ㅤ similar? grimm blinks quickly, eyes narrow in on the other's form, switch cameras on her temple⸻ strange heat signals confirm their assumptions correct. they both had cold spots where they shouldn't, their fingers pointed in places that should be fleshy. alas, the stranger's cheeks looks firm; no wrinkles around the mouth or on the forehead. their voice sounds... young.
ㅤ "help me with what?" polite, palms pressed against the sides of her pants. heat vision can't read affiliations; pressing her temple again would be rude.

" ㅤher words die in her throat as she looks back down, once she noticed the doe - like eyes staring back up at her from chantasia's place on the floor. it's not the first time that she's been rendered speechless by this woman, and she certainly doesn't think that it will be the last. especially not if she keeps doing stuff like this. ㅤcain almost feels herself jump at the first touch of a warm hand. ㅤ" i - i... i can check up on you more often, if you would like ? are you feeling ill ? or... or in pain ? perhaps... " she cuts herself off. gulps once her mouth feels excessively dry. " perhaps... well, you know what i mean, surely ? " ㅤshe likely does not, for her sentence has hardly made a lick of sense. cain's face surely must be much warmer than her hands by now. she hopes that it doesn't show too much. maybe if she hopes hard enough the blush won't spread far enough. but also, maybe that is all just wishful thinking. ㅤ" ... i don't know where you live. " ㅤgreat going, cain. very impressive charm you got going there.
ㅤ "i know what you mean." her voice low, chantasia watches the mortician's eyes as she reaches for her other hand, pressing both between her palms. squeezing her fingers. rubbing her hands. it's a unconventional romantic gesture, one that's not romantic in the slightest. "but it's a matter of the heart, dr. maddox. humans are social creatures. when we are sequestered away in a little white room, it's natural to long for some company. i think you make very nice company."
ㅤ cain makes chantasia laugh with her last thought. "i can't remember my address either! i assumed you had it somewhere in my file⸻ surely it's not hard for you to obtain." she's confident she could point out the apartment building if someone showed her a picture. the arrival of her friend could not come soon enough; chantasia has so many questions with answers that feel so close. hidden in plain sight.
ㅤ she looks back up at cain, shaking her hair behind her shoulders. "you could visit me at home. you can come watch me dance or listen to me sing."
ㅤ that much she remembers. lyrics written into her marrow, routines in her tendons. it must be the important part.
her answers seem to come only after careful consideration, larry encouragingly nodding along as he jots them down. even the unexpected mention of pyroar with their pack leaders, the nonhunters, with ample time to lounge around, he can see. larry's little survey is turning out more varied answers than the easily grasped ones he anticipated. it's quite insightful.
he suspects that if she were to continue, her answer might surprise him. only it hangs around unspoken. he glances up, considering if he already knows the answer. then glances back down, choosing instead to chalk it up as a name half-forgotten from disuse, trapped at the tip of her tongue.
"snorlax. komala. a pampered persian... I catch myself envying them, you know. like sometimes I think I'd like to be as carefree as that too, but..." he heaves a weary sigh as he reclines as far back as his seat will allow, draping his notepad across his eyes. a set of window blinds, a mask for sleep, "it'd be only a matter of time before someone finds a way to make that into something productive, too. like how pokémon like snorlax and slaking so often battle. would it even be restful, I wonder...? "

ㅤ what a curious survey. her chin lifts & tilts to peek at what pages show through his fingers as he decompresses into his seat⸻ find any answers not her own, any questions spoken to others of similar nature. baby pokémon sleep a lot too, toxel & cleffa, the avian hatchlings in park nests she always hopes to catch awake.
ㅤ larry's a very curious man. he looks too sullen for whatever wonders he has. her neck relaxes, her chin back in her palms, a foot swings beneath their table. a transparent mystery, that's what chantasia chalks this up to be. "i've always been a little wary of battling snorlax," she laughs, "they have so much power with so little ease... it must come from all the energy they've saved up from sleeping. they're quick when they're awake."
ㅤ she adjusts her glasses, "i read an article about snorlax who sleep on little islands. the other pokémon on the islands bring them food so they grow strong. i guess the pokémon are attracted to snorlax's energy when it sleeps, i can't remember. some researchers are trying to study it."
ㅤ sleep is already made into something productive.
