Some dead leaves with a fresh paint of chrome leaves in working on the idea is too challenge the pre conceptions in our ways of seeing!
my tree after being painted.....after being in the rain. Plants and trees are something we see everyday i wanted to see one coloured in the polar opposite or the organic natural green to black, a colour which would more represent decay, death, ash or charcoal
after much hesitation I've decided to go with ways of seeing, with my main focus on how we see colour. sight is arguably the most used of the five sensory systems and the way we see colour gives us the ability to distinguish our environment and ultimately creates our perceptions of the world and others.
in my experiments i hope to challenge the concrete perspectives people have about colour by offering alternatives to the concrete way we see certain commodities (such as the red tea above).
i also hope to uncover what colours REALLY make us feel and which we favour through social experiment
a couple of failed op art attempts from last week after much consideration i have decided to abandon this idea from the ways of seeing week, am still very interested in doing my own op art, though the herman grid illusion is too hard to re create in a different context as it has been proven that even a change in colour or change in shape the illusion will not work (as you can see above)
Ways of Seeing
Optical Illusions: Can you see the black dots? Can you count them?
In the above illustration, black dots appear to form and vanish at the intersections of the gray horizontal and vertical lines. When focusing attention on a single white dot, some gray dots nearby and some black dots a little further away also seem to appear. More black dots seem to appear as the eye is scanned across the image (as opposed to focusing on a single point). Strangely, the effect seems to be reduced, but not eliminated, when the head is cocked at a angle. The effect seems to exist only at intermediate distances; if the eye is moved very close to or very far away from the figure, the phantom black dots do not appear.
The illusion is known as the scintillating grid, and was discovered by E. Lingelbach in 1994. It is a modification of theHermann grid illusion.
The effect of both optical illusions is often explained by a neural process called lateral inhibition.[3] The intensity at a point in the visual system is not simply the result of a single receptor, but the result of a group of receptors which respond to the presentation of stimuli in what is called a receptive field.
A retinal ganglion cell pools the inputs of several photoreceptors over an area of retina, the area in physical space to which the photoreceptors respond is the ganglion cell’s “receptive field”. In the center of the receptive field the individual photoreceptors excite the ganglion cell when they detect increased luminance. The photoreceptors in the surrounding areainhibit the ganglion cell. Thus, since a point at an intersection is surrounded by more intensity than a point at the middle of a line, the intersection appears darker due to the increased inhibition.
There is strong evidence that the retinal ganglion cell theory is untenable. For example, making the lines of the grid wavy rather than straight eliminates both the Hermann grid and scintillating grid illusions.[4][5] The Baumgartner / RGC theory does not predict this outcome. Lateral inhibition theory also can not account for the fact that the Hermann grid illusion is perceived over a range of bar widths.[6] Lateral inhibition theory would predict that decreasing the size of the grid (and therefore decreasing the amount of inhibition at the intersection) would eradicate the illusory effect. One alternative explanation is that the illusion is due to S1 type simple cells in the visual cortex.[7]

i really like this photo of my groups work in progress for week 3, im not sure why possibly the odd contrast of the glamarous bmw and the grubby and dusty cofa students artwork. in a way i think they both mark sucess but of a very different kind!
