Let's try to solve the problem.

"A well-known watchmaker was robbed. According to him, at 10:00 PM, the lights in his office were turned off at the switchboard in the hallway. He left his office, was hit on the head, and lay unconscious for two hours. Upon awakening, he immediately turned on the light and called the police. However, it was immediately clear to the detective that the whole story was a lie. How did he figure this out?"

Let's take a closer look at the watchmaker's office. You'll notice that all the clocks show the same time. But you'll also notice that a wire runs from the white clock along the wall. Therefore, this clock is powered by electricity.

If the lights went out at 10:00 PM, then the white clock should have stopped at that time. After the lights were turned back on, this clock should be two hours slower than the others. It was this discrepancy that helped the detective.

A few exercises to improve your deduction skills:

• Observation without judgment.

Go outside and pick out a person. What do you see?

Incorrect: He's well-dressed.

Correct: He's wearing a black coat, blue jeans, new sneakers, and holding a cup with a coffee shop logo.

Note the details. The important things are in the details.

• Look for inconsistencies.

In conversation, in the news, in advertising. People can say or write one thing, but do something completely different.

If you notice a contradiction, note it. The brain quickly learns to notice gaps or breaks in logic.

• Ask "Why?"

If you see a traffic jam, ask "Why did it happen?"

If a friend doesn't look well, ask "Why? What could have happened?"

Build cause-and-effect relationships.

However, don't immediately assume your guesses are the absolute truth; always test your assumptions. Don't give up if your guesses are initially wrong — you're just learning to notice what others don't always see.

Deduction is a logical method of reasoning in which conclusions are drawn from general premises to specific cases. It is a way of thinking in which a new conclusion is logically derived from a set of valid premises.

An example of deductive reasoning:

•Major premise: Citizens of a certain country receive a passport at age 14.

•Minor premise: My fellow traveler in the train compartment has a passport of that country on his lap.

•Conclusion: This fellow traveler is definitely 14 years old.

Deductive reasoning skills can be developed in the same way as a sense of rhythm, an ear for music, or the ability to draw. This can be facilitated by puzzles, logic problems, and lateral thinking, as well as by observing people and practicing generating your own hypotheses.
