A Sartorial Investigation
I think we can all agree, that when it comes to wardrobes on Miss Fisher’s Murder Mysteries, Phryne’s closet takes the sartorial cake. It’s filled to bursting with silks and crepes and furs and shoes. Oh my God! The shoes.
That leaves the question, what about everyone else’s wardrobes? Each secondary character is pretty much relegated to their own uniform. Dot is in either a dress or cardigan and skirt combination of neutral tones. Cec and Bert practically live in their woollens and hats. We don’t see enough of Mac to really gauge her wardrobe but it looks like she inhabits her trousers, waistcoat, cravat and occasional lab coat. Mr. B’s morning suit is a constant as is Hugh’s constable uniform unless he is on a date with Dot. And don’t get me started on those horrible frocks the wardrobe department insists on sticking Aunt Pru in.
So, who does that leave? Oh right, Jack.
Poor, dear, buttoned up Jack. He’s stuck in a boring old suit and tie. No chance for personal expression in that. Or is there?
Actually, Jack’s suit does afford him a bit of sartorial freedom that isn’t seen on other characters, and that freedom takes the form of his ties. Now like a cigar, sometimes a tie is just a tie, but as with the man himself, there is often something deeper going on, whether it be in his thoughts or with his choice in ties.
Let’s take a look at the selection from Season One, shall we?
1. JACK’S TIE OF ANGST AND ANGUISH
DESCRIPTION: Shades of blue and grey stripes on a matte fabric, possibly wool. EPISODES: Cocaine Blues, Murder on the Ballarat Train, The Green Mill Murder, Death at Victoria Dock, Raisins and Almonds, King Memses’ Curse NUMBER OF APPEARANCES: 6
This is the tie Jack is wearing when he meets the Honourable Miss Phryne Fisher for the first time in Lydia Andrew’s lavatory. Unlike his other ties, there is no sheen to this one. It is flat and almost colourless, sort of like our inspector’s life up until this point. This tie makes an appearance in every episode up until Murder in Montparnasse and we all know what happens then. It does show up one more time in this season, he wears it as he stands by helpless in face of Phryne’s grief as they exhume Janey’s body, probably his lowest point since the Dubois case.
2. JACK’S TIE OF INFLUENCE
DESCRIPTION: Shades of blue and grey stripes on a shiny fabric, possibly silk. The tie has a double parallelogram graphic design in light and dark silver overlaid on the stripes. EPISODE: Cocaine Blues, Death at Victoria Dock, Ruddy Gore, Away with the Fairies, Queen of the Flowers, Death by Miss Adventure, Murder in the Dark NUMBER OF APPEARANCES: 7
This tie and two others are tied for the second most appearances in Season One. This one is Jack’s power tie. It’s the one he wears most often when he’s interrogating suspects, or when he’s trying (and failing) to get Phryne to listen to reason.
3. JACK’S TIE OF TRUST
DESCRIPTION: Maroon background with a cream graphic print. Possibly silk. EPISODES: Murder on the Ballarat Train, Raisins and Almonds, Ruddy Gore, Away with the Fairies, Queen of the Flowers, Death by Miss Adventure, King Memses’ Curse NUMBER OF APPEARANCES: 7
This is one of Jack’s few non-blue ties. You can’t help but notice it because it’s usually making a statement and that statement generally has to do with Miss Fisher. It’s the tie he’s wearing when he first grudgingly allows her to investigate along side of him during Murder on the Ballarat Train. He is also wearing it when Phryne asks him what she should do about Murdoch Foyles’ offer. Jack doesn’t tell her what to do, he listens and shows unwavering trust in her ability to make the right decision, never once trying to push her in one direction or another.
