Something that really peeves me in more recent years of fanfiction writing is the incorrect sentence structure where a gerund is used as the main verb in a sentence. For example, the whole sentence being: Going over to the table. This isn’t proper grammar and it bothers me so much because it’s become so widely used that people have started taking it as grammatically correct. I realize that not everyone even realizes what they’re doing, but I wish there was a way to tell every fic writer this

For those of you who don’t know, a gerund is a noun that looks like a verb. If you can replace a verb-ing with “the activity” then you’ve got yourself a gerund.

In this case, the example is a gerund phrase. You can replace the whole thing with “The activity.” That’s not a complete sentence. In English, a full sentence needs both a subject (some form of noun/pronoun/gerund) and a verb in order to be considered grammatically correct.

I used to be a grammatical prescriptivist when I was younger, but as I get older I realize that it’s a losing battle. Language changes too fast for us to get truly angry at how it does this. Not to mention, a lot of “grammarians” are favouring one version of the language over others, and that version is often related to power, social class, race, or some combination of all three.

I’m not saying that’s the case here. This example is an incomplete sentence that, to me at least, feels incomplete in a way that some others don’t. I frequently start my sentences with subordinating conjunctions (and, but), for example, but I don’t mind breaking that rule because I find that it makes my writing easier to read. Plus, it sounds more conversational.

When I first joined tumblr, I hated how the word “ask” was used as a noun instead of a verb. It genuinely irritated me. I got past it. If this sort of thing bugs you, then you’ll either have to stop reading the writers who do it or find some way to get past it. You can’t teach a grammar class to every fanfic writer who makes a mistake, and you’ll go crazy wishing that you could.

Let people have fun and write how they like. Not everyone is trying to get published and not everyone is trying to improve. If you see something you don’t like, back out of the fic. There’s plenty more out there. You’ll be able to find something you like.

As a linguist with two degrees in the field and now an editor, I don’t agree with anon at all. In academic writing, sure. But in creative writing? Incomplete sentences and bad grammar have their place and can be totally fine if you’re trying to achieve a certain effect.

Have fun with language when writing stories; that’s part of what makes it creative.

I have to say I also don’t agree with the anon either. I’m a [grammar/language] descriptivist all the way, from the first time I learnt of that term.

“Standard” English is always evolving, as languages change with the times, and as noted, what is denoted as “standard” is dictated by power not by “the best language” (of which there is none).

And secondly, as other people pointed out, anon’s example sounds like it was a stylistic thing, and I’ve seen it before and quite like it, too: it adds this sense of current-ness and quick pace to writing.

Not only that, but have you ever read a grammatical correct fanfiction?? It tastes like dye rice bread in the mouth it’s bad and boring 90% of the time.

Also, consider, some of us genuinely don’t see sentences like that as incorrect at all. You said ‘going to the table’ and that’s where I assume you went. That’s a fully complete sentence to me. I don’t see why it needs to be more descriptive than that. Maybe in an essay where some academic asshole it going to spend 3 days breaking down your research sentence by sentence to prove you’re an idiot, you need to be as exact as possible, but I can’t even read essays at all. All the circle talk confuses me and the idea of having that round talk in my fanfiction makes me wanna cry. Put it in language I understand.

Not every reader or writer is academic and don’t make this an elitist hobby that’s going to alienate not only, your readers who don’t understand grammar the way you do and don’t know why you’re talking like that, but also, the people who don’t speak English very well and all the circle talk is giving them a migraine. Don’t be elitist about the arguably LARGEST hobby world wide that people do for fun and no money.

I feel like, seeing as anon is, er, academically inclined, they should go and read Wittgenstein on language games.

In short, Wittgenstein argues that language only has meaning when you understand the “rules” of the “game” in which it is played.

For example, the word sick. If you’re talking to your grandmother, she probably thinks you’re talking about being unwell. If you’re of a certain age, sick also became a way to describe something that was really great. “That’s sick!” we yelled at a great pair of shoes, or a song we really liked. See also: awesome, crazy, bananas. All words we’ve “repurposed”.

None of those words are incorrect, even if they’re not being used according to their dictionary definitions, because you understand the rules of the game in which those words have been played. All slang is a language game, but so is academic language! If I said the word realist, you’d get very different reactions from my discipline, versus others. None of them are incorrect; you just have to understand the rules of the game in which that language is played.

This extends to grammar, too. Wittgenstein uses the example of builders (which is helpful, as we’ll see). Builders can shout to each other things like pillar, block, beam, or slabs. They can add in numeric values, or quantities: a, b, c, d. Here, there and this might also be added in. Therefore, the phrases “d slab there” or “pillar b here” make entire sense within the primitive language that’s developed. The rules of the game are set. Who cares whether there’s a verb, or whether it’s “grammatically correct”?

So, in the fan fic world, of course going over to the table is a complete sentence. Think about this:

Sirius thought about it, he really did. Going over to the table. Offering a hand. Asking for the number of that tall, mysterious man with the auburn hair and the high cheekbones and the silvery-white spider’s web of scars across the side of his face. He ran the cloth over the dented wooden bar again, glancing up through his eyelashes every now-and-then to watch that fascinating creature in the corner, all long-limbed and elegant. Going over to the table. Why did that seem like the hardest thing in the world?

