Thinking about Zim going through an arc like Catra's in She-Ra 2018 following Top of the Line.
Like Tak turning traitor and doesn't affect Zim much, because he's like, "Whatever, she's just a jealous failure and I'm definitely a real Invader. The Tallests' most favorite and beloved, in fact". And then Tak convinces Skoodge to turn traitor because he did everything right and those dicks still didn't appreciate him. And Zim's still like, "Whatever. They're both losers who couldn't hack it so they're throwing their lot in with a resistance movement made up of a bunch of inferior lifeforms from planets who already failed to overcome the might of the Irken Empire. But I'm not like them. I'm different. I'm special". And then more and more Irkens defect after being made to realize that no amount of hard work or success will ever make them matter in the eyes of the Tallest or the Control Brains and their lives will never improve no matter how much wealth and resources the Empire gains from conquering planets because the universe is their luxury resort and everyone else is just the staff. No matter how many of them try to convince Zim that's he's wasting his life vying for the approval of the Tallest, he refuses to listen and doubles down on his devoted commitment.
But then Tak tells Dib the truth about Zim and convinces him that the earth isn't really in danger because Zim's too stupid to conquer it and his efforts would be better spent on helping the Resisty. So Dib abandons Zim. Abandons their rivalry. He's finally among a group of people where the reality of aliens and the threat of the Irken Empire isn't a question, his sanity is never questioned, and his efforts are no longer overlooked. He's finally getting everything he always wanted while Zim is still languishing on earth on a fool's errand.
Zim finally gets to the point where he can no longer deny that his mission was fake and the Tallest don't care about the earth, so even if his mission succeeded it wouldn't change their opinion of him. But that just makes him crash out and decide he'll have to do something they will care about to prove his worth. So Zim makes it his new mission to destroy the Resisty. Tak and Skoodge and Dib all try convince him that it won't make a difference, the Tallest will never care about anyone but themselves, but he refuses to listen. It's not until he actually does pull off a miraculous victory that all but crushes the Resisty and has to face the disappointment everyone warned him about that he finally turns on the Irken Empire.
So Zim sets Dib and Tak and the rest of the imprisoned Resisty members free and tries to sacrifice himself. But Dib insists on saving him and taking him to regroup with what's left of the Resisty. Zim insists he's not actually joining them. He feels like an idiot for doubling-down for so long when everyone else was getting woke and hitting the bricks and thinks his efforts to undo the harm he caused were too little too late. He can never be one of them. Dib tries to convince him that he's proved he's just as capable of change as anyone else. If the Resisty can accept Skoodge, who actually succeeded in conquering the Slaughtering Rat People, they can accept him too. But Zim doesn't believe him. He's done too much wrong and the Resisty will never be able to recover from the damage he inflicted. Why would they want him around? Besides, the fight against Irken tyranny is already over. He's taking off and advises that they should all do the same. Scatter to the furthest reaches of space to carve out new lives for themselves on backwater planets too insignificant for the Tallest to care about.
Speaking of planets that the Tallest don't care about, it turns out the earth actually does hold some strategic value to them, so they're pivoting to go and conquer it after all. Zim catches wind of the Tallests' intentions after Dib and the Resisty have already set a course for earth, thinking they can lay low there, and rushes to catch up so he can warn them. But only because he still feels like he owes Dib for saving him, and definitely not because he's in love. So, despite thinking it's hopeless to fight, that he'll never be able to redeem himself to the Resisty, and Dib will never love him back, he finds himself doing everything he can to help the Resisty with their doomed efforts to save the earth and stop the Irken Empire once and for all.