4. JACK’S TIE OF UNRESOLVED SEXUAL TENSION
DESCRIPTION: Blue background with brown and light beige circular pattern. Possibly silk. EPISODES: Murder on the Ballarat Train, Queen of the Flowers, Murder in the Dark NUMBER OF APPEARANCES: 3
This tie only shows up three times throughout Season One, most likely because Jack is only beginning to plumb the depths of the sexual frustration he’s going to experience when it comes to Phryne Fisher. It makes its first appearance after Phryne impressed him, despite himself, with the leads generated as a result of her investigation into Mrs Henderson’s murder. Its final appearance of the season takes place during Murder in the Dark. Jack is now free, having been granted a divorce, but he’s nowhere near ready for a gaudy night with Phryne, and, despite almost overwhelming temptation, he chooses to remain a triple pillar of the world.
5. JACK’S TIE OF FAITH & SUPPORT
DESCRIPTION: Beige background with individual navy blue or black, white, and maroon ellipses. Possibly wool. EPISODES: Murder on the Ballarat Train, The Green Mill Murder, Death at Victoria Dock,Raisins and Almonds, Ruddy Gore, Murder in Montparnasse, Death by Miss Adventure, Blood and Circuses, King Memses’ Curse (X2) NUMBER OF APPEARANCES: 10
This is the tie that makes the most appearances in Season One. It is the only other tie that isn’t a hue of blue or grey in the series. It probably is the most deceptively simple tie in Jack’s wardrobe. Glance at it and the tie appears deceptively simple: beige background with black polka dots. But like Jack, there’s a lot more to be seen. In fact, if you look closely, you will see it has a beige background with black or navy blue, white and maroon ellipses. This tie only turns up as Jack becomes more confident in Miss Fisher’s morals and character, most notably wearing it when he delivers the news that Welfare will allow her to foster Jane and shares his first confidence, telling Phryne that no, he has no children of his own. It also makes two appearances during King Memses’ Curse, arguably when Phryne needs his strength the most. He’s wearing it first when he sends her to find Teressa Cavalli showing his faith in her ability to keep a level head and again, at her birthday party. Jack is the only one who knows how much pain she’s in during the gathering and he helps her keep the mask in place for her guests.
6. JACK’S TIE OF WHIMSY
DESCRIPTION: Midnight blue background patterned with alternating white and bright blue squares, each centred with a crimson circle. Possibly silk. EPISODES: The Green Mill Murder, Death at Victoria Dock, Raisins and Almonds, Murder in Montparnasse, Away with the Fairies, Queen of the Flowers, Blood and Circuses NUMBER OF APPEARANCES: 7
Not much to say about this tie except that it tends to show up when Jack is feeling comfortable and sure of himself, for example, he’s wearing it during the Beep! Beep! scene from Murder in Montparnasse.
7. JACK’S BOWTIE OF SIGHS
DESCRIPTION: Black bow tie. Most likely silk. EPISODES: Ruddy Gore NUMBER OF APPEARANCES: Sadly only one, hence the name.
8. JACK’S TIE OF ROMANCE
DESCRIPTION: Blue background with white or silver fern leaf pattern. Possibly silk. EPISODES: Murder in Montparnasse, Away with the Fairies, Queen of the Flowers, Death by Miss Adventure, Murder in the Dark NUMBER OF APPEARANCES: 5
This is the tie Jack is wearing when he finally gives into temptation and plants a beautiful kiss on the desirable Miss Fisher’s lips. It’s a distraction of course. It’s also the tie he’s wearing when he calls her Phryne in front of Hugh and Dot for the first time, and when they first walk arm in arm at the end of Queen of the Flowers. Jack is also wearing this tie when, after the departure of his main competitor for Phryne’s affections, Lin Chung, tells her that he can cope with one candle at the end of Away with the Fairies, making us hopeful for future romance.
So, there you have it, an in-depth look into Jack Robinson’s ties. We’ll have to see if these theories hold into next season.
Until next time…
Reblog cuz #4 ❤️😂❤️
Unequivocal genius re: science and research. I like so many of them. Can’t decide. Guess I’ll have to say it’s a tie.

A question for people with cats...
Hi, friends. So sometimes, Neville-cat is very confusing. One minute he’s all Bitey McBiterson Who Bites, and the next he’s all, “I MUST sit as close to you as possible.” :/
(To be fair, this only came about because a strategy I’m trying right now is not reacting at all, be it pulling away, or more negatively or positively, in the hopes that he’ll get bored when it’s not reinforced at all, but I don’t know that it’s tenable in the long term, either, because even though he doesn’t draw blood it does hurt.
