the elder wand . instead , he was known for channeling his magic through weaponry , be it his father’s sword or his own . watching him duel another wizard or witch was a sight to behold . he was incredibly skilled at nonverbal magic . 

antioch’s patronus was a grizzly bear . strong & a protector , but also capable of being very vicious , associated with his own personality . family oriented , but competitive & rough around the edges . 

antioch died after a violent battle with another wizard who had once attacked ignotus ( & yes , antioch holds grudges ) . antioch killed his opponent with the elder wand , saying that the same fate would meet anyone else who dared to challenge him or lay a hand on his family . the brother of the ( now deceased ) wizard killed antioch while he slept , stealing the elder wand . 

antioch was buried in godric’s hollow by his distraught father & mother . instead of becoming a ghost , his soul was revived to be the embodiment of war . a curse that death had placed on him without his knowledge . it is said that the side that antioch favors will win a war , so many have tried to earn his favor in times of strife . antioch had made a visit to godric’s hollow the night before voldemort was defeated for the first time . he wished to bestow a blessing on his youngest brother’s descendant , harry potter . 

beedle the bard made antioch out to be a villain . this was untrue . antioch’s rage was terrible to be at the receiving end of , but in the end , he desired power to protect his loved ones .
