headcanon; aetherium & laputa
though sheeta comes from a bloodline of a superior civilization from a kingdom in the sky, she had been humbled on earth, among her family in their cozy cottage in the mountains. her idea of the power of aetherium had been greatly limited - aside from the knowledge that the amulet around her neck would serve as a protection from harm.
the memories of her grandmother’s teachings were buried somewhere deep in her mind, because she told herself that she’d never need it, that the world was wonderful and kind. of course, this skewered perception comes from the peaceful environment she’d been raised in since birth, and that alone. but after muska kidnaps her from home and works to reach laputa by any means necessary, it triggers her to remember things about the aetherium crystal that only furthers her fear of its powers. regardless of her bloodline, sheeta has always identified and lived as a human being.
laputa is a rich part of sheeta’s history, but isn’t home. and while her heart hurts for an abandonment of her ancestors land (as well as the vanished population), it makes perfect sense to her that the laputian people chose to leave. it confirms that all the power in the world couldn’t remove the innate drive to live and thrive among the rest of humanity, that even advanced civilizations would choose love above all else. so, her home is gondoa*, where her people migrated long ago and settled, where the hymn of spring echoes between the mountains and live true to the practices of ‘peace on earth’.
“Now I understand why the people of Laputa vanished. This is a song from my home in the valley of Gondoa that explains everything. It says, ‘Take root in the ground, live in harmony with the wind, plant your seeds in the winter, and rejoice with the birds in the coming of spring.’ No matter how many weapons you have, no matter how great your technology might be, the world cannot live without love.”
she’s very thankful for the aetherium that’s protected her all these years, but she doesn’t need it anymore*** (and, it’s long gone, since the spell of destruction). she is also extremely proud of the choice her people have made to preserve their morals (unlike muska, they learned that sometimes, leaving is the better choice), as she is proud of herself for standing up for the belief of those morals despite her ignorance in the culture’s history - at least, that is one thing she has done in their honor. now their sacrifice will have never gone in vain.
existing among the world naturally, learning and making mistakes along the way, honing patience and perseverance and wonder of the unknown is the kind of life sheeta is comfortable with, she wouldn’t change that privilege for anything. how could she ever want more when the universe creates so many phenomenal miracles each day?
all the power she needs is within herself.
(* it’s very likely that slag ravine also inhabits laputian ancestors, as uncle gom seems very knowledgable about aetheriums origins. he is probably also one of the last bloodlines, and remains underground to live the last of his days in tune with the earth.)
(***there are some ‘powers’ that are passed down in the bloodline that do not require the aetherium crystal for it to work:
sheeta has a heightened sense of intuition, and is also an empath. she can sense other wordly things from another plane, more closely in-tune with spirits.
she is also more skilled at communicating and connecting with animals than a normal human being.
she can anticipate the weather and other similiar changes in the environment, which comes in handy while working and living in the mountains.
any other ‘powers’ are small-scale things such as protection and blessing through white-magic rituals/’superstitious’ precautions passed down from her family that are more habitual than anything else. e.g. omens based on dates, animal sightings, a full moon, dream interpretation, tea leaves, rune practice, offerings to the dead, etc.)
headcanon; the spell of destruction
at some point in the royal chambers, as muskas deciphering ancient text, sheeta comes to the numbing realization that the spell of destruction was created for a reason. and that reason is because of where she is now, held prisoner by a power-hungry man who will do anything to revive laputa - even if it means destroying the very foundation the civilization was founded on, so long as he can become the most powerful being to rule.
this realization gives her the resolve she needs to use the spell of destruction. she’s entirely confident of her decision (also confident of the use of her crystal for the first time since the movie began), that she even tells muska that the throne room they’re standing in will be a tomb for them both.
prior to ending up in the throne room, she gives her stone to pazu and tells him to leave laputa while he still can, because she knows she’s the only one who can stop muska for good. she doesn’t need her stone to cast the spell - the main source of aetherium is already present in laputa.
her family is gone. she’d been taken from her home, thrown into the midst of war, and left witness the unnecessary deaths of thousands. her race of people are gone. there is nothing left for her to hold onto or to do but save the legacy of her people. sacrificing her life is all that remains. this is easier than anything else she’s faced (even if she’s scared).
however, pazu comes back for her. he tells her to whisper the spell into his ear. he tells her that the others have already escaped because he’s also aware that he will die (and sheeta gives him a look that is almost apologetic and thankful). like her, pazu also has no family. his home is just an empty space. sacrificing his life to save the empire his father preserved to his heart and died for is all he has left to do. in this final moment, they accept that all they have left is each other.
it might even been destiny.
when they hold hands with the aetherium between them, they wholeheartedly pray* that the other, despite the circumstances, will live. this is the intention and power that saves them in the end.
(*the crystal works with incantations, but it also works depending on the will of it’s user. e.g. sheeta pleading for the doors to open so she can escape muska, the spell of destruction itself - it doesn’t work when she whispers it in pazu’s ear, but takes effect the second time when she says it with intent to use it’s power.)

