When will we see the Uber Miniatures tabletop game?
It’s something we’ve talked about. I mean, any Uber merch is problematic. We’ve only done one T-shirt, for example, and that was an allied US T-shirt, and even that wasn’t something we were really sure about.
But miniatures are something different. I guess the problem is for a tabletop miniatures boardgame is that you really should just do it as an expansion for an already existent WW2 model range. Also there’s a problem of scale - Panzermensch and the double-activation units are a tactical unit, while a Battleship is more of a strategic scale weapon.
I suspect the best way to do an Uber game would be a strategic level world map game.
Or a card game, like xenoshyft/lengendary... I just want action figures!!!!
Review - Insane Tales From the Dead #3
Dying Breath - 4.5 out of 5.0
What a breath of rotted air this anthology is. At a time when it seems like most “Horror Comics” are just someone fighting a demon or monster, a gem like this is created to remind us of what the genre is all about. Starting off the collection of terror tales is frightful poetic introduction called “Rise from the Grave”. A grim reminder of the death that will consume us all, but also a great way to start the book. The words flow like honey into my brain, with the sorrow that will befall each and everyone of us. But fear not, as it comes to reveal to us readers that this is just the introduction and at the end we meet our most unfriendly host The Grim Pale Faced One.
Next comes the story “When the Devil Walked in Dower”. Based on true events, this tale tells us about mysterious footprints that were found in England in the 1800′s. With GORE-Geous artwork by Nikos Malk, this one will leave chills running down my spine for years to come. I think I need to setup some video cameras around my house incase the Devil comes back. “The Old Lady and the Lake”, another tale based on true events, comes next. This tragic tale speaks of an old Indian doctor (love the nod to the Old Witch), who has lost her grand daughter, to the very colonists she helps heal in the 1700′s. Through black magic, and one painful ass eye surgery, she sees the truth and gains her revenge. But be warned, the curse is still present, and will take those who dare to tread the waters of the lake.
“Death Smack” is the next troublesome tales. In this one we are introduced to Dr. Rendevil, our new Horror Host, as we follow the plight that the Grim Pale Faced One deals with in his eternal life of collecting souls. The story here is to show us how lonely and miserable the life of the Reaper can be. These pages ooze with death and decay, and are all beautifully depicted with some dark ass inks.
Is insanity a living hell, or is hell an eternal bout of insanity? “The House of Night” poses this very question. Are we to believe that Orville was just a loon or that his lunacy lead him to meet the Devil himself. In this terror tale we follow as a man “dreams” of going insane, or is that what we are to think. This one has a very “Jacob’s Ladder” style feel to it.
At last we come to a more delightful collection in the book called “Dr. Rendevil’s Tribute to the Gashly Crumb Tinies”. This collection of 26 panels breaks down the Alphabet with one gruesome death after another. I have to admit I am partial to the letter D (buy the damn book to find out why). A story like this is a good break from what has come before and proves to be a frightening pallet cleanser for what is to come next.
Time to dive back into the insanity, and what better way to do that than with the story “Three Rings and the Stone Circle”. A lovecraft-ian tale told in rhyme, makes this one easy to pass the time. Well I tried to play along. So this one could be one of my favorites of the bunch. It’s told in a strange way, that is not a straight forward story like the rest. Instead it uses a pattern of 3′s to bring to you the sense of horror you are after. It’s told in a loose flowing style, like a poem. It does standout from the rest because of this.
What would a Halloween Horror book be without a Christmas tale? “Santa’s All Hallows Evil... On Slaughter Street” was an unexpected surprise. I did not expect to find the jolly old bastard in this book, but here he is. So how do the reindeer fly? Well they obviously need the Fly Juice that is provided by the Devil, duh. Laughs and gore follow as Santa has to collect the first 12 souls on his naughty list for the Devil in order to get the Fly Juice. This is a nice light heated B-Movie style tale that had me wanting more.
