Do you remember those school visits to some factories with miss Miller, the Tech teacher, when we were senior boys? We used to enjoy them.

It was quite exciting having to take a bus to spend the day out of the school watching some workers run different engines and machines that at that time, looked like high tech.

At the end of the visit, the factory usually gave us some kind of present or a pice of merchandising as reminder of what we had seen. We enjoyed that too.

The most weird and most memorable of those visits was one to a factory where they made canes and paddles. In fact it didn’t look like a factory but like a traditional familiar business but they showed themselves quite friendly with Miss Miller. It turned out to be the suppliers of punishment implements for our school.

When the visit was nearly finished as reminder, the eldest daughter of the owner who was studying to be a teacher, delivered to each one of us, a full-force swat using one of their handcrafted paddles.

It was supposed to be a joke, but I can assure you that I felt my bum quite warm during the way back to school by bus and even late in the evening!
