writing fanfiction is just. i’m being so creative and original. i’m plagiarizing everyone by accident. i’m a genius. i’m cringe. i’m too angsty. i’m too cheesy. this is not in character. it doesn’t matter that it’s not in character because these are my characters now. i love my hobby. this is the worst possible use of my time. i’m seeking validation. i’m projecting my own personal problems onto this story and i’m barely hiding it. i know so many words and i’m using all of them wrong. im on tumblr posting about it instead of writing it.
me, every single time i get a kudos on ao3: someone liked my writing. one real irl human being read something i wrote and enjoyed it. they thought it was good enough to read to the end and click the button. an actual person. they liked it.
anyway back 2 house….another thing that makes that show so painful is that house knows he’s gay & has actively decided to be closeted but doesn’t know he’s in love w wilson, which is hell to watch, and wilson doesn’t know he’s gay but does know he’s in love w house, which is a different type of hell to watch. many flavors of suffering going on here
Anyone who loves House MD knows it can be difficult to find good Hilson fic. There’s a lot of House fic out there, but a lot of it has been buried deep due to the sands of time. I’ve been reading House fic for over ten years and figured I’d throw together a list of my all-time favorites.
For this pairing in particular the dialogue and characterization is so important to me. That (and overall grammar and readability) are the main criteria for my rec list.

All Over But The Crying by simple__man. PG. 4k. Deathbed love confessions. Wilson is dying (not canon, this was written in 2006) and they finally talk about what their relationship means to them. This is absolutely lovely but will probably hurt.
All the Effects of Intoxication by otter. PG-13. 3k. In which House and Wilson hook up while drunk.
Defensive Strategies (X) by milkshake butterfly. PG-13. 14k. House pretends to be Wilson’s boyfriend to get rid of a woman hitting on Wilson and it escalates to Wilson having a sexuality crisis. Feels like an episode.
A Differential Diagnosis for Green Silk by Isagel. NC-17 5k. Wilson and his green tie.
Distancing by astolat. R. 2k. House and Wilson get together but Wilson is still a womanizer. Warning for infidelity on Wilson’s part, but House is okay with it.
The Fine and Subtle Art of Cardiology by rageprufrock. R. 8k. Wilson is being hit on by another male doctor, House launches an inquisition and involves the team.
He Won't Tell You That He Loves You by hellshandbasket. NC-17. 25k. Set in Season 6, based around House going to therapy and working with Vogler to realize what Wilson means to him. This was written in 2020, which makes it read a bit different than the older fics, but may be a great place to start if you’re new to the fandom.
One is Silver (X) by recrudescence. NC-17. 5k. Wilson polishes silver to get his mind off his failing marriage, House comes over and then porn ensues. Lots of good feelings and good sex.
Only Fools Rush In by bittereternity. PG-13. 4k. Fluff for days. Wilson realizes he’s in love with House.
A Smaller World by fourteencandles. PG-13. 10k. A great look at what a functional relationship and compromise would look like between the two of them.
Honorable Mentions
Comfort Zone by nakeno and recrudescence. R. 6k. A fic where they sort of just gently fall together without angst and longing, it just sort of happens. The sex feels like first time sex between long time friends.