There was no better way for this book to wrap up than with “The Price of Living”. As I mentioned at the start of this review, “Rise from the Grave” reminded us of the inevitable, death, but it also shows the rebirth of our Horror Host. So to go out, we have another tale reminding us of what is to come for us all. It’s done in a different style, with in your face reality. A perfect finish. Following the stories are 39 GORE-Geous pin-up pages. No story to review, but the eye-gasms that these artists presented are not to be missed. So let’s sum this one up: Insane Tales from the Dead is what I like to refer to as an Indie Splatter Horror Comic. Now when I say splatter, I don’t technically mean blood and guts, which are present of course, but I am mainly referring to the overall art style of the book. You will see a lot of 70′s and 80′s underground comics that have this feel to them. The art is not crisp and clean, the stories are rough and gritty. And that is what is so appealing about this book. It takes the concept of a comic, and just makes it dirty. It’s filthy, it’s disturbing and it’s a down right damn good read. This reminds me of what Horror Comics should be and what I love about the genre itself. A collection of GORE-Geous artwork with dark inks that suck you into their void, and have you turning the pages to see what gross conception the artist has next coming next. Tales that don’t leave you feeling good about yourself, creating a pit of emptiness in your mind and making it bigger and bigger as you continue reading. That is a true Horror Comic, and Insane Tales From the Dead brings it.

Remembering Gary Reed
I’ve been sitting here at work all morning dreading my lunch break, as I knew I was going to need to share this news with you. Now that the time has come I’m doing my best to hold back the emotions as they try to take over. This morning the world lost a true leader in the comic book world. A family lost a loving husband and father, and I lost a great friend. Gary Reed meant a lot to me, and a lot to a great number of people. I am going to try to not ramble on about his history in comics, it is all out there on the internet for you to see, but instead I going to do my best to focus on what Gary meant to me. When I first got into Horror Comics, I fell in love with Deadworld. The cream of the crop when it comes to Zombie Comic Books, which was eventually published and written by Gary Reed . In 2010 I met Gary for the first time at C2E2, and while I was trying not to gush over meeting him, he was happy as can be to meet a fan like me. From that point forward a friendship was formed. The bond grew stronger as we emailed back and forth talking about Deadworld, Saint Germaine and his other various works. I thought I was the coolest person around, talking to him and having him respond to me. As time went on, and I started to do more in the Comic Book World, I became friends with Rafael Nieves. Raf had worked with Gary numerous times and the two were very close friends, hell they were practically brothers. Through my friendship with Raf, I only got closer to knowing Gary. I remember the three of us having dinner one night after a show in Indiana. No comic talk at all, just shooting the shit about life. That is how you judge your friendship with someone, not talking shop. Gary cared to know about me and my life, and I his. I would run into Gary at shows, and even made it out to attend Detroit FanFare one year. It’s funny to think back now, because I seriously think I attended most of these shows to just hang with my friend. Sure I was there to talk to others, cover the shows and what not, but these were the places where we could get together to just see each other and hang out. As Comic Related's Chuck Moore and I always said, this is our extended family reunion. It was at the second C2E2 in 2011 where Gary, Raf, Dirk Manning and Cullen Bunn were all my guests at the panel I hosted on Horror Comics. What I remember most from this was how when the panel was over Gary ran out of the room then returned a couple minutes later saying “Damn I had to pee that whole time!” Sorry Gary, I had to share that. As the past few years went by I had the honor to work on projects with Gary. I created websites for him and his properties. I had no problem lending a hand when I could, but had no idea what it would eventually lead to. In 2011 Gary asked me to write the forward for Deadworld Classics Volume 2. I was floored and could not believe he would ask me to do this. Here I am being asked to write the forward for my favorite comic book, and being asked by one of the best comic book writers of all time. I remember how many revisions we had to do on it because I was just gushing on it left and right. Gary knew my love for the material and had no problem letting me be a part of it. Since then I worked with him on the Deadworld Trading Cards, the new Deadworld Archive books, the Deadworld Coloring Book, and so much more Caliber material that was going to be re-released soon. Gary always trusted my vision on things, and let me design them as I wanted. Our friendship grew and grew over all this time, and it’s crazy to think now that it was only 6 years short. I never had the honor of meeting his family, but I feel like I know them. Gary would tell me about his wife and girls all the time. We would joke about how my daughter was coming into the world, while his youngest was moving out. His family meant so much to him, and I don’t think that limited to just immediate family. His comic family mattered too. When you look back on Gary’s life and see all of the names of the people he worked with you will be amazed. We would always joke about the Deadworld curse, as an artist who would work on the book would be called away by the Big 2 before finishing, and he would not stand in their way. He was a launching pad for careers, and never stood in the way. He loved the industry, it meant so much to him. I looked up to Gary, like no other. He did it right, and I will never know how he truly juggled it all. Family, Friends, Work , Comics, A line of Deadworld Soda and Chips, a Publishing Company, Toy Lines and we were even working on a Deadworld Card Game. People will call him a Mentor, and he was. People will call him a Leader, and he was. People will call him a Pioneer, and he was. But I will always call Gary Reed, a Friend.