ℕ𝔸𝕋𝕌ℝ𝔸𝕃𝕃𝕐, THE BEAST BACKED AWAY as to provide more space between the YOUNG MAIDEN and himself. He hadn’t meant to surprise her, after all, and perhaps he should have considered the possibility of waking her a bit sooner. OH WELL, pure coincidence, he supposed.
His neck swayed and CURVED slowly, fluid, patient movements emphasizing the beasts calm composure. HIS WINGS, which were in a bat-like position, drooped more closely to the flowery grass. “ VIDAR is my name. “ He answered. “ I’VE COME HERE FOR A LONG REST AFTER A NIGHT’S TRAVEL MYSELF. And then I saw you here. “
The edges of his mouth CURVED slightly upward. “ You needn’t apologize if you feel the NEED to. You’re not the first to react with such a start like that. EVEN MY OWN STUDENTS have given me quite the ASTONISHED look. “
“...Are you hungry?” Sheeta asks, before her nerves have been completely shaken off. Her voice is soft still, the remnants of sleep still caught in her eye as she moves forward to dig her knees into the grass and sit before him. She gives herself a moment to take in the sight of this beast; long languid neck, wings wider than anything she’s ever seen...
She almost wants to reach out and touch him -
At his smile, however, she settles for simply scooting closer instead, eyes blinking up curiously, calmly, as if she were trying to identify the shapes of idle passing clouds. “I'm afraid you might not fit inside my cottage, but I still have leftover stew on the stove from lunchtime.” He must be as big as he is ancient, she thinks. Yet, big as he may be, it feels as though perhaps his kindness is greater.
“My name is Sheeta...” Her smile is slight, still thawing from a rather cruel winter, but sincere nonetheless.
“It’s wonderful to meet you.”

@wrathruined ( cont’d. )
She cannot even believe that she’s come here, standing before a man she would have killed ( had his blood been weak like hers ) and she thinks that this must be irony - or maybe karma - or something else she hasn’t grasped about the way in which the universe works. If anything, it’s the latter. Being exposed to Laputa only asserted just how little her understanding of anything she thought she knew was; the world, since then, has become much bigger, scarier--- - unkind.
“Something’s happened,” Sheeta says, with such certainty that it scares her. “I don’t know what it is... I just know.” Gripping tight at the skirt of her dress, she does a poor attempt at keeping her face dry of tears. She does not want this burden of intuition - not now. But it’s there, as strong as her love for Pazu, and all she wants is for everything to be okay. Why can’t everything be okay?
“I - please... help me. Please.” She may have survived the fall of Goliath, but she is still very much a girl - a child. Searching for the bliss she’d known before she ever got thrown into the crossfires of war. Yet, coming home hadn’t meant gaining what she’d lost in the slightest.
I... can’t sense him anymore -”

Since the day began, it seemed like her home had turned itself into a nest of cats. Earlier while on her way to feed the cattle in the barn, she’d come across a tiny, black kitten causing a commotion with the bison-- - and if that weren’t enough surprise, she’d returned home just to find three more kittens rummaging about through the living room. Of course, at the time, she hadn’t known there were three of them, and wondered how one small kitten could reach so many places at once -
But with a fresh bowl of milk placed by the entrance to the kitchen, and with what she assumes to be the entire litter all gathered in one spot, she decides that now would be a good time to see if their mother or caretaker was somewhere nearby. Where had these kittens come from so suddenly? And why were they drawn here of all places?
( Not that cats were the strangest of visitors she’s ever encountered... )
She doesn’t even get one foot outside when she finds another black cat directly on the other side of her cottage door.
“Oh!” This one looks fully mature, which is a relief to Sheeta; she’d started to wonder if maybe they were abandoned. Crouching down to better speak with the cat, she smiles reassuringly.
“You’re looking for your children, aren’t you? I think I’ve found them; four black kittens.”

Brushing his thumb over the rounded edge of a broken medallion, Link pondered over if she would appreciate it—or know what it was. Kinstones were special. They were created by the Minish to bring people together, like the stones themselves, and bless them with happiness.
… She looked like she needed it.
But did she have the other piece? Well, even if somebody held only half of one, it still gave them hope. Hope that someday someone will come along and complete it. That was a good enough gift for a random stranger, he thought. With his mind made up, Link marched on ahead and held out the blue shard with a smile.
“Are you giving this... to me? Why?” It’s extremely hard to hide her reluctance and its perhaps against Sheeta’s character to be so quick to question a seemingly kind gesture, but with as common as it was for her to have supernatural encounters - the downside to that was how it made possible ‘coincidences’ ( such as being offered blue, mysterious stones... ) to come off as particularly alarming. All she can think about as she stares at the object in his hand is how conflicted she is about grasping the traumatic remains of a lost identity, stuck with trying to reinvent herself to be the person she was before her abduction, and before the power of Laputa had awakened within her and stirred something deep inside that she can never silence.
It’s obvious she doesn’t want to be rude, though, even as her hand shirks away and her eyes linger with a shadow of apprehension.
“I’m terribly sorry - I don’t mean to be this way...” she mumbles, a little embarrassed, now hyper-aware of her pounding heart. What does she say? To this boy?
To herself?
“I’ve just remembered something, is all.”