However, apart from the times he really is overstimulated or when it’s a part of play, I really think he might see it as part of bonding, as it’s often preceded by nuzzles or interspersed with licking me, and I don’t think he would be cuddling up to me afterwards if he was truly angry. Regardless, I would really prefer this not be his go-to bonding behavior, or even when he’s bored or hungry, if we can modify it. I’ve tried redirecting his energy to toys, and really paying attention to his body language, but it doesn’t always work.)
So, fellow cat people: any wisdom?
We had a cat that we referred to as LLB, lick lick biter. He did the same things you describe. Sometimes snapping him on the nose worked, sometimes putting him down on the floor worked, but he was 16 when he moved on to the great cat pan in the sky and he did it his whole life. Good luck.
Seeing Nathan’s latest IG post in the theatre made me want to share a couple of special moments I had there
These were my seats for the last four performances of the show. Pretty good, eh? Those front row seats were inches away from the stage.
The first night, Thursday, I sat in the one centre block third row back. As the show progressed towards the climax Nathan appeared in the audience, stood behind the seat (front row on your left) and delivered his lines. I forget his words as anticipation was growing already for the following night’s performance; that front row seat was my seat!!
Friday’s performance, which I attended with @debfitz11, arrived and a little bird had told us that Nathan would have liked some audience participation in his political address scene. Always happy to oblige we planned beforehand to shout out ‘No’ at the appropriate moment. Deb was sitting in the identical position to me at the other side of the stage; the moment came and we shouted. The minutest of pauses but un-phased, Nathan smiled (a wicked little smile) and ad-libbed within the context of his speech to the audience’s delight, pointing to the audience, saying “You, you and definitely you” - first one aimed in my direction and the last one definitely aimed at Deb.
We did this, ably assisted or should I say encouraged by @hysydney for the following two performances. I think he was prepared for us by then.
Back to the scene where Nathan dashes into the audience by the side door. (I should say that the seats to my right and the ones behind them were covered over so no-one was sitting in them). Spotlight on Nathan (and me) as he stood immediately behind me and delivered his lines to the villain on the stage. It will come as no surprise that I can’t remember what they were. I snook a quick glance behind - on a level with his midriff. Nice. Turning quickly back to the front I suddenly felt and saw his hands clasp my shoulders !!! Oh joy Oh rapture! I am going to be a bit presumptious here and say he knew it was me….by all accounts he hadn’t involved the audience before, but whatever, he did then. I wish I could have seen behind me at the same time as I was looking forward. Perhaps @debfitz11 can enlighten me.
Chatting to the couple next to me afterwards they said they bought their tickets because of the publicity and that they hadn’t enjoyed a show as good as this for a long time. They asked if I was part of the show …….
@izzyandlouie What a great experience. Thank you for sharing. And I bet he knew it was you ;-)
Good work @izzyandlouie! How fun!
So cool @izzyandlouie
What an awesome experience. Hand on the shoulder, oh my.
Some people survive and talk about it. Some people survive and go silent. Some people survive and create. Everyone deals with unimaginable pain in their own way, and everyone is entitled to that, without judgement. So the next time you look at someone’s life covetously, remember…you may not want to endure what they are enduring right now, at this moment, whilst they sit so quietly before you, looking like a calm ocean on a sunny day. Remember how vast the ocean’s boundaries are. Whilst somewhere the water is calm, in another place in the very same ocean, there is a colossal storm.

A trip down memory lane...
It all began with a funeral…my moms sister, who lived in Sweden, died last year. Some of you may remember. Her son, my Cousin, was very sad that it was not possible for my aunt to return to the small town where she spent her childhood during the war.