ㅤ "wouldn't that be a nice job to have? to rest with pokémon every day?" she grins, "is your survey to help with your interview for a position?"
happy summer time. here's my ocs if they were on love island
aphid: a bombshell. the audience chooses who should go on a date with her as her first introduction. they do this because she struggles to approach people meaningfully. doesn't make for good TV so most people forget she's there but no one has anything bad to say about her. she's nice, just there. she might make it to casa but she will probably stay loyal to her original couple even if they don't— that will be her downfall.
chantasia: casa girl or bombshell. consistently approached by other contestants. she gives them just enough to keep them happy but keeps her cards close to her chest. she is more often pursued than she pursues. gets along with the other women very well, adopted into the group. very bubbly and happy and never too bothered if someone is shady for her. laughs at inappropriate times. she is never in a consistent connection but she is a fan favorite so she can make it to the end of the show but won't win.
fox: bombshell. causes a stir and breaks up a pretty prominent couple but the other person will probably find their way back to their original couple. somehow floats along as single in the villa until casa. thoroughly explores and brings someone back. was in a prominent friend group but broke off due to something minor. won't last long after casa.
gravy: OG girl. very boisterous and loud and unapologetically herself. drops connections very quickly if she feels disrespected and holds her ground. she won't go back to someone who doesn't treat her with respect. dumped from the villa very unexpectedly. blows up outside of the villa.
grimm: OG girl. would probably stay coupled up with whoever she is initially paired with ep1 for most of the season. great at physical challenges. takes a long time to want to kiss someone, avoids kissing in challenges for a very long time. people root for her because she's genuine but she excuses the wrong behaviors. will be voted out in her couple because the audience disapproves of her partner. will break up two months after leaving the show.
nepheline: early bombshell. really shakes things up and may recouple once or twice but is beloved by most cast members and audience. she is a little manipulative and easily upset but people chalk it up to her "playing the game". she would give her trust to someone who will upset her and they will make it to the finale because they have a few shooters who won't acknowledge that there's something sketchy going on.
sesil: OG. very casual and chill, it's hard to tell whether or not they are actually feeling something genuine for the person they're with but they have a very solid foundation. friends with everyone and won't explore outside of it— maybe only if a bombshell approaches but they will still be thinking about their original couple. comedic relief for the show. easy favorite. will also blow up outside the villa. always in or around the pool.
ㅤon the one hand, it's very relieving to see chantasia's personality show more and more the healthier she gets, on the other hand... her cheeky tendencies do seem to be making cain understand her even less. she seems to be cheeky and stubborn, a combination that cain is definitely not equipped to know how to deal with. ㅤshe's even barking from her spot on the ground, for crying out loud ! ㅤgreen eyes meet brown hues at the sound, confusion evidently written all over her features as she attempts to discern if she heard that right. ... now aren't you full of surprises ? ㅤ" ... thank you. " she says softly as her hand shakily extends for the papers handed over. it's still cold underneath the leather, her control wavers. " you could say that, in a way. shouldn't you still be resting ? don't get me wrong, it pleases me that you feel well enough to be up and about, i just don't wish to see you strain yourself. "
ㅤ "dr. maddox, it's my throat that's injured, not my knees." she casts a glance toward her briefcase, its interior & corners⸻ largely without scratches. it's professional, it's neat, her papers not so. lots of papers are fickle, it's hard to keep them contained unless they're bound.
ㅤ chantasia leans back against the table beside cain, audience to cain as she fumbles with her papers, fingers stiff. there's luxury in this moment. chantasia's well enough to be on her feet, cain is patient enough to slow her roll. gentle fingers touch the inside of cain's elbow, smooth down her forearm to reach her hand.
ㅤ "thanks to you, i'm feeling much better. i get so lonely without you to check up on me." her fingers curl around cain's. guide her hand away from the papers for just a second so chantasia can press her hand between warm palms. stiff because of the cold⸻ maybe she washed her hands with cold water, maybe the mortuary is far colder than her room.
ㅤ "will you find some time to visit me once i'm discharged?"
"when you think of a pokémon who's always sleeping, who comes to mind? " for chantasia!
ㅤ "always sleeping..." chin in her palms, her lips purse to ponder... surprisingly, her noctowl is active during the day. sluggish, but moving. some wild noctowl hunt during the day for hoothoot still in the nest. & decidueye are very light sleepers.
ㅤ "i'd say... a slaking. or snorlax. i've seen some very sleepy pyroar, too." her answers stall after each other, one more she neglects to name. chantasia smiles to herself, searching eyes find their way back to larry. "i think i know one more who might like to sleep more often. what pokémon do you think are always sleeping?"
"the best thing to do with troublesome tasks is to just get them over with. agreed? " for gravy!
ㅤ in most circumstances, yes. trouble piles up faster when you ignore it. & sometimes, trouble's just under your nose where you least expect it. "it depends on your goal."
ㅤ "if you want to complete the task so you don't have to worry about it, agreed. the quickest way to get your way out of trouble is through it. but if you don't want to be tasked with trouble, you put it off for as long as possible. then, future trouble will be redirected toward someone deemed more competent."
ㅤ trouble has its virtues: challenges are a means to overcome so it won't bother you down the line. growth is attractive toward those who divvy out trouble⸻ its a means of promotion for those concerned. you keep your nose down in the shit they give you & you might just sniff out diamonds.
ㅤ but sometimes all that trouble piles up. you can't manage it all on your own like others want to believe. & sometimes letting others down, failure, or disappointment is enough to save face & work yourself to the bone. sometimes it's healthier to utilize that helplessness.
ㅤ "you look like you've been given too many troublesome tasks. i'll pass."
