gonna be talking about two eps from a cool little band named fromjoy. they're an extremely interesting group that blends vaporwave, breakcore, metalcore and dreamy production. with the vaporwave and breakcore influence shining through the most on their ep "away".
its a nice little 3 song ep that highlights fromjoy's experimentation, their focus on creating a truly relaxing sound, while still keeping it mixed with heavy, contrasting sections with lyrics about trauma, abuse, and self-loathing.
production is dreamy, nearly like a pillow to rest on while still upholding heavy sections that fromjoy has come to interweave beautifully into their digital sounds. even with blast beats, soaring vocals and thrumming guitars going on, the production still manages to make things feel as comforting as a weighted blanket, and just as cathartic as finally telling that bitchy customer to go die.
i honestly feel that fromjoy really put themselves into a very unique and lovely place on this ep, and i recommend that everyone at least try it.
taking a look at the second ep i want to talk about - "it lingers."
it showcases their influences of vaporwave and breakcore still, although with this being an earlier release, those influences are not as prominent. it's still unique in its own right though, with memorable, haunting production, good use of samples, and a very nice flow of tracks. this ep is more focused on their metalcore side of things, although that's a bit misleading to say as the ep is seemingly more focused on nu-metal.
specifically with tracks "no skin", and "no mouth" showcasing that in the most obvious ways, with "no skin" having vocal patterns that flow masterfully into drum patterns sworn to make you move.
gritty production is across the whole ep as well, sometimes creating an isolating feeling with where certain samples are placed or where simple static is - though, even with the production being gritty, and dirty, it still gives everything a proper place to shine. the drums, guitar, bass and vocals all have their own place to shine with vocals being pulled back into its own place, while drums are allowed to be abrasive and tonally oppressive. the bass and guitars are allowed to create dirty tones without overpowering any of the other instruments, it all comes together really nicely to create a gritty, powerful package of sound.