(Ca. 1947: My mom: top, Aunt Martha: in the black lace dress. My Grandfather was a high-ranking police officer and the fact that he was reinstated at once by the Allied Forces let’s me hope he wasn’t embroiled too much with the Nazis)
The town is called Swinoujscie now and is in Poland, but until 1945 it was German and belonged to Mecklenburg in the north of Germany. Just to clarify: this part of Germany was German, not stolen from other countries during WW2. In 1945 an allied airraid destroyed Swinemünde, as it was called then and my Grandma and the three girls had to flee because the Russian troops were coming. Ultimately they came to Sweden, which is second home to me now.
So my cousin asked my mother to show us around in Swinoujscie/Swinemünde and tell us everything she remembers. And my, it was a lot. After 71 years. Incredible. My cousins from Sweden were there, daughter and son of my deceased Aunt. Also my cousin and her daughter from Berlin, daughter and granddaughter of the youngest sister, born in Swinemünde in 1943. Also, me and my mother.
In front of my mothers old highschool. To the right you can see the trees where the Nazis hanged 4 people who stole things from bombed houses. My mother and her sister found the bodies when they went to look if their school was still standing.
That’s the place of the old house. My mom recognized it at once and was literally jumping up and down her car seat.
The morning started super-emotional when my cousin read out a letter dated May 1945 by my grandfather. He was in the Army and was allowed to go home late April 1945 as he was already 52. But when he came home, the house was destroyed and his family was gone. My grandma put a piece of paper on the door for him, saying that they were trying to get through to a village in Western Germany where the girls were born, so my Grandpa knew they had survived the bombing. In the letter he described his incredible journey from the front to Western Germany in his quest to find his family.
After the old house and school we found the church were my youngest Aunt was christened. Only the tower was left and a cafe was inside. We had coffee and wrote a postcard to my youngest Aunt.
Then we went to the beach. My mother, who is still sharp as a pencil in her head with 83, cannot walk so far, so she was happy to relax while we took photos. She always said: “No beach compares to the sands of Swinemünde!”
After this super-emotianal, but also great day, we went to have typical Polish food in a great restaurant where nobody spoke German. Always the best!
Pirogy! Yummi. Like dumplings, filled with either meat, creamcheese or sourkraut.
Before I drove the Swedish cousins to the ferry to Ystad we went to the “Golm”, where all the 15000-20000 bodies that were found after the airraid are buried - known and unknown. A silent thanksgiving was sent to the Lord because no one bearing our last name was written on the plaque and for all these souls who are buried there.
An unforgettable trip. Thanks a lot for reading!
Wow, @balticprincess, what an amazing story. Thank you so much for sharing. Very moving.
Thanks all for reading! @whopooh @crazycatschickenlady @revskell @sadlyoutofideas @spitfirealiceagra it really was amazing. Lots of tears, too, but we laughed also quite a lot. Best anecdote for me: While Big sister Martha (13) was helping her Mother to save what could be saved from the bombed flat my Mom decided to have a look around town because she was curious to see what was destroyed. It was March and quite cold, so she decided to take her mother’s fur. Decked out in fur she went around the destroyed town to see what was going on. Her mother missed the fur when she wanted to go to the city administration and my mother had to peel potatoes all evening. After they had traveled by bike 12 km to the room where they were sleeping with 3 people and a baby…
Wow @balticprincess. That was quite a thing to read. Very spiritual journey and I’m sure it effected you very profoundly. We in the US are not as familiar with this kind of devastation and it is always worth pausing to remember the personal toll war has on families. And no matter how devastating, people are able to continue on!
I was going to say the same as @michele02132. I think many Americans, especially young ones feel very disconnected from their history. Ww2 was something that happened somewhere else. Sounds like a really great trip. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks @michele02132 and @bill0014 ! I think I’ll try to write a shortfollow-up, as I received lots of great and encouraging comments!
Amazing story. So much real history our ancestors carry with them. Glad you were able to share this journey with your family. Horrors of war we shall never experience
Essie Davis and Nathan Page being ridiculously cute <3
Could they be any more adorable?
What beautiful people 😍
I still can’t believe this happened.
