Also, if we'd been let in on the knowledge that the Grey Wardens had only even been allowed back in Ferelden 20 years ago after hundreds of years of banishment after trying to stage a coup, and even then only after taking King Maric with them on a dangerous mission leaving Loghain to scramble to run the country and raise his son in his absence with no guarantee he'd ever come back...it might have recontextualized a lot of things Loghain did and said.

Especially considering that Duncan was actually from Orlais (which the game never nentions if I remember correctly) and it was only 34 years before that that Orlesian occupation had absolutely ravaged the country, leaving Loghain with some severe PTSD.