Going over to the table is important. It’s weighty. I want you to notice it, to chew it over, to let the syllables expand and contract in your mouth. I don’t want to tie it down with anything else because, as much as English is fluid, it can also be restrictive. He considered/pondered/thought about/wondered over - all of those would cheapen that image of going over to the table.

We often write characters with highly developed narratives. They’re not born tabula rasa, they come with a backstory. As a result, we often write very much with feelings, emotions, inhabiting them very cerebrally. If I’m trying to write how Sirius is feeling in the above passage, I’m not going to be writing with perfect grammar because absolutely no one feels in grammar. The rules of the game are set to include that fact.

Anon could also read some poetry. Read something about decolonialising language. Read a translated book. Just… read something that does novel things with grammar and sentence structure, outside of a very prescriptive, very male, and very white framework.

husemonfaradi: My latest work ‘Two Of Us’ by Louis Tomlinson (link in biog) is my first music video in a while and one of the best shoot days I’ve had in a long time back at the beginning of March. The track was very personal to Louis as it’s about his mother who passed away a couple of years ago at a very young age. He was super lovely to work with and told the whole crew at wrap that it was one of the best shoot days he’d ever had. Sadly, just a few days after filming, tragedy struck again as his 18 year old sister passed away and everything was put on hold until now. Respect and love goes out to Louis and his family. This one is for all the mothers and sisters out there.

With Stevie you’re not celebrating music from long ago from the mists of time, she was standing on stage headlining a place this size, doing her best work, just three nights ago. Stevie is forever current, she is forever Stevie. But what exactly does that mean?

In my family, we listened at home, we listened in the car, we listened wherever we could. Dreams was the first song I knew all the words to. Before I really knew what the words meant. I thought it was a song about the weather, but I knew it was a beautiful song about the weather. I always knew the words and I loved them all. Thunder only happens when it’s raining, Players only love you when they’re playing. She’s so wise and serene, she sees all the romance and drama in the world and celebrates it. She will stand on stage introducing a song, telling you how she wrote them honestly, like you’re the only other person in the world. You’re more than a fan, you are her friend, and her words say in so many ways that ‘I understand you and you are not alone’ and THAT is true Stevie.

She walked a path trailed by Janis Joplin and Joni Mitchell, visionary women who had to throw a couple of elbows to create their own space. She was far ahead of her time, creating her own sound. It was bright, it was fresh, it was magical.Next she formed a duo with Lindsay Buckingham, Buckingham Nicks. Then on New Year’s Eve 1974, Mick Fleetwood invited Lindsay Buckingham and herself to join Fleetwood Mac and everybody’s lives became brilliant and a lot more crazier. Stevie Nicks stepped onto the world stage with unforgettable ease, I remember it well. [smiles] She began creating stories that flowed from her heart to her pen which ended up in our souls, characters that we would always remember. Classic songs like Silver Springs, Rhiannon, Gypsy and Sarah. In the 1980s she released Bella Donna, the rare first solo album that was as powerful as the supergroup she was still in. With Stop Draggin’ My Heart Around, she and Tom Petty took it to another level.

Then she did it again, with albums like Wild Heart, Rock A Little, whether on her own or in a duet, with her band, it’s probable she found herself in a barber shop quartet. Stevie can do it all and THAT is true Stevie. You can’t take your eyes off her, as we’ve seen tonight. She’s the magical gypsy godmother that occupies the in-between. It’s a space that can and will only ever be hers. She’s a lot like a rock and roll Nina Simone finding the niche only she can and by being so unapologetically herself, she allows others to do the same and THAT is true Stevie. If you’re lucky enough to know her, she’s always there for you, she knows what you need; advice, wisdom, a blouse, a shawl.

Her songs make you ache and on top of the world, make you want to dance, and usually all three at the same time. She is responsible for all the running mascara, including my own, in all the bad days in history combined and THAT is true Stevie. There are few people who own the stage like her, I was lucky enough to play with her at the Troubadour a few years ago and all I could do was watch. The show is no longer yours, it is hers, and you take a knee and she takes it from you. that’s true Stevie. She has many, many solo hits, If Anyone Falls, Edge of Seventeen, Talk to Me, but there are so many gems hidden within the albums. However you feel or want to feel, there is a Stevie Nicks song that will meet you there. Each song is a dance, an emotional ballad, it is a letter to a lover or a friend and every single year she gathers more momentum. Somewhere around 2005/2006, this woman became God. I think we can all agree on that.

On Halloween, 1 in 7 people dress as Stevie Nicks. She is both an adjective & a verb. To quote my father, ‘That was so Stevie Nicks.’ and to quote my mother, ‘I Stevie Nicks-ed that shit so hard.“ Mick Fleetwood also had a fearless leader, she is Mama Lion to her friends, she is the family member you can always count on. I hope she knows what she means to us, and what she means to other generations of artists who look to her for inspiration and trail-blazing courage. That is true Stevie. She is so much more than a role model, she is a beacon to all of us, whenever you hear her voice, your life just gets a little bit better. When she sings, the world is hers, and it is yours. She is everything you’ve ever wanted in a lady, in a lover and in a friend.