Adorable :)
@heavyheadedgal you’re so right And my head canon for the caught in the clinch snap is a little different from @phrynesboudoir - Mr Page - so I don’t think the kale in this salad is as fresh as the stuff I pick outta my veggie plot… Everybody Else on Table - Enuff with kale Nathan - Essie make him shut the darn up ED - “channels her inner Phryne and goes in for a snog”
It always goes back to the Kale in my head canon.
Veggie plot full of bike parts and Page boys.

1 week to go
And panic hit this afternoon.
I am not ready for this seminar thing. This is not me being nervous. It is not me making drama. It is just the plain truth.
The “test-defense” thing I am doing next Wednesday is supposed to come when the student are in the last stages of their dissertations. This is only true for me if I look at the calendar. I have written less than a third of what I need to write - and what I have are bits and pieces.
So why am I doing this now? I did try to get a date in late June. It was not possible. I was offered August, but that was not possible for me. (Living in Rio and working in Oslo. Smart). I was afraid moving it to September was too late to have any hope of finishing before Christmas. Therefore it will be now. Ready or not.
I will not die. (Even if I said so in my initial post) I will not fail. This is not a thing I can fail. But it will be two not particularly fun hours. I have known this for some time. I have chosen to ignore it. I will do my best to ignore it in the days to come too.
So, sharing random photos from my walk home from work instead of thinking about stuff:
Yes, I have found yarn. And new knitting needles.
And I have tested lipstick #2
You can and you will! You have a worldwide fan base behind you.
Is there anything practical we can do to help @whilenotwritingmyphd I know it’s probably unlikely but you never know😀
@whilenotwritingmyphd I second @ladygrayluvs Is there anything we can help you with?
We believe in you @whilenotwritingmyphd. *Phrack pack fistbump*

“I’ve left him.”
Dang Amanda.. good girl. You came to your freaking senses!
Good for you Amanda! This beard they made him wear was really too horrible for words. Now the interesting question is: a vicar, living (?) with a pregnant (by another man) not-yet-divorced woman? I am so looking forward to series 3. @mrsjohnsfarmhouse let’s go to Cambridge when they are filming?
@mrsjohnsfarmhouse and @balticprincess I may sneak over the pond and join you, especially if they are filming at The Orchard again…
Yes, @slimwhistler spiffing idea (I read too much Daisy Dalrymple…) see you!
And there he was just last night up against the garden wall with Margaret! Hey, you guys are ahead of us! God, does Amanda have to be such a handful. Grrr.
Ooops, sorry @michele02132 I am a bad girl, watching it at once…I can never wait. And in Germany it is dubbed and they speak German. Impossible. I’ll buy the DVD’s anyway…
Love this show. Agony that I can't binge watch it. Darn PBS.

(via thegeekyblonde)
I used this photo on The Idea Room photo for the day. One person commented on it as I thought I might. At first glance the small shrub has the BIG shadow. Actually it is a large tree that is just out of the photo. How often do we think our image is bigger than it really is? How often do we think we cast a big shadow?
There is the question “Would you rather be a little fish in a big pond or a big fish in a little pond?” When you look closely at the photo, you can see the shadow of the little shrub that is the appropriate size. Many times we think about the “big” things that we do. These are the major moments in our life that we think about. On Dancing with the Stars tonight they are noting the BIG year in their life – a turning point.
What I have found that for me it is the ordinary that really becomes important in the long run. As I look through photos and plan to do albums for our adult children and us – it is the everyday things that come to mind. It is the little things that we repeat and tell stories on when we get together. It is the everyday events that becomes precious when it no longer repeatable – when people have grown and places aren’t there any more to go to.
I remember seeing this image and when I ran and got my camera, the sun had gone under and cloud. I had to wait several days before I could get it back as I first saw it. There are times you don’t get the chance to “get it back” or “retake the image”but sometimes we do. I try to live each moment in the moment and enjoy this day. I do plan. I do practice and get ready. I do make my “to do lists”. Sometimes you just need to let it go when things break into the day. I hope you enjoy this day and tomorrow and every day in your future.
Beautiful message!
(Lovely photograph too!)
Beautiful picture and message.
Unless…I don’t know. You could come with me?
