I have better shots of this location, but this is outside the Coca Cola Mansion in Bay St. Louis. It seems appropriate to post at least something to give an excellent idea of the size of the main building.
I'm heartbroken that someone would vandalize this property. I have learned more about the history since the fire, but that doesn't help the fact that it was set ablaze. I hope that no one was injured during the event fighting the flames, and I hope that no one was inside during the fire.
That being said, this was the front entrance to the mansion before the fire.
BAY ST. LOUIS -- The Hancock County Fire Marshal's Office spent Friday investigating the cause of the late-night fire that destroyed the guest home on the Coca-Cola Plantation property Thursday.
Fire crews received a call about 9:40 p.m. and by the time firefighters from Bay St. Louis, Kiln and Bayside Park arrived at the Jordan River Drive plantation, the house was fully engulfed.
"It's a huge piece of property," Bay St. Louis Fire Chief San Fillippo said. "Used to be a beautiful property with big oak trees, that backs up to the river.
"You could have a fire burning there for a good while before anybody would notice. I'm sure that's what happened last night.
"You could see the fire over the treetops when you were driving down the road from a good distance. I'm sure it had been burning for who knows how long before anybody noticed. It's a fairly isolated area."
Deputy Chief Monty Strong said teams immediately went into a defensive attack and, battling the blaze for nearly three hours, were able to preserve the main home.
