In ‘Reclaiming Our Space: How Black Feminists Are Changing the World from the Tweets to the Streets,’ Feminista Jones chronicles how a political philosophy and social movement has grown online.

I am reblogging this post because it relates directly to topics we’ve been discussing in class such as black feminism in relation to media/technology. The article provides a review/commentary on Feminista Jones’s Reclaiming Our Space: How Black Feminists Are Changing the World from the Tweets to the Streets. Reclaiming Our Space details the ways that black feminism has evolved by changing with the times. In the work, Jones makes it clear that Twitter did not give birth to black feminism, but that it catapulted decades of work into the mainstream. This is a topic we dealt with directly through our readings, specifically in Decoding Black Feminist Hashtags as Becoming in which the article, “decodes assemblage frameworks through an analysis of black feminist hashtags as processes of renewal and strategy, mediation and embodiment, and as sites of struggle over representation, as becoming.”

...Racial and technocultural ideology play a part in understanding how online discourse ‘‘works.’’ White participation in online activities is rarely understood as constitutive of White identity; instead we are trained to understand their online activities as stuff ‘‘people’’ do. Black Twitter confounded this ingrained understanding, even while using the same functions and apparatus, by making more apparent through external observation and internal interaction how culture shapes online discourses.

Black Twitter’s public element revolves around the hashtag, a user-created metadiscourse convention. The hashtag (‘‘#topic’’) was initially deployed to filter and organize multiple Tweets on a particular topic (Messina, 2007). Initially intended as a curational feature, hashtags quickly evolved into an expressive modifier to contextualize the brusque, brief Tweet. The hashtag’s evolution, I argue, led to the ‘‘discovery’’ of Black Twitter. Black Twitter hashtag domination of the Trending Topics allowed outsiders to view Black discourse that was (and still is) unconcerned with the mainstream gaze.

African-Americans have historically relied on “alternative” communication styles and underground means to connect and build networks. Centuries ago, newly captured African slaves were separated from those who spoke their native languages to discourage organized attempts at escape. For them, finding universal means of communication, like “spirituals” or “work songs,” became essential to their survival and that of future generations. We have often used grass-roots communication to organize and mobilize efforts to achieve freedom and equality.

Students must come to see themselves as the problem, which, counter to the complaints of restorationist critics of the university, is precisely what it means to be a customer, to take on the burden of realisation and always necessarily be inadequate to it. Later, these students will be able to see themselves properly as obstacles to society, or perhaps, with lifelong learning, students will return having successfully diagnosed themselves as the problem.

I reblogged this post because it related to the discussion we had during class concerning the work, “Nah, we straight: An argument Against Code Switching” by Vershawn Ashanti Young. In the essay, he discusses how the art of codeswitching, the practice of alternating between two or more languages or varieties of language in conversation, is primarily about race and how it deeply rooted in segregationist, racist logic that is actually contradictory to improving the well being of students. He instead proposes the concept of code meshing as a way to avoid biases that ultimately lead to accommodating certain forms of racism towards the language habit of black people as well as other minorities. This article defines codeswitching and provides different examples of how it's utilized.
